MASTERING ENGINEERS LOVE THE BAX EQ

I watch a lot of youtube videos of different mastering engineers since I'm always curious what sort of analog gear they use. More often than not the BAX EQ is in their analog outboard gear rack and after owning this unit for a couple of years I get it.
The BAX Eq uses the Baxandall EQ Curve which are both Shelf EQ's for your Low End and High Frequencies (similiar to a bass and treble control on a stereo). In this video I review what I like about the BAX EQ and how it's helped my own mixing.

How do you like it paired with the curve bender? I have one and was looking for a finishing EQ for the bass and some top frequencies. I was looking at this or the maag (or even the hammer), and wasn't sure if you had thoughts after the fact

Great question! I was actually going to get the maag eq specifically to use after the curve bender for the exact reason you’re mentioning. I went for the Bax instead because i wanted HPF and LPFs in my finishing eq and wanted high and low shelf eqs instead of bands. The maag has mostly band filters at fixed frequencies (except for the high shelf air band) and i liked that the bax had more frequency options just felt a bit more flexible. both eq’s are really amazing especially with minimal phase shifting which is why my bax stays on my mix bus right after the cb. I really like the bax on mix bus, drums bus, keys bus. never had experience with the hammer but it seems like a great option for 3 band eq too!

Do you like to do the eq with the curve bender and the bax before or after the ssl bus comp ?

i’ve tried the combination a couple of different of ways and my favorite is C2/SSL Comp -> Curve Bender -> BAX. The Compressor first for 1-2 dB of compression, the Curve Bender for mostly the tone of the transformers and very subtle mid range boost and then the bax for broad low end and high end shaping.
