Karl telling you how he would never do this for a client. But meticulously shows you the lighting problems he facing with the one light. And goes in showing how you can solve that problem with mirrors. Just to be aware. Every mirror is a different light source. All the different light problems he’s talking about and the fixes is his level of skill and professionalism.

My first thought was another mirror, but dragging the shutter for 45 seconds, I didn't think of. In hind site, a mirror would not have given the clean gradation you had. What was the ratio from key to back, 1 to 3? Love your work.

This is a brilliant "proof of concept". 👏👏 But there are so many steps, so many tripods and accessories needed, that in the end it is cheaper, more practical and faster to buy another light source (whatever it may be).

Is there any real benefit in long exposure though over taking 2 separate exposures and combining them in post. The only one that comes to mind is having it as a single file but not that beneficial over gathering more noise and having to move things around during exposure time for every shot you want to make.
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio Месяц назад
In this instance you could have photographed the background light as a separate shot as it would have no impact on the first stage of lighting but in other instances where you may have wanted to light the product with the same light used multiple times on the product itself during a long exposure then that would be more difficult to accomplish as separate images and blend in post, the reason is that the blending is more natural if it's in camera on the same exposure. It can be done in post on separate layers if the areas being lit are quite specific and separate. Last week on our platform I demonstrated this on the BMW motorcycle shoot on one of our live shows.

Hey Karl. What is the obvious disadvantage of using speedlites over other strobes? As you said you'd never using them for a client shoot.
@VisualEducationStudio
@VisualEducationStudio Месяц назад
There is no adequate modelling lamp on a speedlite for you to preview the shape of what the light will look like. And they're often less powerful.
