How do you like it paired with the curve bender? I have one and was looking for a finishing EQ for the bass and some top frequencies. I was looking at this or the maag (or even the hammer), and wasn't sure if you had thoughts after the fact
Great question! I was actually going to get the maag eq specifically to use after the curve bender for the exact reason you’re mentioning. I went for the Bax instead because i wanted HPF and LPFs in my finishing eq and wanted high and low shelf eqs instead of bands. The maag has mostly band filters at fixed frequencies (except for the high shelf air band) and i liked that the bax had more frequency options just felt a bit more flexible. both eq’s are really amazing especially with minimal phase shifting which is why my bax stays on my mix bus right after the cb. I really like the bax on mix bus, drums bus, keys bus. never had experience with the hammer but it seems like a great option for 3 band eq too!
I also had this type of reaction from people listening from my sweet spot, my wife gets angry every time she listens to music sitting in my chair because she thinks it's unfair for people not having this type of experience everyday in their lives. But I don't have ATC's, one day maybe, maybe not hahaha, I have a pair of Yamaha's HS50M with a sub, but my room is REALLY treated, I invested most of the "upgrade money" during my career in room treatment (studies and materials) and I know my room sound way better than some with very expensive monitors (I generally end up tuning their rooms after they listen to my situation). And yes, I'll upgrade my monitors one day and I'll probably go ATC or something as midrangy, I'm also a mid forward guy. Congrats on your pair, I bet they are amazing!
I love that!! Once you hear how music is intended to sound there’s no turning back from that. Investing in acoustic treatment is so worth it and your listening environment will treat you well once you treat it well. If you like midrange you’ll love the ATC’s the midrange is beautiful. Thank you so much!! I spent a lot on the speakers and now it’s time for me to spend some more on the acoustics!
@@jackc8120 I bought my speakers used from a guy who had a studio about that size i think for your dimensions you’d still be fine with 25’s or 45’s! I wish my room was a little bit bigger and so for the 25’s you should be good 👍🏻
The 500 Universe is definitely a fun one and cheers to getting started! So many fun things to explore from pre’s, eq’s, effects and it’s fun to think about what to put in next in your lunchbox 😁
I feel like most people get the API because they’ve heard of it and not to mention API invented the 500 series format. But when you compare the features, design, and the cost of their rack vs radial and other manufacturers they‘be been a bit behind on the times in terms of innovating their 500 series rack. They’re for sure the original and i respect that but there’s a lot of alternatives out there that are really improving upon what API has created. Never too late to sell that sucker on Reverb 😂
@@_philchoi you’re not wrong, but honestly the API gets the job done enough for me as I integrated it with a patch bay via DB25 connectors. watching your video inspired me to mess around with inputs 7/8 and I just made a big breakthrough in my studio so thanks for that :)
As long as gear gives you a good workflow that you’re comfortable and happy with that’s all that matters! That’s also so awesome to hear that you were able to mess around with the 7&8 Channel and find a good breakthrough that’s always a good day in the studio. I definitely haven’t utilized the 7&8 Channels and now i gotta try for myself too!
So rad, it’s nice to see a company so focused on creating well designed products. I don’t have a lot of other Radial Gear but they make some other awesome pieces of gear like the EXTC500 which is a guitar pedal reamper that fits in a lunchbox. They’re really creative with their products!
Thanks for sharing this! Well done and well considered. I was looking for a starting point for a 500 series journey and this is a great take on that. Cheers Phil!
Haha I wish i was loaded!! If i were i think I’d build a Northward Acoustics room from the ground up 💸💸. I feel very lucky to own these speakers and they are very much still my dream speakers after having these for a bit of time. I had to save up for quite a bit of time and sell multiple pieces of gear for these but it was so worth it.
@_philchoi I'm trying to decide between the ATC SCM12 PRO (passive), Dynaudio BM 6A, and Mackie HR824 MK2. All sealed because I suppose sealed monitors are more forgiving of improperly treated rooms. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
@@newgunguy4176 I would 100% recommend the ATC SCM12’s out of those 3. I had the 12’s paired with a Bryston 4B amplifier and loved how they sounded! it’s going to be more expensive but so worth it.
You should checkout Jesco from acoustics insider. His course is amazing and he teaches how to build your own panels, speaker placements and also talks about rooms like yours and how to deal with them. It’s a wealth of knowledge. 13:01 this is great advice. I just ordered panels from Music City Acoustics in Nashville and I’m super excited to get everything setup. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and also for the suggestion appreciate it! I’ve seen a couple of his videos and they are super helpful so i may definitely refer back to his vids when i start making my own panels. So glad to hear the vid was helpful for you and hope your panel install goes smoothly. Setting up treatment can be a bit of trial and error but hopefully you notice the impacts right away i know I did!
Hey man! Just wondering what speaker stands you’re using? Im looking for a set and can’t find ones that suit my need. But as soon as I saw your speaker stands in this video, I had to ask what they are. I have to get them!!
Hey thanks for watching! Funny you asked, my next video that i’m uploading is actually going to be about my speaker stands. They are Sound Anchor ADJ2 44”. They sell em one sweetwater and vintage king
These speakers really shine on mixing and critical listening but i still think they’re good for music production. Pairing these speakers with a well tuned room will do wonders for dialing in things just right in a mix. For music production I’ve always viewed that as a time to find the vibe of a song, thinking of ideas, and just letting your creativity flow. Since these are such honest speakers it’s going to impact your music production a bit differently because you’re truly hearing how things sound and nothing is getting hyped (when maybe sometimes in music production you could use a little hype). That could be a distraction for some people or relieving for others!
Thank you for your review. I also had them in my studio to try out. They are excellent monitors with a unbelievable mid range. The high's are very gentle and very detailed and open. They put each instrument on its own shelf and you can hear all the small details on each instruments sounds. It will tell you what is going on with everything from reverb tails to drums and vocals in a way not many monitors can do. The one thing I found however is they lack a cohesive sound of the music which every other speaker does for the most part. So to know how your mix will sound on regular speakers, you will need some good headphones are inexpensive smaller monitors. Have you found this issue with the ATC's as well or are you so used to working on them, that you know how they will sound in different stereos, Bluetooth and car stereos?
Thanks so much for watching! Really appreciate your comment and also for taking the time to watch my video. I actually posted another video on my channel about an Auratone mixcube monitor that im using to reference my mix on playback devices like headphones, bluetooth, laptop speakers, etc. I agree with you, i found myself wanting to supplement my monitoring with a pair of speakers that mimicked consumer playback devices which is why i got the auratone. it’s been super helpful to check that what im doing on my ATC’s can also translate to other systems.
@@_philchoi The ATC's are the most amazing monitors I ever heard. I am sorry I had to have them go, but I was so used to my Focal Twins for over 10 years. The learning curve for me on the ATC's would have taken me a couple of months. I ended up with the Focal Trio 6 's that cost thousands less, that offer mid separation, while still having some cohesive sound. They are very good monitors, but the ATC's honestly provide more detail while the Trios offer more low end bass. I rate the Trio 6's a 8.5, and the ATC's a 9.2. If the ATC's had more bass, I would rate them 9.5.
@@revelationsoundstudio You’re so right about the learning curve on these! I upgraded from the ATC SCM 12’s and even that was a huge learning curve for me. I haven’t heard the Focal Trio but heard great things. Knowing your way around speakers will definitely help you get to your end destination faster and that’s invaluable so i’m glad to hear the Trio is working for you. I think the ATC SCM25A’s are the best 3 way speaker i’ve heard. It’s just tremendous in the way it delivers low mid and high frequencies. For extended low end on the 25’s you do have to move it around in your room to find the ideal spot for low end response in your room but every time someone says they wish these had more low end i can completely understand where they’re coming from.
It's so good isn't it. I have the plugin. Obviously I want the hardware at some point lol. The yellow markings indicate the added features btw and the white markings are from the original TG desk.
Absolutely LOVE this unit. The color, energy, and vibe is why I buy analog gear in the first place 😄. I love that they added the yellow and white marks, it’s fun to use this eq with the old school eq points that they used back then.
The Bax filters are insanely good. I also started using it on drum buss at times. It just works on every type of material. I’ve always wanted a curve bender and ended up going massive passive instead - now I’m wondering LOL.
LOLL I just tried the UAD MP plugin this week and thought maybe I should get the massive passive. How are you liking the Massive Passive?? I haven’t had the chance to try the hardware version just the software. Agreed!! BAX is so good on anything you throw at it, love the filters for drums or for mix bus.
The MP is a great EQ (obviously) but recall is a pain unless you go for the mastering version. I don't think any plugin version really does it justice - and I've tried them all from UAD to Acustica to Pulsar. I suspect the curve bender is probably the same way. @@_philchoi
@@DragonBiscuit I haven’t tried any curve bender plugins but just knowing how plug-ins work there is some serious mojo, color, and depth to the analog version that i think is going to be very difficult to emulate with a digital plugin. Recalling on the CB is actually pretty easy since everything’s detented which is nice, i could see how the non mastering MP version could be a bit of a pain point. Things that surprised me were how much i liked the 12khz on this and how you can sooooo effectively make drastic boosts and cuts to really shape the sound.
I'm giggling here cause I'm on the same boat with you guys, I have the Curve Bender and want to include the MP instead of replacing it...only because I used to use the MP and love it as much as I love my Curve Bender.
@@Mike-vr7mb 😂😂 Haha join the party!! That’s the thing about people with GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) it’s never a “one or the other” choice it’s usually “just get both man” 😎 especially if it’s the CB and MP
There's no mystery! It's a mono amplified speaker! It's designed to be used as a mono amplified speaker! It's supposed to make instruments really stand out in the mix if they are recorded too hot! It's basically a tool for recording engineer's to make sure that everything is at the correct level! You definitely don't purchase two of them and use them for stereo like some idiots do....
the auratone is a fantastic tool to check your levels, it’s been very helpful for me to dial in vocal levels using a single auratone. Thanks for watching
@@_philchoi at least you seem to be using it correctly.... I have seen people using two for stereo playback, they have seen them in professional studio's and think that this is what they must need without knowing why they are actually there and how they are actually used..... In a large studio with a large mixing console, you might see two of them but the only reason why there would be two is for convenience, you might be working at one side of the mixing console and need the sound in front of you, you can move the cube around if you only have one or you can get more of them and use the one that is right there in front of you.... But when you see someone who has one either side of the computer monitor LoL, it's clear that they have no idea what they are doing! It just looks pretty and not very functional because you just know that they are using them in stereo.....
Hey, I was just curious to see what people thought about the SCM25A. I actually received the new version MK2 yesterday and am waiting for the Sound Anchor JD2 (ummm I was going back n forth about spending over 1k for stands🤣)which will arrive next week. Question, what's the isolation pad you have on there and do you think it helps with the performance of the speakers? Good review btw but also, where is your damn room treatment???😁. I'm also in a home studio. Anyway I'm very excited to have some time off and mix with them!
Hey, thanks for checking in, my ATC’s are on Sound Anchors ADJ2’s and they are incredibly well built and so freaking heavy! I got these isolation pads from a guy who custom makes them in LA. It was highly recommended by the guy i bought my atcs from. They’re basically concrete blocks that have other types of material joined together so that it reduces as much resonance as possible and really works. 😂😂 the room treatment (not featured in the video) is filled with GIK 244s to the left, right, and above mix position. the empty wall space next to the speakers is because i had 2 GIK bass traps there but moved them directly behind me instead and it worked much better for my room. I’m gonna do some reviews of the ADJ2 and my GIK bass traps. Thanks for watching!!
