Massive Ponderosa Pine! 5 Day Turning! - Wood Turning

This was just a lot of work, no way around it. The piece started and ended at 17 1/2" at the widest point which is just about the max size for my 18" lathe. The top was not flat so had to remove 1 1/2" in height to level it. It was and is out of balance so the whole turning was done at under 400 RPM. I'm glad I did it and I like the outcome but won't be doing another this size anytime soon! LOL! Finished in shellac.

Hi Phil Waaaou. Big turn. The bark on the edge, looks like an eagle in flight, with wings spread out. Pretty. Pretty. Pretty. She flew over the tops of the Shady Acre Trees Tops, and decided to metamorphose herself into a bowl. Despite that we can hear the fatigue in your voice at one point, it is a beautiful bowl. Forest fire smoke wise, I have been pretty lucky. Bought two air purifiers: one for the car; one for the house. Our air quality has been much better than it has been for some. Have a beautiful week. Going snorkeling.

Well that was sure worth watching because of its sheer size. You are wonderfully entertaining with your running commentary keeping us totally in the picture at all times. Five days was a heck of a commitment on your part & might I say, you did a fantastic job of editing it down. You have a style & presentation that is uniquely Phil Anderson & please don't ever try to change it. Thanks to your perseverance & skill this is a magnificent bowl & worthy of all the praise being expressed by all who admire your work. Your commitment to retaining as much bark & natural elements in each piece is highlighted in your skill in patching up all the missing pieces of bark & work with the angle grinder to achieve your final result. Great piece of work & great finish too, especially considering it is Pine & not noted as a high quality wood for finishing. Stay well my friend, Don from South Aust.

I have to say since tuning into your channel i have really come to appreciate natural edge turning. Very nice and thank you for sharing. I sent you an email as well. look forward to hearing from you. This piece is big and beautiful. I like the live edge. A lot of work Phil but it is sure worth it. Right at the start you said mask and face shield on and I thought glove but there was your bare hand but though the magic of movies you all the sudden had a glove on 😂. Thanks for the show! Joel
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Haha, yup, forgot to mention the glove! 😊

Actually, I never thought I'd like pine wood turnings. At least until now. That is an incredible beauty! Very well turned!

And it smells good while turning it, Dave! 😊

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Yeah, I don't doubt it! Although no pitch pockets kind of surprised me.

I watched someone else turn something the other day. I am delighted to see many people making beautiful things with lathes and deriving great satisfaction from doing so. You are such a calming presence and so good at your craft, though, that having come across your work early makes most others hard to watch. Part of it is that I like your taste; I don't like putting resin in and on everything, say, and it drives me up a tree to see how much of what's interesting about a piece of wood others take away. But I guess I really like that you seem to work with instead of against your medium, as so many other folks seem to. Thank you for thinking about how much you can keep and not just what you're going to take away.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
And thank you for understanding what I'm trying to do here! 😊
