Massive Rio Tinto Iron Ore Trains tackle the Chichester Range

The Chichester Range in the Pilbara, Western Australia challenges some of the biggest Iron Ore Trains in the world. The Rio Tinto Iron Ore network crosses the ranges around 80 kilometres south of Karratha. These hills challenge trains on both the climb and descent with steep grades on both sides of the hills.

@@Waynegrace323 you don't realize how big they really are until you completely sandblast, refurbish and repaint an engine. it took 2 people 6 weeks, several pallets of sand blast sand, 2 types of primer, 3 types of paint. With the last being a basecoat with anti graffiti clearcoat. All the the paint, primer and a 55 gallon drum of clean up solvent would fill the back of a pickup and make it squat a bit. What a feeling of accomplishment when you rolled it outside when it was finished. Greetings from North Dakota USA.

As a kid who used to collect train numbers on the GWR at Reading General in the fifties, it is still a huge thrill to see/hear the GE diesels (200 per day) pulling WA ore down to the coast, knowing that I had a hand in creating this 'my railway' in the late 1960s. I was a Field Engineer for Central Engineering Services (part then of Rio Tinto Zinc) inspecting the work of MKMM contractors as we worked our way along the 180 mile route from King Bay to Mt Tom Price, surveying, earthmoving and rail-laying (the latter at a 'world record' of one-mile per day.). The official opening of the mainly single track (at that time) was July 1st, 1966. There are photos of this spike -driving occasion digitized in the archives of the State Library of Western Australia. The initial runs were two trainloads per day with three Alco diesels (I believe at least one is still on display at the museum/graveyard outside Dampier). We were the second railroad in the Pilbara shortly after the BHP/Mt Newman road opened to Cape Lambert. For many years, before You Tube/internet, this little corner of the world was unknown, so I am happy that sites like M&S have helped bring recognition to this spectacular mix of man and environment. From Philadelphia, Peter George.

There’s an Alco next to the 7 Mile Worksop at Dampier along with what looks like a EMD F7 and some other equipment. It’s part of a small museum which is virtually abandoned now thanks to employee turnover and FIFO. Talking of the rail construction up there, I took some loads of machinery from Melbourne to Dampier for the sleeper manufacturing plant just off Highway 1 when they were changing from wooden sleepers to concrete. That was around 1981 from memory.
@ThePaulv12
@ThePaulv12 3 года назад
There's an Alco preserved here (there's a pic too): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Newman_railway According to a Google search there's one still at the museum/graveyard outside Dampier you mentioned by all accounts in good working order. "Hamersley Iron - ALCO C-636 3017 Built by Alco in the USA in 1970, this loco was the last 'C' class locomotive built by Alco. Originally numbered 2017. Renumbered in 1972. Used for ore trains from Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Rebuilt with full width "Pilbara" cab in 1984. Last revenue job in service was to power Society 20th anniversary train to Tom Price in August 1995. Retired from service February 1996. Donated to museum in full working order April 1996. Last Alco to be overhauled by Hamersley Iron at Seven Mile workshops."

It would have been spectacular to see when that BHP train took off down the Chichesters with no driver last year. I don’t know if you heard about it, but the driver was winding on the handbrakes on the cars after the ECP cable broke and put the train into emergency. Unbeknown to everyone the ECP system released the brakes after 1 hour and off she went. My neighbour is a FIFO driver for BHP and he told me all about it. ATSB report here. A few questions: 1. Do you know who built these ore gondolas? 2. How much do these wagons weigh empty? 3. How much weight can these wagons carry (maximum load)? It is also extremely unusual for me to see such long and heavy trains with no Distributed Power Units. If I were them I'd not only have the 3 locomotives in the front, I'd put two in the rear as well. Gives you better acceleration, better speed (especially when going uphill), and better dynamic braking when going downhill.

The cars are around 40 tonnes empty, and where they are running 40 tonne axle leadings that means they are 160 tonnes gross weight. Most are made in China these days as far as I know. Autonomous trains have been running for about a year now. You can tell them by the blue light on the sloping part of the cab roof but that can be hard to see in bright sunlight. The trains on the Deepdale line (ex Robe River) are still driven by humans. Autonomous trains load themselves at most of the mines on the ex Hamersley lines but need to be met at the ports and driven through the dumpers. The crew will then do what needs to be done (shunt, fuel, etc.) and set up Autohaul, get off, call the controller to say it's ready to go, and watch it disappear into the sunset.
