Prepare yourself for a treat in this video as we dive into an extraordinary display of mastery by Kevin Powell on the organ! Our main highlight? MY reaction and perspective on Kevin's electrifying drop chords.
Watch as I break down the unique techniques and complex harmonies that Kevin uses. His performance is both captivating and instructive. In this tutorial, I will walk you through concepts such as sharp nine chords, playing over a G base to lead to a C, understanding the importance of inverted states, and implementing tritones.
There's more: Kevin Powell's mind-blowing inner movements are worth deep study. And we'll delve into some of them in this video, fast-forwarding to the parts where he really brings the heat 🔥.
One of the key concepts I explain in this video is the 'F altered' sound, which forms an essential part of Powell's performance. We'll take a comprehensive look at how this sound is achieved, note by note, helping you gain a different perspective on the music.
As we move through the video, we also examine how chords that sound like quartal chords arent always quartal chords. We'll deconstruct how he changes the chords in the middle of his drops - so swiftly that it's almost imperceptible.
Join me as I try to keep up with Powell, breaking down his techniques and making them accessible for you.
Get ready to enter the world of Kevin Powell's organ mastery. This is not just a video; it's a journey into the mind of a musical genius. Get your seat, and let's study together! For that second example with the F#min variant. There are many ways of looking at that based on musical tastes and experience. I hear variants of B dominant 7. Btw, Those are the same chords for Miles Davis’ Freddie the Freeloader,” except the later is premised on Bb7. (Listen to it and you’ll catch my drift. It's clear Powell is influenced by great jazz pianists such Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly.). From there, he does a II-V-I back to Abmi. Bbmin7b5, Eb7#9, Abmi. B Dom 7 or B7 leads very nicely to that II-V-I back to Abmi. Ok that’s my last comment. I’m not trying to be officious on Sean’s channel. Sorry for being a bored retiree.

@donmilland7606 Год назад
To be clear, those chromatic chord progressions for Ex. 3 are the substitutes for that II-V-I to Abmi as I mentioned. A chord progression is path and it should take you throughout the harmony of a song. Indeed, the structure to this song is very simple. It’s basically Abmi progressing to Ebma with a repeating II-V-I motif going back to Ab. If you can hear and know the basic structure, you cannot help but appreciate all the dazzling elaborations. You’re going down a path right? But you venture off to take the scenic more inspiring, more winding route . . . I spilled my coffee upon hearing this for the first time!

You all have to see the video and even that’s recorded midway. There’s a bridge with a lead-in with chromatic dominant 9th chords to the Gb9. It caught “Kelly Price” off guard as she came in too early. Then it goes Fmi7b5 to Bb7#9 (or similar altered passing chord), but he throws in a II-V-I, Dbmi, Gb9, Bma7 before going back to that altered passing chord. I play guitar. I had to learn this. Btw guitarists have a natural advantage of playing drop voicing and passing chords due to how the strings are set up. (Yeah its better explained by actually playing I must admit.).

Sean Wilson presents music to me that I would otherwise skip. But somehow, your video plays a man that I am used to seeing play differently. I never really listened to him play heavy diminish chords and key progression scale theories. It always sounds like mud to my ears, but I can dig it. It reminds me that some gospel fans enjoy the diminished sounds and augmented instead of fourths, fifths, and major thirds in-between chords. Thanks for the video.

Man I’m dealing with this too. My primary instrument in almost 20 years of playing is organ. I’ve probably played keyboard/piano in probably 2 of those 20 years…smh! So, I can testify that it’s definitely a difference in terms of feel.

@@BennettYancey Yessir!! I guess it's simply about practice, but practicing one doesn't make you automatically good at the other in my opinion. I know Cory Henry said that the organ and keyboard are two different instruments.
