I remember the first time my former pastor said that to me I was embarrassed and upset 😡. She then came to me after church to apologies and say that's their church. From then onwards I understood. I came from a classical church background 🤣😂🤣😂😂. I understand the tradition and that pushed me to be better.

Thanks man! To be fair, For most songs I take the time to transcribe the song Monday. Then I record Wednesday so it’s easier to pick it up… transcribing gives me that deep info quick

Yessir, this is sick! I love it! I played for a music loving pastor for about 4 years. We actually grew up together. He and Aretha Franklin were good long time friends and they both were on contract with Atlantic Records at the same time. He can and will sing all day and into the next if everybody didn't have to get up and go to work the next day. However, he's a great guy to excercise your chops with. Playing with and for those kinds of pastors and fellow musicians is truly a sweet treat!

I and most people I know use a combination of ear, theory, and understanding of concepts. He's mentioned that he has great relative pitch and he uses these same toolsets. Sean is pretty ridiculous, though!

One Sunday at The church i play bass for we were playing a slow song prior to the pastor preaching. Towards the end of the song the organist motions for me to take a bass solo. Of course I went in, whats funny is that as I was coming out of my improv I noticed the pastor standing at the podium watching me. I thought he wanted me to stop but he just smiled and went back to his seat until we finished. This happened a couple of times over the years and I appreciated those moments.

Listen, Pastor E. Dewey Smith is the man!!! His church, The House Of Hope, formerly Greater Travelers Rest is well known for being a ministry that had a HIGH standard for music / musicians. Rev is actually a dope music man himself, and certainly allows / wants the music ministry to stretch out! Sooo many great musicians have served at that ministry. Antaun, Jaden, Rick, Jubu, Jon Jon...bro their band is stacked!

Oh yeah I have played with many Caribbean preachers who are like that. They will take you through several songs, key changes and all. There are some pastors who can play keys too, and will walk over to your board where you are at and show you the tune they want to be played.
