Master Chief VS Locke! - Playing Halo 5 for the FIRST time (Part 2) 

A man who has been playing halo for less than a year can still recognize how bullshit the chief vs Locke fight is.

"I don't think that fight should have been so even" Nor as slow. I remember watching that fight, remembering the descriptions of how fast John was without his armor and fresh out of augmentation. Here we had like one or two good punches among slow knees. It didn't look like a fight between two guys whose reflexes and speed are supposed to be near instant.

A Spartan 2 like Chief would have kicked Lockes ass with his eyes closed and one hand. 343 protrayed the fight wrong, and the speed of an actual Spartan 2.

My issue with Halo 5 is with its story development and characters. You're expected to go into Halo 5 having already watched/read all the supplementary extended universe content. The game does nothing to develop Osiris or Blue Team. I also dislike how Chief is characterised in this game. After Halo 4 did an excellent job injecting character into him and showing his human side, Halo 5 reverts him back into a robot and it's so jarring.

Knights in Halo 5 are a lot more similar to Hunters unlike Halo 4, where they were more similar to elites. Now you can’t run them over. The trick is to shoot the 2 glowing things on their shoulder and then headshot their face when they reveal their skull. Also, you can only assassinate them when you see the glowing thing on its back

The fight between Chief and Locke was just terrible. Slow, clunky (I mean they're fucking Spartans), and Locke even being able to land a hit on Chief in the first place. Just terrible. Hopefully Infinite will have better fights if there are any.

Did you know didact was supposed to have cortana's role in this game? Shame they didn't do that.

I love 343’s games. But Bungie’s games are just different man. You can’t really say why they are. But you can feel it when you’re playing the games. I’ve played Halo CE and 2 since I was like 2-3 years old. I played Halo CE on PC when I was 2 and Halo 2 when I was 3. And I still play them to this day. Halo 2 is the best game of all time imo.

I will say this: from the beginning, I knew that the game wasn't going to be how they marketed to be. After the second mission, I pretty much knew that we weren't getting that. I enjoy the story at least with some parts. I still think it's odd bringing in Osiris out of the blue without people having to know who they are from other source material than just the games. I mean, I'm a casual fan. I pretty much know my knowledge of Halo by just the games and every now and then I get some other tid bits of info from other sources. I want to think 343 was trying to accomplish what Halo 2 did. Halo 2 did something similar where gave you another character to play as from time-to-time: The Arbiter. Obviously a good amount of people actually dislike the Arbiter missions in Halo 2 but I loved them, getting a different perspective for the first time and learning about the Covenant and their beliefs. I have been trying to figure out how Halo 2 succeeded with that but Halo 5 failed with Blue Team and Osiris. And I understand that it was because me, and everyone else, knew about the Elites after playing Halo 1 but having to focus on one particular Elite, and seeing their perspective and their beliefs with the Covenant, is the reason it's enjoyable. It is somewhat forced but Halo 2 gives context on who the Arbiter is off the bat. The Elite commander who was tasked to safeguard Halo from Master Chief but failed and is demoted to Arbiter, the right hand of the Prophets. Halo 5, you don't get that enjoyment. You got Osiris and they pretty much just exist unless you dig through some external source material to figure out who the hell is Tanaka and Vale and how Buck became a Spartan, when did Locke came in and how was an ONI agent at one point and became a Spartan the next. It's a lot. Obviously Blue team has been established in the books but I think bringing them in, like you said, was pretty bold. Still, it's something I think needed to be fleshed out a bit more because, again, what would a casual fan think about these new characters being added in if they never read any books starring them? It would be jarring. I have never read any of the Halo books. I get some info from youtube where there's others who has lots of time on their hands to summarize things for me. But I know a good bit of Halo by the games alone and I feel like Halo has done a good job with that. You don't need to know much about the universe of the game to understand it. They pretty much show it to you through visual and gameplay. That's what I feel like every Halo game should be and then Halo 5 came along and now you need every bit of outside context to know what is happening so far up to Halo 5. It's really a shame. Like I said, I enjoy some bits of the story of Halo 5 but there are some things that don't sit right with me in a logical standpoint. I feel like they did a great job with the story of Halo 4 and ending it the way it did. Halo 5, I feel like it was something they needed to get out there and they had a goal to properly continue the story but possibly a lot of things didn't work out how it should and changed the story entirely. HiddenXperia did a video where there was lots of concepts of more Promethean enemies and even having the Didact a part of Halo 5 where he's just battered and clothed. Lots of things wrong with the story itself. I feel like it could've been done better and I pretty much agree with DeebeeGeek, I feel like they shouldn't have brought back Cortana so soon after offing her in Halo 4. They probably could've brought her back in Halo Infinite but maybe give some context in Halo 5 that she's around in some way, giving the illusion that she is dead but is working behind the scenes. I don't know. There's some ways I think the story of Halo 5 could've been handled better.

I want to reiterate that Halo 4 Spartan Ops was indeed part of Halo 4. It’s almost entirely a self contained story and provides only a small amount of context for Halo 5. That being where Halsey was. Spartan Ops gives more world building than context.

In defence of the fight, Chief is a bit older now and Locke still has been a soldier most of his life. It should've been faster, but let's not forget that Chief hasn't rebelled against the UNSC, he doesn't want to kill one of their best Spartans. I believe he was holding back

Cheifs augmentations outmatch lockes skills by so far, I just like to think that cheif wasnt even trying in this fight. The only spartans that could land a solid punch on him is the rest of blue team and Noble 6

Not sure if you know this but remember when cortona split herself into multiple cortona's in halo 4 to take down the shield covering the didact. The real cortona died one of the bitter shards of cortona got in the domain and thats the cortona in hallo 5 you go searching for. Thats why in halo 5 cortona is different than she was in the other games.

Augmented or not, Chief is still in his 40's by this point in the story. He was 14 in 2525 when the Human/Covenant War started, + 27 years later to 2553, so 42 during the events of CE, 2, and 3. plus 4 years of crosleep, then the 1 year gap between 4 and 5. so 43-44 by this point in the story. meanwhile, Locke is a early-mid 30's career soldier turned Spartan, with the latest set of genetic and non-invasive augmentations, wearing cutting-edge Gen2 armor. Locke was also a veteran of the Great War too, a Special Ops. augmented or not. Chief is still past his prime, whereas Locke is just hitting his. I think the fight was fairly well illustrated.

I agree with what you are saying about it not being a good idea to make so much info only available through the extended universe. However, the ironic thing is that for the people that actually kept up with the comics, books, and even audio diaries... H5 was even WORSE. All of the buildup for THREE years was thrown out the window for the story they went with in H5, and it was a slap in the face to both casual and super-fans.

I'm glad that you took the game for what it was, and you're still enjoying it as some level. I'm super happy that you've fallen in love with the series in general, it's one of the best series that I've played.

What Halo 5's story should have been if Cortana was coming back regardless with the team mechanics; 1.) To start, scrap the entire first level with Team Osiris as it doesn't really have anything to do with the main plot. 2.) Mission 1: Start the game playing as Chief in the Blue Team mission, establish Cortana is alive and Chief going rogue by the end of the level like normal, this way it's from the very begining of the game as we already had some context from Hunt The Truth, instead of waiting for the 2nd level. 3.) Second mission starts with a cutscene actually establishing Team Osiris getting the mission of Cortana and hunting Chief by being briefed on Cortana's rise, how she's been controlling Guardians, and destroying planets (as all of these factors were kinda brushed over), also switch the entire Meridian Station level with the Sanghelios level to get help from Arbiter and establish like they do normally that Cortana wants that Guardian and that Chief is headed there aready. 4.) After the cutscene, Mission 2: You're still playing as Chief as you're going to Sanghelios instead of Meridian Station. Get help from Arbiter, then discover the Guardian. 5.) Mission 3: Transition to Team Osiris, (This cutscene can be the one where Buck talks to Locke about if word gets out about hunting Chief they will be hated) You are now on Sanghelios on a different part of the map to seem different enough so it's not a retread of the previous level with Chief. You just miss Blue Team, maybe some dialogue happens between the 2 teams. Enlist the help of Arbiter to track where they went. This way it actually feels like the greatest hunt in gaming history. 6.) Mission 4: Instead of going right to the final planet, Cortana has Chief stop at another Guardian to activate it (like Hunt the Truth suggested, the Guardians were Chiefs fault, which Halo 5 seemed to ignore) This planet can be Meridian Station to display A.I are joining Cortana. 7.) Cut out all but one Warden Eternal boss fights, the moments he originally appears will just be warnings until you finally fight him for the last time in the game originally. 8.) Mission 5,6,7,8: Showing cutscenes with Infinity and Captain Lasky to get more lore. (Switching back and forth between Blue Team(5&7) and Team Osiris(6&8), with Osiris being one step behind on the same planets not being able to stop Chief or the Guardians pulse weapon) With the 2 added planets have Chief believing he's doing the right thing by activating the Guardians not knowing what happens to the planets or Cortana's plan until later like normal in the game when he realizes Cortana is corrupted. 9.) During Missions 6&8 as Team Osiris you fight Blue Team both times at the end part of the level as almost missed them moments, not just fighting in a meh cutscene. They are close calls but Blue Team escapes both times and the fight can carry into a good cutscene. (This way you feel like you're actually hunting Blue Team and not randomly going to a different planet they haven't gone to and so that you don't just meet them the once in a cutscene then become buddy buddy the very next time the teams meet. This way you've already encountered them multiple times and fought them twice). 10.) The final 2 missions can carry out as normal while Blue Team and Team Osiris are on the final planet.

Chief also would tower over Locke, being a Spartan 4. Dude is a skyscraper. Here he almost looks shorter.

Hey Dee Bee, I may be late to this, but the reason that the colonists of Meridian don’t like the UNSC is because of how the UNSC never came back to reclaim it and help those living there, but now a private company is there to make the planet liveable as it was glassed during the Human Covenant War. As for the oh so infamous Locke vs Chief fight, although it was a bit even the reason we say it’s even is because of bad choreography. However in lore it could be argued that Locke did have training by ONI and was a bit of a hitman for them, but also Chief is an ageing Spartan

The story is awesome, Cortana refuses to die and I loved that detail. What I didn't like was that Blue Team only got 3 mission's, my only complaint. Love Vale knowledge of Sanghellious. All Spartans are awesome!

the way spartan armor works makes it so that spartan threes (locke, and his fireteam, they might not be threes so dont quote me on that) but the armor they wear enhances them to be up to a certain level, after that they cant get any stronger. while chiefs armor doesent have a limit cap. hes already enhanced with augmentations but the armor just multiplies it even more. so its safe to say that chief wouldve literally killed locke if he wanted too.

The fights in Halo 5 was a massive improvement over past games but could you imagine if they had fights like the ones in Rooster Teeth animated rvb 😅

In canon explanation to the fight being "even" is that GEN II armor (the armor all currently active Spartans use now II's and IV's alike) limits the output power of the user to prevent physical strain since it was originally made for lesser augmented users. Thus a Spartan II whose augmentations far exceed Spartan IVs is effectively nerfed in GEN II armor.

If I can't respect a story I need gameplay to be REALLY worth it. I already wasn't big on Halo 4's story, so Halo 5's didn't have a chance. lol As for the gameplay, I am not a fan of the Promethean enemies. I know they were in Halo 4, but since Destiny I can't get the comparisons out of my head, for design and the bullet sponginess of their encounter design. Also, Halo is to be played as Chief, his story. It's kind of like Mass Effect without Shepard... There's potential there, but Shepard is tough to beat, you know? So I totally agree with your points on them forcing Osiris on you and the extra outside source material requirements. It hurts the experience in my opinion.

The issue fans have about the gameplay mechanics is how it fits into multiplayer. In campaign it's perfectly fine and I agree its a nice change of pace. Halo's multiplayer was a hit because of its bare-bones style of movement and gunplay with emphasis on teamwork. Introducing all the abilities not only completely ruins Halo's signature flow in multiplayer, but it also discourages teamwork because everyone is suddenly a one-man army that can sprint, dash and clamber away from mistakes. Halo competitive multiplayer was and always has been about facing consequences for mistakes in battle. So you need to work as a team to win and play carefully and tactically. Now everyone just sprints around the map to find anyone to kill like its CoD, then easily escape when they make a mistake. Tactics, map control and teamwork are thrown out the window in a typical match. Meanwhile in social/casual multiplayer modes, all the numerous abilities throws the pick-up-and-play gameplay of traditional Halo out the window. So your average gamer gives up or isn't interested or able to put in the work to master the abilities. This has been a key reason for Halo 5's significantly lower player base and longevity vs previous games.

Dee Bee Geek. It’s not as noticeable on normal difficulty, but when you play the game on Legendary the squad system is completely broken and does not work at all. Your allies just mindless run to revive you and get obliterated every time. Also no split screen really hurt too.

I can't remember playing Halo 5. Whereas Halo 4 was pretty good imo. Your take is valuable to me thanks for sharing. Let's hope Infinite is as awesome as it seems!

Hay the reason it was even was the armor. That's a gen 2 John in Halo 4 was wearing a gen 1. Gen 2 makes all Spartans basically makes every the same strength. If I'm incorrect tell me I'll read and correct if it a good point
