Massive thunderstorm in the Amazon rainforest

A thunderstorm of epic proportions on the horizon in the Amazon rainforest - with almost continuous lightning, thunder, wind and a little rain.
I recently traveled to the Amazon rainforest on the tri-border area of Brazil, Colombia and Peru. I was there in the so-called dry season, but that really doesn't mean much. In tropical and equatorial rainforests, the dry season is actually quite rainy, and the rainy season is even more wet. This was the case on my expedition too, with several of these awe-inspiring thunderstorms happening in the space of a few weeks.
Having spent extensive time in tropical and equatorial rainforests, I'm used to loud thunder, powerful lightning, heavy winds and rain, and generally massive thunderstorms. What was new for me in this part of the Amazon is that I could see these thunderstorms on the horizon, sometimes for hours before they hit.
On this one evening, there was not one but two thunderstorms happening in the distance, with amazing lightning but with almost zero thunder sound reaching me. That in itself was a curiously disconnected experience. I was surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest and could barely hear the low rumble of distant rolling thunder. I felt suspended in a weird limbo where the thunderstorms were real but I could only perceive them with one of my senses. Soon enough this magic was broken as the sound started to reach me.
I had ample time to sit on the porch of my hut and observe the epic clouds in the distance. I took my time shooting photos and videos, and even a timelapse of a massive Cumulonimbus incus cloud taking over the local sky. I also had 5 sound recording rigs placed in various parts of the rainforest, although only one of them managed to capture the extreme dynamic range well.
Thunder, rain and wind aren't the only elements in this soundscape. The jungle is teeming with wildlife, and at this time of day - after the dusk chorus - the insects take over. Occasionally some frogs join in as well. It's a beautifully rounded ambience full of heavy contrast and perfectly immersive, with elements from close by and far away mixing together beautifully.
Recorded with Zoom F6 and DPA 6060 in the Javari river valley, Amazon rainforest. Video shot with Sony A1 and Sony 50 f1.2 GM. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

That's exactly what I did, sat on the porch watching the raging thunderstorm and being eaten alive by mosquitoes :D

Absolutely fantabulastic! By other side, Javari River brings sad memories of a terrible crime... what is happening in Brazil is unspeakable.

I agree, the Javari river will for ever be remembered as the site of the tragedy a few months ago. Fingers crossed for the elections indeed.

Sounds fantastic. The sense of space capturing by those tiny 6060 is amazing. How do they deal with humidity?
@GeorgeVlad
@GeorgeVlad Год назад
Thanks! They're actually waterproof so no problem with humidity at all.

Just spent the last hour on a work focus block with this playing over headphones. Turned out to be a very productive hour, absolutely loved this soundscape George. Really like those occasional near-field vocalisations we hear that add another dimension to the depth. Great work as always 👏👏👏

Just amazing how those DPA mics pick up such full dynamic range with the low bass in the thunder, wow, fantastic George-- you've outdone yourself here!

Wow this is great! Where about in the Amazon are you? I remember being caught in a thunderstorm on the Tapajós river once and a lightening bolt striking about 10m from the boat. It sounded like a bomb going off!

That's amazing! Love the DPA 6060! A question when you record with your Zoom F6, do you use an "external recorder" (such as Sony A10) to record the stereo output mix "just in case" (the SD goes corrupt, ecc)? I'm looking for a very small recorder with decent line-in preamp but no more Sony A10, Olympus LS14, or such are all sold out and no more in production...
@GeorgeVlad
@GeorgeVlad Год назад
I don't use external recorders with my Zoom or Sound Devices recorders. I agree that having only one SD card is a bit risky but if I'm on a critical shoot I will bring my SD 633. For anything else the F6, F3 and Mixpre recorders work well enough and I've never lost any recordings because of memory issues.
