In the illustrator class I had way back in the day, our final test had us tracing several things, including a "pen tool maze". We were graded on not just how accurate we were with the lines, but how few nodes/points it took us to complete them. Was really hard but a good test. Watching this video totally reminded me of that test! Good stuff.

Just found this channel! As an illustrator I don't tend to use adobe illustrator that much, I usually hand draw all of my work on my tablet in photoshop. Something about Illustrator always turned me off, it seemed too technical, a bit less "illustrator" friendly ironically! But your video's have been helping me out a lot!

Yes! Immediately after this one. Blew my mind. Loved the conversation on the term "freelancer" as well. Having recently left my part time job to pursue Illustration full time I think it is important to establish yourself as a brand/ business rather than a gun for hire. I think it definitely gives more of a "professional" approach and people want to collaborate with you rather than perceive themselves as your direct employer so to speak! I'll be listening to this channel all day while I work! Thanks again for the video's! Super helpful and informative! Would love to hear Chris on another podcast too like Adventures in Design!

Is there something to keep in mind to know how much do you have to stretch the curve controler in order to get a desired result or it's a trial and error process?

Lately, I've been using the curvature tool more and more... at first I didn't care too much about it and kinda hated it, but It's great if you give it a chance. I've recreated stuff that I orginally did with the pen tool and did it much faster with the curvature tool. I love it now. Sorry curvature tool for hating you at first.

What curve type is the curvature tool? It seems more like a b-spline than a bezier curve. I have issues with it because it's so rubber band like. I should spend more time with it though.

To create a curve you click once to establish the curve starting point, then click again at another spot to create the ending point of the curve, all the while you can drag to determine the "curviness." You can make straight paths with the curvature tool by double clicking the anchor points, if you want that. I know, it's not easy to grasp, and I'm sure there are tutorials out there than can explain it better than I do, but nothing beats playing around with it for a few hours and once you get the hang of it, it's pretty cool.

No it's cool- I get how to use it, but I don't get how to use it wisely/in context. Draw a curve with three points to it with the bezier tool and drag out/around on the third point you place. Notice how it only effects up to the previous point. If you do that with the curvature tool, it effects the profile of the curve 3 points deep. It's subtle, and if not tracing might give you a nicer curve, but still that lack of control is what stops me from using it to trace over sketches etc. Not saying it's bad, just explaining why I have issues giving up my "freedom" with the pen tool . If I were used to B-splines like for some CAD apps I'd probably use the curvature tool all the time though...I'm just so use to bezier.

Adobe illustrator tools are good, but if you find yourself doing a lot of Illustrator each week I would recommend using something else: CVallex Xtream Path www.cvalley.com/products/xtreampath2/ (their website is old...) But if you want to speed up your workflow by 10-20%, it adds up in one week! I have been using it for a few years.
