[BOBBI SAMPSON] Welcome to UNC Pembroke’s Department of Social Work.
[NATURAL BREEDEN] I chose the MSW program at UNCP, just because- graduating with my bachelor’s of social work in 2016, I said, “Why not come back and get my masters degree? I had great professors in undergrad.” Said, “I’ll have ‘em again.”
[HILLARY LOCKLEAR] Here, at UNCP, the generalist program- It’s a broad range; it does focus on the clinical but also focusses on other aspects of social work.
[BREEDEN] We’ve gotten to dive into whatever it is that we’re most passionate about.
[SAMPSON] I have opportunities to work closely with faculty members on high level projects, serve as a student program coordinator for a mentoring program, and provide APA tutoring to bachelor of social work students.
[LEON WILLIAMS] In the UNCP MSW program, you’ll find lots of opportunities for professional development, some right here, right on campus and some in the surrounding communities.
[SAMPSON] I’ve conducted meaningful research and presented at several regional conferences as well.
[BREEDEN] - and just, the opportunity to attend conferences, build on my professional skills, speaking engagement skills- skills that I knew I had but they were like deep at the bottom.
[SAMPSON] Many of our graduate students take advantage of our graduate assistantships to gain experience, build their resume, and earn a paycheck while in school.
[LOCKLEAR] The part-time track is the track that I chose for myself. I just felt like I couldn’t work full time and do full time school work, so I decided to do the part-time track and it’s really worked out best for me. I feel that I’ve learned more, my grades have been better because I have been at a slower pace and I can focus more on my studies.
[BREEDEN] So, how did I find the balance between job life, internship, personal life? It was difficult. I know a lot of my colleagues said, “Hey, I’m going to knock out all of my classes in one day.” For me, I kind of broke ‘em up but it was still easy enough to say that, you know, I still have time to do what I have to do on campus, and time enough to get to class, and time enough to handle internship, and then the time to just maintain balance.
