Just as I finished watching this video, my 3yo daughter stepped on a lego that was on the floor causing her to bleed.... so I immediately: 1. Cleaned the bottom of her hoof with iodine/water solution 2. Slowly removed all of the loose horn 3. Decided not to put a block since it was in a non weight bearing area 4. Sprayed it with iodine I will revisit her in about 1-2 weeks to reassess her foot and see how she's doing. She should have no problem going back to normal

Two days ago RU-vid recommended that I watch a video about a guy trimming some cow's hooves. I thought, "That's weird, a cow mani pedi." so I watched it. And here I am, two days later, still watching this guy deal with cow hooves. Why is this kind of thing interesting? Seriously, I don't understand why I'm oddly fascinated by watching a guy give cows a mani pedi.

keeping calves with their dams isn't an indicator a farm is any better than those that seperate, jsyk! it's done at birth before any bonding, so there's no seperation distress. it's a really good way to keep track of calf heath, make sure they get colostrum and enough feed, and prevent disease spread. once old enough, they do usually rejoin the adult cows in the herd. some farms seperate, and others (like this video) don't. there's pros and cons either way! dairy cows particularly Holsteins tens to reject calves anyway, so it's usually safer on holstein-dominated farms to seperate.

@@SaintNevermore I respectfully disagree. I grew up in a farm myself and we often had to take stillborn calves away from their dams. They were very distressed and some of them we even had to separate from the herd because they tried to steal other calves from their mothers. Cows are very maternal animals, there's always a certain amount of distress when you separate.
@stephanielovatt2787
@stephanielovatt2787 2 года назад
I've worked on dairy farms, and the calves were always separated from their mothers at about four days old. It gives me joy to see these little ones with their mum's for longer. They're probably healthier calves as a result. If the ice cream is that good, I can't say I blame you two for scoffing the lot! Lol!

I grew up next a cow farm, not sure if it was a dairy farm or not, they usally took the calves away if the mother wasn't letting it nurse, sometimes the mommas would get really violent towards their babies. Sad to see, but I did get to feed a baby calf because of it.

You were right about the area being really beautiful. Even though my ancestors came on Mayflower with Columbus, and others trickled in over the years, our family has always passed down facts about our Scottish heritage. In America I live in Missouri and grew up on a cattle ranch. I never Remember my dad trimming cattle hooves but he did cut over grown ones. We had a horse or pony that foundered on dog food and had to trim hooves --was awful. If a cow got lame the vet was called. But not many ever limped or had trouble as I would go with my dad to check cows in pick up or horseback. But that about 55 years ago. I believe what you are doing is so great. You seem to love your work and I find it wonderful that this is available now. Thank you

There are a lot of benefits to the system on this farm, not least for the cow and calf welfare, it has advantages with calf health, growth rate and costs too. Bear in mind this is an organic farm and there is a large saving on calf feeding costs to balance against the loss of milk yield from keeping the calves at foot until they wean.

"If you are wondering, 'Did they really eat all eight tubs of ice cream?' Yes. Yes they did." You guys are hilarious! (Though your wives might wish you had saved some.). Here's hoping the bull with the pretty white heart and but bad feet is finally on the road to soundness. Good that your new crush made it possible to get at the problems in his hooves in a way you couldn't before. One more reason why getting this well-designed hydraulic crush was so important. I really like that the farm advertises itself as an "ethical dairy" right on the ice cream tubs and that the calves are left with their mothers until they are weaned. You live in a beautiful place. But you knew that. Thank you for this video. How you have the time and energy to make them is beyond me, but I'm glad you do.

Actually leaving the calves with their mothers could be considered unethical. The reason the calves are separated is that they can be injured or killed while milling with the full grown cows. You have to be extremely careful if you don't separate them and it is often better to separate them for their safety.

She has had a bit of a struggle with the right schedule and good tools that will last through a large amount of sheep. Sadly her sheep’s toes got very out of control on certain breeds. I delivered news papers on several rural routes in Oregon. I passed by a herd of cows daily. One day a big ol bull shows up. Hes huge. I had been stopping and feeding the cows carrots and apples that I picked up elsewhere on the route. The first day I stopped with the new bull he was not interested, but I guess he got the message the second day. He was watching for me. He and the whole herd were at the fence waiting for me. I stopped almost daily for 3 years to eat my lunch and hang with him and his girls. He was an amazing character. I miss that old guy. I called him Jimbo.

When I was very young 5 or 6 my dad would take me around to my great uncles cattle. There was a huge Red Bull with a white face that I remember wouldn’t let my dad or great uncle around him but I could walk right up to him and pet him. This made me think that all bulls were super sweet and my dad caught me trying to get on the back of a huge Brahman bull at one of the cattle actions. I just really wanted to touch it’s hump cause it looked super squishy. 🤷🏼‍♀️

When I was kid, my dad used to manage a farm where we had beef cattle, at around age 4 I 'vanished' one day they could not find me anywhere, bearing in mind we had grain pits, silage pits and slurry lagoons, they must have been frantic. Then my dad noticed all the cows stood in a circle in the middle of a field, which was unusual as normally they are spread out grazing or lying chewing cud, he went over and I was in the middle of them, getting licked all over, they parted as my dad gently made his way through and picked me up. To be honest I was probably in no danger, unless they got spooked by something, cows are VERY gentle, inquisitive and for the most part safe. We also used to sit on the backs of the bullocks, in the yard never ever fell off or had a problem with them, used to put a bit of corn in their trough dad would lift us up and stand there stroking them whilst we just sat there stroking them. I love cows, and the way this farm manages its cows and calves is actually quite amazing, sacrificing part of their yield for the calves benefit is very unusual but it also gives the calves the best possible start and I bet they have near zero mastitis problems, because of this. And that bull is a sweetheart, though I bet he changes a little bit when he is working, being, kind, calm and respectful of the animals ALWAYS pays off, in kind, calm and respectful animals in return, being nasty or cruel to or with them never pays, is counterproductive and says a lot about the management of a farm. The places that you go, seem to have nailed this perfectly but I suspect you would not be wanting to be associated with those kind of places anyway, regardless of your love of making animals well and comfortable, some places make this not worth the effort.
