Great great video!! Answered some questions ive had for a while now. Especially with track order and if it feels right...That was a dope tip. Thanks so much man!! *Question* : when u measure loudness integrated, do u take the measurements after listening to the whole track or just the loudest part/hook? I used to do the whole song but now just the loudest part/hook. I want to make sure I’m getting an accurate measure. Thanks in advance!!!

Do you master in the stereo panel ? Then export each track you track out individually while each time changing the mastering settings to suit each track ? Or do you add the plugins you using for mastering to each tracks individual panel then use the master panel to level them all out to the similar volume ?

Good stuff Sean! Question for you... what’s your thoughts on single versions vs album versions as it relates to differences in mastering? Are you okay with a single version sounding different than an album version (in the case of “Off The Wall” the album version is brighter to match the feel of the other tracks). Do you think that is common and has been going on for a while? I never put much thought in having the same song floating out with different EQ curves even though that happens all the time on remastered versions. And surely only some people would notice anyway I guess.
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 3 года назад
Good ears man! Pretty sure you're the only person to notice that :) I made a slight top end boost to match the rest of the song masters (didn't initially plan to have that song on the album). I wouldn't want to make any serious sonic changes though, regardless... Ideally, you'd love to have the entire album done and mastered at the same time, THEN release the singles... the industry as a whole moves at a different pace now with single releases, not to mention just all the different platforms and streaming standards - much more common now to come back to mastering the album if needed and good practice to make sure it's as cohesive as possible
@apshinn
@apshinn 3 года назад
@@SeanDivine Haha you’re too kind man! Yeah... I guess that definitely used to be the case with the album complete months out and a buzz single coming out shortly after the mastering session, then the lead single around the time of the release. You’re right about the industry changing things. With it being more important for indie artists to release consistently and singles being more attractive and faster... I guess it’s common to have more single releases that aren’t part of a LP, EP, mixtape, or in the case of Drake... a Playlist LOL. But then the moments like you mentioned above when you didn’t originally intend to have a track on an album but it gels so well with the other tracks that you feel wrong not throwing it on there. Tricky stuff!

Hi Sean. I am in the dark about positioning the sequence of songs for the mastering. I have seen some people line the mixed songs on one track. I have seen the mixed songs left on separate tracks, positioning the beginning of the next song at the end of the preceding song on the timeline. In your video, you have each song on separate tracks, but they all start at the same point on the timeline. This confuses me, as I imagine upon rendering, all the tracks may play at once. Did you forget to mention anything? Please explain how this works. Please tell me about the metadata input. Do you program these in the DAW, or in iTunes? Thanks.
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 4 года назад
each track is being processed differently for the mastering in this case, hence the different tracks. I usually will line them up in sequential order in the arrange window to get a feel for intros / outros, prior to export. Metadata I typically leave to do in iTunes, depending the final format.
@taiwodairo5061
@taiwodairo5061 4 года назад
You exported the project at wav 24bit 44khz at what point do you compress it to mp3 (and at what kbps rate) for distribution. And for sites or platforms that require some particular or various LUFS does that mean you have to remaster at those respectively various LUFS?
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine 4 года назад
Most of the distribution platforms create their own lossy format version after you upload the WAV to distribution (i.e. Spotify and Apple Music). No, you do not need to create separate versions, as long as you’re adhering to proper mastering standards and avoiding excessive clipping. The LUFS standards are to simply to create consistency for listeners, not change the way masters are fundamentally delivered.

Great Video once again! For me there is only one thin left and I honestly have this question. Do you bounce the Album track by track or is it just one bounce with all tracks. I really don't get it....

it depends on how you have the sessions laid out and your setup. I bounce track by track since I have some outboard gear being used, so it must be a realtime bounce, of course :)

Hi Sean, great video. I am re visiting this vides! I am struggling to comprehend the sequencing process. So from what I understand… You bounce your final mix to a separate project, do your sequencing and transitions in a separate project. Then bounce a final time as a master. If you do this do you keep the same settings of your projects the same when bouncing a track twice. Do you not loose quality this way? Thanks
@SeanDivine
@SeanDivine Год назад
Hi James, there's no right or wrong way to do it really. I prefer to sequence in a separate session to get the transitions spot on. And yes, you want to keep the export settings consistent across the tracks and retain the settings for each at the highest possible quality.
@Produced_by_matusi

Quick question, if your first step is managing the songs long term LUFS to ensure they are around the same range. When you adjust the frequencies of each track, wouldn't you then need to go back and manage the long term LUFS levels as they will change?

These aren't listed in a particular order. For accurately measuring LUFS and matching effectively, you would do that post-processing.

Vinyl and casette tapes deals with intermission that’s what it’s similar between vinyl vs casette the difference vinyl don’t have a skip ⏭ while cassette tapes does have a skip ⏭ button. But vinyl and cassette tapes does have intermission but cd 💿 don’t have any intermission but to me I think album sequencing is not lost but according to the article I think everybody should stay on the song not skip ⏭ the track but Grant Norsworthy from pc3 told me that I don’t believe album sequencing is a lost art. I still listen to albums from beginning to end and I am not alone. It’s super important!

But it is true to say that fewer people are listening to albums from beginning to end. Many seem to prefer listening to single songs, or a playlist created by themselves or other people. Aka commercial or ads and that’s true Sean Divine.

Excellent thanks. I would recommend using a new project for mastering, however. Import your high quality tracks into the project then you can hear the tracks in direct comparison with each other, literally flicking between each one to compare the levels and eq curve. Also, it you move the tracks along the time line you can try out different fades, gaps etc without having to export the tracks to iTunes or whatever. And of course switch the order around simply by moving them backwards and forwards along the time line. Much quicker and easier, for me at least. Cheers
