Night before last. I stayed in a great spot in Natchidoches Louisiana, on the way home from Florida (it’s the town where Steel Magnolias was filmed). A parking lot on the corner of Church and Third. I called the police and asked for permission. Told them we were two senior women wanting to tour the movie locations and have a safe place to pass the night. They were very kind and assured us we were welcome! We were courteous and respectful. Spent money on food and enjoyed the sites. Not exactly stealthy but if you can get permission, that’s how I prefer it!

If you are stealth camping at a hotel, please use an oversized parking lot away from the facility. I stayed in a hotel in Ashville as a paying guest and I could not find a place to park due to numerous stealth campers. It was dark and rainy and I had to park a long way away from hotel and got soaked dragging a heavy bag, which should not happen when I am paying. I was also so afraid as a single woman, it was dark and vehicles had dark windows with their engine running right next to my door, it was scary. I had no idea if they was people up to no good or just stealth camping. I ran in and locked my door and put a chair against the door just in case. I guess they had the car running cause it was hot and muggy, but never the less, please be mindful of guests while stealth camping.

Thanks for watching! That’s interesting, I would think anyone who is a vehicle dweller would not want to park in the front row, as they would not want to be detected. I’m sorry that happened to you! I appreciate you taking the time to come in and share your thoughts. Have a fantastic evening!😃🙌🏼💯

How do you know they were all stealth camping? It could have been that the hotel was full and you came too late to get a good parking spot.

@@Ms.CynecaJames Maybe you are right, they weren’t stealth camping, maybe they were sitting in their cars with the windows covered for hours and the engines running while it rained so they did’t have to come inside to the AC and to a nice soft bed. 🤣 All kidding aside, I could hear the cars running off and on, during the night while it rained.

As far as I'm aware most van dwellers avoid parking up in hotel parking lots (not casinos, that's different and usually they have permission and security are aware of them) as much as possible bcos it's getting extremely difficult to get away with it and they don't want to be roused in the middle of the night and have to find somewhere else. They may have been up to something nefarious but pls don't blame van dwellers bcos most are trying to fly *under* the radar (and I'm sure there is a criminal element in the vanlife community, just with any other community, but committing a crime gets you noticed so I'm sure most try to avoid this). Not to say that you weren't right in being aware of your surroundings, we should all do that, but I think a van dweller would be less likely to approach you (risks blowing their stealth). And if, as you say, they were parked so close for hours I seriously doubt they would've been allowed to stay overnight (unless the hotel security was entirely lax, are you sure this wasn't people leaving and arriving?); at most, if they were van dwellers, they may have found they're able to score some free WiFi in that location hence parking for several hours there (altho I doubt this also bcos my experience of open hotel WiFi as a guest is that it's so bad to not even bother). Also, if you were so close to the parking lot that you could here car engines starting up it sounds like you were staying in a pretty low class motel in which case I think your expectations of the whole parking experience are overrated

@@susie9893 Hey Susie, good points but I don’t recall seeing any Van dwellers, only cars. I am an SUV camper in my spare time (love the community, looking to upgrade). I personally would not park in a hotel parking lot but I have no issues with people who do park there other than to request some stealther’s to be courteous and park away from the hotel so paying guests can get the best access. I agree the 4.4 star hotel could have had better security, lighting, and sound proof windows, especially for the high price 😊, but it was closest to the Biltmore, and blue ridge parkway entrance.

I don't remember if it was your channel or not, but I know I did recently comment somewhere about the plethora of "stealth camping" RU-vid videos that are spreading misinformation. For whatever reason, it seems to have become common practice for channels to park in lots such as Walmart and other well known overnight friendly locations and then go outside at night - with their lights - and record videos about their "stealth camping" spots. Similarly, getting out of the rig and making friends with others who are overnighting there. They will be the first people who make videos about how "someone" is ruining it for everyone as well, no doubt. It's such a shame; RU-vid is such a great way for people to learn things about vanlife but someone who knows nothing will assume that whatever they learn on RU-vid is gospel, especially if that RU-vidr has a lot of followers. So, THANK YOU for making a video that describes how to really be stealth wherever you park overnight. I would add that you should never park more than a single night in the same spot as well, as this is another thing that leads to you not being stealthy and also leading other people to think that if it's okay for you, it must be okay for them as well. This tends to snowball into people who are "camping" indefinitely in one location. This is never a good thing. Regarding hotel parking lots, I've worked hotel security and also night audit (different times & locations). If you want to park in a hotel parking lot, arrive late (at least after nine p.m.) and park as far from the front as you can. Stay in your vehicle, don't throw trash outside or otherwise be a nuisance. While working night audit I saw a number of people who seemed to park with us regularly, but none of them were bothersome and we weren't full so I was willing to overlook it. I only had two times where someone came in to steal breakfast and one was a homeless man (no vehicle). The other was a father and young son and I could tell that the dad was ashamed so I overlooked him because I didn't want to further embarrass him with his son. He was clearly down on his luck and felt enough shame already. He also only did it the one time or I probably would have had a discreet word with him. One of the women who overnighted did come in to use our bathrooms in the morning, but she also looked ashamed and didn't do anything but use the toilet and possibly brush her teeth so I also overlooked that as well. None of this is to say that using the toilet and/or getting a "free" breakfast is something you should do if you overnight in a hotel parking lot. I am pointing out that you are probably not as stealth as you think you are. Hotels have security systems; this can include extensive video AND audio. Yes, really. Audio to go with the video. Hotels are private property and they have an obligation to their actual guests. Please do not take advantage of this and don't assume because nobody kicked you out that nobody knows you're there. They probably do.

Thanks for watching and for sharing all your thoughts on the topic. All very good words of wisdom. It wasn’t my channel that you mention those concerns on. People will park where they feel most comfortable, whether it’s a Walmart, Cracker Barrel, hotel or other. I haven’t seen any channels promoting bad stealth camping practices. I think location of overnight parking is subject to where you actually are and what’s available. Once I was driving through northern Michigan and it was kinda desolate. Nothing but abandoned businesses and junked up properties. The only reason I didn’t stay in one of those places is because my van looked out of place there. It didn’t fit in with its surroundings. So I pushed through to a city and found a business parking lot that I blended in with. I agree with the after 9pm rule. Totally. Slip in and respect the property. There will always be people that think the world is their personal garbage can, throwing their garbage out their windows. This unfortunately happens everywhere. Cigarette butts, wrappers from cigarettes, napkins, cups. This happens in open sight areas red lights at intersections. It completely blows my mind. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate your support! Have a fantastic day! 🙌🏼😃💯

Nancy, that was a very helpful video! Being a good camping citizen is vital, especially, as you said, when stealth camping in a parking lot. Your practices make you an A++ camper, not impinging on anyone's rights, nor harming any establishment. I'm so glad you're getting your message out about that. Always fun to see a new vid from you -- your van interior immediately brings a level of calmness. Your quilt, table/bed setup, chair, and everything just looks fab together and perfectly cozy; I never get tired of seeing it!

Very good comments, I agree with you, I've never stayed in a hotel or hospital parking lot. But I have stayed overnight at Walmart and Cracker Barrel. Even at Walmart, I usually head inside for juice and snacks for breakfast or gas my car up the night I stay over. At Cracker Barrel, we go inside for breakfast in the morning. I'd say, generally use common sense, be courteous of the businesses and their customers that allow you to use their parking lots.

I would suggest that the people who are parking in parking lots etc and showing lights, playing loud music and leaving trash ISN'T stealth camping. If the average person is aware that someone is in that vehicle overnight then that's not stealth. And it's a shame there are some extremely inconsiderate ppl out there who are destroying this lifestyle for everyone - bcos of them it is becoming increasingly difficult to overnight in any parking lots (including casinos, Walmarts and Cracker Barrel), and many other places too. I'm not a vanlifer (but I hope to be one day, although at the rate it's going it might not be a viable option by the time I retire) but given all I've learnt from vanlife vloggers over the past few years, I would rather stealth camp in a residential street of apartment buildings. I can't imagine stealthing in a highly touristed area allows for much rest. I've seen vanlifers do this successfully - just need to prep your vehicle and self in advance of parking up so you can just crawl into the back and kip down, and leave by 7:30 in am when most workers are heading out. I work at a hospital and when I start night shift I sometimes see vehicles parked in surrounding streets that look like someone could live in them, but no signs of life. This is stealth, and if you plan to overnight in the city it should be the aim. Thanks for this video. I hope the "amateurs" (my new term for those who are spoiling things 😏) take note

Hi there... Really like your videos on this subject. I lived in my van for few months stealth camping. I do this to save money and stay close to where i work. Few things I did that i would like to share. 1. Getting a Gym Membership can cover most of your needs like. a) Shower & Toilet b) Charging your phone c) Gyms have Coffee and Hot Water Machines. d) Exercise e) Wifi (Internet) For me the Gym i subscribed at was open 24hrs and i can go in anytime i wanted. 2. 24hrs Laundromat- For washing my clothes. Winter is coming for us now so i will definately try out your tent blanket idea😊... Lastly, I also keep my bicycle in my van in case i will need to use it at some point for any breakdown to my van.✌️

I have been van camping for five years now. I agree with what you said about not taking advantage of facilities that are not intended for me. I have spent a lot of nights in Walmart parking lots, Pasta Garden parking lots, Denny’s parking lots, and Waffle House parking lots. Any place that is open for 24 hours is a good place to camp. Nobody pays attention to what vehicles come and go and if you can deal with a little bit of traffic noise or customer noise, then you’re good to go. Just be respectful.

I used to want a hi top van or shuttle bus, or even a van and then I decided I wanted stealth .. so I could sleep anywhere .. so I decided suv was best choice … I don’t have solar, trailer or hitch basket … just dark blinds for windows… only back windows ….and a curtain … for me it’s the most stealth I can be . If you darken front windows or use reflectix is def less stealth . Great video modern day . Hope all is well

If I were to stealth camp in a hospital lot, I would quite likely go in to use the bathroom and buy breakfast in the cafeteria. I haven’t used a hotel lot and I’m very unlikely to as I don’t feel comfortable in them. I’m not comfortable in or near cities. I certainly would never make use of their continental breakfast. I have overnighted at many Cracker Barrel restaurants as they are very welcoming to RVers. I always buy a meal - either dinner or breakfast - when I do so. In one there was a terrible amount of trash and I picked up a full trash bag full and told them about it so that it would get into the dumpster - which was in a locked enclosure.

Good, Important Video. I see sloppy, obvious campers. You can't tell I'm living in mine, even with the slider open. Paint It Black! Lol. It's dark when the slider opens. My friends have to stick their head inside to see how amazing it is in there. I save the bright colors and lightshow for campgrounds. Once I'm in for the night, that's it! Lighrs out. No noise. No glowing cell phone! I'm out by 5am, off to McDonald's for coffee. And,don't walk into a public restroom with a toiletry bag! Still shaking my head on that one Keep your front seat clear. One lady at the park is real obvious with her bedding in the front seat! When I see obvious people, I move to another location. I look just like every other minivan in the park. Thanks for watching! Yeah, you could comfortable with Boondocking as time goes on. It’s more nerve-racking when you stealth camp in the city because if you’re just driving through for the first time, you don’t really know your surroundings very well and have to scope out a good place to sleep for the night. But if you’re familiar with the area and driving through you know where is best to park. Boondocking is a little different because you’re out in the middle of nowhere and it doesn’t matter. Always enjoy your video's. How nice it would have been to have stealth camped in the hospital parking lot all the times my Mother was being treated for cancer. Sometimes, when she was out for tests, treament or sleeping, I would just go sit in my car to decompress.To be able to slip away for rest and a nap without the hospital activities and sounds 24 /7 and recharge myself was a necessity. Never judge why someone is in their parking lot. Also, the cafeteria food was decent and cheap.That said, are your windows factory tinted, or did you have them done? Looks stealthy.

Yes, this is why the streets around a hospital can be a good place to park up. Hospital staff are used to ppl sitting out in cars for extended periods and residents who live in the area are used to ppl coming and going at all hours. I'm sorry this was such a stressful experience for you but I don't think you would have had any issues having a nap in your car (if you parked far enough away not to be limited by parking restrictions). And I agree with your sentiment not to judge. You (one) just can never tell what's going on in someone else's life and if they're minding their own business, you should at least mind yours (better yet, be compassionate)

Wow, that comment must have been left by someone who thinks all van dwellers are no good bums in broken-down cars. If the cars look decent, I would think the hotel would look prosperous. I would never eat a hotel's free food made for paying guests, not would I use their bathroom. I'm sure the front desk would know who was staying there, anyway. I'm glad you leave early, especially at hospitals where parking for patients is hard to come by at the best of times. :) Wow, that must be a powerful power box to be able to run a Keurig which peaks at 1500 W. My 800 W Bluetti wouldn't be able to do it, although there are some low power electric kettles that might work. But I have a kettle and a butane stove, so I'll be able to make my tea. :) Nice to see a minivan camper. I've just got the seats out of my Pontiac Montana. My camp cot takes up one whole side because Monty is the short version without the DVD player and back storage--so not the full Monty. We can't have the front side windows tinted here, but all my back windows have it. Jon in rural BC, Canada

Thanks for watching! I’ve never seen any of those practices as long as I’ve been van camping, not to say they haven’t happened though. For me, the goal is to not be detected. Get in and get out. The power station I have is a Pecron E600 LFP. 600w 1200 pure sine wave inverter. I have a single cup keurig. The keurig peaks at 1400 and the Pecron pushes through like a pro! That battery is not as expensive as the others. I don’t remember at the moment but they’re may be a link to the battery in the review video I did on it and they’re may be a discount code. Check out my play list “Van Camping in Michigan,” look for Pecron in the title. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate your support! Have a fantastic day! 🙌🏼😃💯

Thanks for watching! I have window covers! They’re fantastic! I got them from heat shield. I also have ring guards on the outside of my van windows and that allows for the windows to be rolled down about 2 to 3 inches without any anyone knowing. in my humble opinion, they are crucial for camping or car dwelling, as you can leave the windows down when it’s raining a couple inches for airflow. We just crack a corner or two of the windows covers for airflow. I also have two small USB fans that I run in the van that help with circulation. Hope this helps! Have a fantastic day!😃🙌🏼💯

Yes, great content. And, presented in a very nonjudgmental way. Some hotels require guests to register their vehicle and display some sort of hotel tag on the dash. Are you ever concerned hotel security would notice no tag on your dash and knock on your door middle of the night?
@ModernDayPilgrim
@ModernDayPilgrim 3 месяца назад
Thank you! I appreciate those kind words. I have never stayed at a hotel that has that sort of security. I’ve never had a knock on the door, and for that I am grateful. @@ModernDayPilgrimgood to know. From what I've seen, on other channels, more and more hotels at the very least require you to register your tag number at the front desk, so security know who's parked "legally". I had decided it wouldn't be worth the risk but 🤔

Nothing wrong with staying in the parking lot of a hotel or even using their restrooms. As long as you’re being courteous and respectful, I don’t see an issue. Obviously none of this takes away from the hotel business itself. I’m sure if it was hurting their business, they’d change their policies.
@susie9893
@susie9893 3 месяца назад
If you have their permission to be there (like with casinos, in many cases) I don't see anything wrong with it. But if you don't then I think sleeping in their parking lot and then expecting to use their facilities for free as well, is a step too far; and given a lot more hotels are clamping down on free camping, I think that's pretty good evidence they feel the same
@cricket9878

I have a question. I noticed that you have rain/wind guards on your van's windows which allow you to crack the windows without getting rain inside. Have you ever stealth camped in the summertime? And if so, do you get mosquitoes in your van when you crack the windows? I have mosquito netting that fits over my door frames but I can't use that when I'm stealth camping as I'm afraid it would attract too much attention and would let people know that there is somebody inside sleeping.
@ModernDayPilgrim
@ModernDayPilgrim Месяц назад
Thanks for watching! I have stealth camped with these and I do crack my windows. I also have window covers, that cover the entire window. So in the summer, when I have stealth camp, I basically just crack my window as much as I can, with the ring guards,put my window covers in and just peel back a corner to let airflow in. I have two fans in my car. After I turn the lights out, I can pull the window cover back more to get more airflow. But if you do that before you turn the lights out, you will attract bugs and people. Lol.

@@ModernDayPilgrim Thanks for the quick reply. I am down here in central Ohio and I'm going to have to do some experimentation by stealth camping close to home this summer. I'm testing everything through baby steps. I don't have window covers for my passenger and driver's windows but I do have thermal insulated curtains that separate the cockpit from the sleeping area.

Have you seen the idea some vanlifers are doing now where they buy and power a small freezer and use it to freeze ice bricks for a larger cooler? Requires a lot less power. I think it's genius and is the option I plan for (although it might take up a little more space than a fridge depending on the sized cooler you want to get - need to be realistic). I've also seen a few videos where ppl have had endless problems with even the more top end fridges so I wanted to avoid that (that's one of the things the ppl with the freezer set ups have pointed out, that they never have any technical issues)

@@BrendaCole-wd3jf FYI, you may want to look at other power station options than Jackeree. There's their competitor Bluetti and others that have built in inverter: ecoflow and fossibot. And some (GREAT) vanlifers take it a step further and aim to leave a camp-site (whether urban or rural) in better condition than they found it. They pick up trash, including spent rounds (😖), and bury or take it with them. If we're going to change the public's opinion about van dwellers we need to become like this imo

We will agree to disagree first of all the guy is 11:28 probably a troll just walking into a hotel to use the bathroom is not a crime Secondly you're not considered a mobile dweller you're not homeless as a lot of us are and being stealthy is kinda hard when your a senior citizen living in a Ford explorer and only able to enter through the back side doors most only have the vehicle they have and unfortunately they will stick out no way around it life for you is a lot easier than others

Thanks for watching! I appreciate your comment. You are correct, I am not a full-time, VanDweller, and to my defense, I have never portrayed myself as one. I am a camper that stealth camps hrough Michigan while I rock hunt on the shores of the Great Lakes. And of course everybody’s living experience is different. My goal for this video is to talk about keeping stealthy when you’re camping in parking lots no matter if you’re a part-time vehicle dweller or a full-time vehicle dweller. And respecting the property. Have a fantastic evening! Thanks for taking the time to comment. 🙌🏼😃💯

I think the point is that if you know you're going to have to live this life (vs it unexpectedly becoming your only option) and you know you're going to have to stay in towns or cities a lot (for work or whatever) then you should aim for a stealth set up from the start (starting with the vehicle you choose). I realise some people don't have much choice but unfortunately it is becoming harder and harder to urban camp without stealth (thanks to the carelessness of the inconsiderate few)

How do go from city to another on a low budget Van life?
@ModernDayPilgrim
@ModernDayPilgrim 3 месяца назад
Well, that question could take quite a while to answer. But for the most part, you live small. Don’t spend a ton of money and things you don’t need, pick up jobs like DoorDash or those types of jobs where you can shop for people or do those kinds of things make money while you’re there. Save your money, When you have enough move on to another city and do the same thing all over again. Shop at thrift stores don’t eat out at fast food restaurants. I wish you all the best! Have a fantastic evening!🙌🏼😃💯
@susie9893
@susie9893 3 месяца назад
Remember, you're not paying any accommodation bills (either rent or council payments and maybe a mortgage) and utilities (except phone/wifi) anymore. And considering this comprises the majority of the budget for most people, well you can just live on less (even tho you do need to budget more for gas, car maintenance, insurance, etc; so you can't just expect to live on nothing - you will still have expenses, they'll just be different). If you're really interested there are a lot of good channels out there to learn from, from ppl who are doing this full time. Just avoid any that make it seem like it's just a wonderful beautiful experience every day - that's just not realistic. You want to pick the channels that talk about the good, the bad, the ugly - basically the realities of living on the road (and most agree that you need to have a plan B - what you would do instead if you couldn't stay on the road for whatever reason)
