Also, you can pour water from container to container. Useful if you have been using a water bottle (that is holding "safe" water) and then find a canteen. You can then pour it into the canteen and use the water bottle as a makeshift suppressor.

Found a freaking Blaze, Longhorn, CR 275 and Flare gun with multiple flares without going more than 10 miles from beach towns or spawn. Had everything BUT good food and water and died countless times. Never new this was gonna be such a freaking challenge! Was always worried about PVP but starvation and dehydration is way more of a threat if not dealt with early.

It really is a threat! Once you get a solid amount of food and water in you, and you are solidly in the white, it gets easier and more flexible with what you can do!

If you find mysterious fat or even fat from an animal you kill, you can add it to an improvised burning torch that upgrades the burning torch hugely. This will provide a mobile heat buff 🇦🇺

I believe dried meat does eventually go bad, but the timer is pretty long. Never seen dried fruit or veg go bad though.

@G1NZOU 96 hours I believe for dried meat this doesn't include logging out as the rot timer let's call it freezes while your logged out with it on you baked meat is most nutritious however and as stated yeah dried fruit and veg never goes bad let's just hope they don't patch that 😉 😀

So an interesting thing i learned about cooking meat, if you dry meat you can then boil it later to regain the hydration amount it gives, aswell as reset the shelf life

Head inland! Try fishing. But I do understand where you are coming from. Stick with it though, I promise you it does get easier the more hours you get under your belt. Aim for small victories!

I know I am late. Just wanted to add, that yesterday hd bloody hands, and had no well nearby, but had alcohol tincture, you can clean your hands with that, if you are in a tight spot.

I've only been playing on vanilla servers, but once I got past the noob "I don't know what I'm doing" phase, I never have a problem keeping myself full, hydrated, & healthy. There is always fruit around to be had. I never even bother cooking. Between fruit and loot, I'm all set.

I try to always stay at white stats, but i try and keep it topped up with mushrooms, fruit and veg that I find en route, or the small cans like pâté or tuna, or the packets of snacks, while keeping a can or two of tactical bacon or some cooked meat for emergency use, like if i do loose a lot of blood and health and need to eat a lot of energy fast. If I have space I'll grab those small additional snacks, nibble those just after leaving a town while I'm safe in some bushes, then continue, while my canteen I'll drink just before entering the town if I plan to refill at a pump, just to minimise the time I'm sat exposed. You never really want to sit in a town eating or drinking at a pump unless you're a newspawn without water containers or stashes of food.

Such a great video with so much useful info, definitely earned my sub!! So question here, if you have like 4-8 pieces of meat would it be best to cook a little of each a different way as in grill, boil and smoke? Or do you just grill it all? And one more question, you can put *any* items in the cooking pot that has water in it and it won't have any negative effects? I'd imagine you wouldn't want to put and clothing items, rags or matches or lighter In it but anything else can go in without damaging them? I really appreciate the tips as a newbie to Dayz. Thanks! 👍🏻

It depends on your food levels, but you could bake some to eat now, boil will be a balanced hydration / energy so take that to travel with, then smoke just 1 and stash it for long lasting emergency food. In most cases baking is fine though. Give the cooking pot some testing of your own, but yep should be fine putting items in without "rusting them" or anything like that.

I’m on Xbox and am doing great. Make sure as a fresh spawn you check zombie inventory for food, certain tree may spawn produce, check hay bails for mushrooms. When in doubt craft improvised hand wraps with cloth so you can clean small game kills.

Chlorine won't fix it. If you check the tooltip of the water bottle, it should say "water" or "gasoline" in the inspect item window. (middle mouse on pc)

Okay I still don't get it. What's the stigma about the unknown food can? I've scarfed down almost half of the entire thing before and proceeded to feed the other half to my friend SEVERAL times. It just fills you up really fast, it doesn't make people sick.

From my understanding, unknown food has a small amount of poisoning that will make you throw up, but it is NOT the same as gasoline poisoning. If you have a high immunity/ in good health, you can eat the whole can. Also taking 3 bites, waiting, then taking another 3 bites, repeating will allow you to eat the whole can without puking. If you have low immunity, in the red and starving, slamming the whole can will often make you puke.

It can be rough. Falling back to Fishing, Fire, and Cooking the Fish on a Sharp Stick will go a long way.

Usually I do sticks from bushes, 2 bark from a tree with knife. Use bark and stick to make fire starter kit. Use bark and stick to make fireplace. Boom

carp meat is the best to boil, since it loses much less calories than other meats compared to the baked version. I usually bake every other meat, except carp, which I use as my go to meal for long runs/walks to restore both hydration and energy.

You can but there is a chance you get salmonella poisoning. Multi Vitamins can help reduce the chance. Best bet is to cook it though.

I always enjoyed survival games. But why is this fun? Why is it fun being frustrated and having to figure out what button to press so that I can just boil a fucking pot of water? Has anyone played the forest? Build fire, find container, fill container,put container on fire, drink. Do I have to have to be a full-blown “savant” to make it through one full night? Do you remember when video games were supposed to be an escape from the mind numbing monotony of daily life. Now I come home and have to boot up a Microsoft spreadsheet with algorithmic machine learning just to figure out How long I have before I shit myself to death after figuring out what button makes me eat a fucking mars bar

Most of it is actually quite easy to figure out, there's even prompts for what button to press so I don't get what the idea is behind figuring out what button to press. Simplest way of cooking is sticking some meat on a sharpened stick and holding it over a fire, most people can figure that out.

If food is scarce, you should wait to eat it because the higher your energy (food) level, the faster you metabolize it and get hungry again.

Food isn't scarce, so you shouldn't wait to eat it. You are much more likely to get sick and/or starve letting food just sit in your inventory. You can literally hang around fruit trees or (preferably) hay bales for mushrooms to quickly and easily gather all the food and water you'll need.

@@taylormay9938 depends on the server doesn't it? Hanging out by hay bales doesn't sound like fun gameplay. What I said about how your character metabolizes food is accurate so you have to weigh the costs and benefits of eating your food or waiting

@@Binaural03375 I'm referring to Official, so this should be about as difficult as it comes when considering finding food. What's your source regarding the metabolism claims? I haven't seen any evidence of this, and I'm very doubtful based purely on my own experience in DayZ. Regarding how fun it is, I don't think many would complain about simply being within 120m of hay bales for a maximum of 10 minutes to completely eliminate all food & water concerns for a while. You can even loot the immediate area while you wait. Oh, mushrooms also spawn in forests, so this is an equally acceptable place to gather mushrooms.

I think WOBO or AlwaysStreams had a recent video about the metabolism being a flat slope for hunger now. There is a vid showing that previously, the Hunger WAS faster the fuller your Food/Water stats were. If I find the video I will update, Stay gold.

I'm not sure how fast the cooking pot degrades on a portable stove but I know the pot degrades very quickly when used with a cooking stand.

It degrades four times as fast on the stove, well, more accurately it degrades at the same rate but the stove takes 4x as long to cook.

@@Nitno But that's with any food if you eat too much... If you keep eating after the stomach icon appears, you puke. The unknown food can, however, can actually give you chemical poisoning, as they all contain chemicals. You can prevent this by eating them just a few bites at a time. I've only actually gotten the chemical poisoning from it once, but it definitely sucks. Lol
