Many of the crews that went down were not found until the war ended. Many were never found at all.

in his book Crosby says there was a navigator in the 100th who would call out imaginary German fighters, and wasnt very well liked on the base to the point other people didn't want to fly with him so his crew came up with a ruse, over the target the pilot pretended the plane was in trouble and hit the bail out bell, the crew were in on it so only the navigator jumped out when they landed Crosby asked what happened to him ,he was just told "don't ask"

The belgium people could tell that Bob was German because of how he wrote the date when they asked him to, he writes day/month/year which is the european way of writing a date as you would know, whereas the American way is month/day/year. Plus he also had a german lighter and he was very green, ungrazed and clean compared to Bailey and Quinn, which doesn’t match the appearance of a man who’s just been shot down from the sky.

ayyyy finally back to the Masters of the Air. Episode 5 is really basically on par with the Pacific and Band of Brothers

Episodes 4, 5, and 6 are the best in the whole series in my opinion. They really outdid themselves with these three consecutive episodes. The ending of this one with the phone slamming down gave me chills!

Lemons working on the plane while it taxied really happened, just not on this date and this plane.

if i remember right its 25 competed missions if they don't drop they don't count to the total.

We Americans write the date differently! ANOTHER give away was the lighter the "German Spy" was carrying most Americans carried a Zippo lighter!

I did enjoy that S&C picked up on the dude blasting the nat'l anthem like a Nz at Nuremberg in '36, instead of just kind of mumbling through it. "..a little bit too loud for my liking.." Yeah. Knew it was a spy even before I saw the lighter wasn't a Zippo. I (unfortunately) still smoke tobacco..and have a Zippo collection. Including the one my dad carried in Korea in the '50s.

The German guy wrote the date in a European format of day/month/year and not like us Americans with the month/day/year.

After you’ve finished this series I’d love to see a reaction to ‘Memphis Belle’, a 1990 film about a crew on their 25th mission. Perhaps a little “American” and “clichéd” but an entertaining watch nonetheless.
