Hey guys, Danny and Niamh here, and we're back with more Masters of the Air!
This episode was so different from the others so far, but yet so interesting. The scenes with Quinn were so tense, and yet other parts of this one were so much fun. This episode left a lot of things up in the air so we can't wait for next week to find out what happened.
We will be uploading new reactions to Masters of the Air every Wednesday until the end of the series so subscribe to the channel if you haven't already and you want to see those.
Thank you all so much for watching, feel free to leave your thoughts down below! We appreciate all the amazing love and support that you continue to show us.

Bob was definitely a spy because he was too proud singing the anthem, had a German lighter, and wrote the date the European way, among other things

I agree with you and the rest on this thread. He also (correct me if I'm wrong) wrote the numbers themselves in a very 'Un-American' way. Dig the '1' and the '9'.

His first words set off alarms in my head. He made it seem like his group went second, when I’m pretty sure it was Buck’s formation that went late due to low visibility.

The new pilot who told Helen about Nash is Robert "Rosie" Rosenthal (worth remembering his name ) a fun fact is that the grandson of real life Rosenthal was cast as a B17 crew member in the first episode of series.

I don't know if he was in episode 1 but he was definitely in episode 3. He's the guy standing behind Buck who gets shot in the leg.

I read up a bit about Nash. He and the co-pilot went down with the plane, and most of the rest got out. I'd like to think they held the plane as steady as they could to give the others a chance. Also, we know from the opening credits sequence that Egan and Cleven are most likely going to end up behind the wire.

The interrogator asked Bob to write the current date at the top of his sheet. He wrote it using the European style of day, month, year, instead of the American style of month, day, year. That’s what tripped him up.
@Vipre-
@Vipre- 5 месяцев назад
He also wrote the number nine like a lowercase letter g. I'm not familiar with how handwriting was in the 30's and 40's but I've never seen any "American" do that.
@leizimmerman6184
@leizimmerman6184 5 месяцев назад
Not really. Our military dates with the day first, then month, then year. So, that's not relevant. Not having a Zippo is. The lighter did Bob in!!
@rolanddavis5936
@rolanddavis5936 5 месяцев назад
@@leizimmerman6184 The US uses month, day, year method of dating. Bob wrote the date using the European method of day, month, year. That gave him away as a European, not American. The resistance fighter was getting his revolver out to kill Bob dat the same time as the other partisan asked for a "light."

So there are several tells: 1. As you note early, they ask questions of location and national knowledge. As we saw Bailey explain that, 1 Rooth never played for the team they said, 2. He never knew about Trafalgar square because of where they were located and guys like him are enlisted personnel so less rarely to receive a pass away from base to even see London. Now a German infiltrator may not know this knowledge and we never see Bob answer either, and German infiltrators were taught to study landmarks for different units depending on the country. - funny enough this was quite the standard way to expose German infiltrators amongst Scottish aircrews as they’d ask them questions about English landmarks and plenty of the guts serving wouldn’t have much of a scooby… but the German would, cause amongst the Germans, they rarely distinguished the difference between Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. - also these questions were somewhat tailored with help from escaping allied personnel and also from special operation advisers who helped coordinate many resistance groups especially in late 43 and 44 and 45. As such the reason these questions are asked is they are general questions that they know through experience and asking other personnel what their units would most likely be aware of and what knowledge they’d have. 2. Second give away was the anthem, besides the occasional mistake what actually gave our friend Bob away was how he sang it. He sang it full and proudly, while compared to Quinn and Bailey, they treated it like a chore - cause they are brought up singing and like most Americans when they get out are probably sick of having to sing it as such either like Bailey treat it like chore or like Quinn can’t remember parts of it so just humm the tune. Germans in this era were taught to be proud and national about their anthem and would sing it proud and loud. 3. Yes you are correct on the handwriting. Even tho military standard was dd/mm/yyyy it was still standard after landing to change back to American date systems as to avoid personal and documents becoming confused. As such in this citation they actually would write it the American way vs military way. In addition yes the 9 bring a g is how the Germans in this era were taught to write it. Most Anglo Europeans by this point just done the 9 as the head and shaft but the Germans still taught to do the curve. 4. Yes they caught him finally on the lighter. It was an Austrian variant vs a Zippo which was standard American issue almost.

@@reecedignan8365In my time in the military, early 80s - late 2000s Military date construction was DD/MMM/YYYY . No dashes or dotes. I.e. 10 MAR 2024. Spelling out three character month makes it absolutely clear.

17:28 Although it didn't happen for this exact mission on this exact plane, that is indeed a real story. Ken Lemmons really did do that fix while the plane was taxiing.

In Lemmon's memoir, he actually fixed the connection points for magnetos while the plane was taxiing, but it wasn't Cleven's plane. It still happened though! And I think we didn't see a mission this episode because the previous 3 episodes we had intense missions, giving the audience a break.

I like how they show clues that make you suspicious of Bob, but never any clear indication that he’s a spy
@Jbryan23
@Jbryan23 5 месяцев назад
You are correct that they are only clues but I would say a man carrying a German lighter, had NO injuries like the 2 other American pilots even though he too supposedly jumped from a downed plane along with signing the date as day month year vs how Americans typically sign with month then day and year along with how Bob actually started the national anthem incorrectly with his first line, was all too much to ignore. It's rather obvious he was a spy. That was the justification for his execution for the resistance. They certainly had some strong circumstantial evidence that Bob was not who he claimed to be. Great episode here, I really enjoyed it.

The escape route they are using was called the comet line. The resistance group's that controlled it were extremely cautious, especially as they were inflitrated and broken a few times during the war.

New to your channel and love your reactions to this series! Killing a spy feels brutal but the consequences of NOT catching an infiltrator were even more brutal for so many people …the analogy of pulling on a thread was such a good one. It really makes me emotional to think of how incredibly brave and generous those people were that risked SO much to help downed allies. Unrelated but Niamh, your eye makeup looked so GOOD in this one!! 🔥 nailed it 👌🏻

Michou or lily shown in this episode was actually in her early 20's and real name Micheline Aline Dumon and only died in 2017. She regularly dressed like a teenager or schoolgirl to avoid suspicion Or is a reference to the real life Michou. She was one of the more famous guides on the Comet line as that particular escape route was called. She helped over 250 airmen personally escape into spain

"Can't even imagine what it would be like to lose someone and not even know if they're alive or dead..." Hope and denial. I've got a scrapbook of my Grandparent's correspondence with his folks back in the States, during WW2, telling them about this British gal he met. In one of the letter he talks about his brothers: one in the British Navy, one in the army, and one flying with Bomber Command in the RAF. The first two were safe and sound, but the last one had failed to return from a raid on Berlin. My family held out hope that he was in a POW camp, whilst my Grandpa's privately admitted to his folks that he didn't share their optimism. Sadly, he turned out to be right. The bodies of two of the seven crewmen of the Lancaster my great uncle served on ended up washing ashore in Holland, their Lancaster having crashed into the North Sea at some point during the raid. No one else's remains were ever recovered.

It might have been rash, the summary execution of the infiltrator, or might not have, but if they kill him, and they're wrong, then they lose one man. If they don't execute him and they're wrong, then dozens or more might die. Had to be done. Also, I heard from others whose knowledge far exceeds mine that the young lady on the train is definitely based on a real person who saved some incredible number of downed airmen.

Oof, the juxtaposition of things looking normal, it’s bright and sunny, then you see them picking through the bombed out rumble and retrieving the child’s body. That’s how it was. I remember documentaries about the London blitz how one house could get bombed and another house would be standing. “Blitz Street” is a profound and sobering BBC documentary on YT that recreates what the damage would’ve been like, and how it was scientifically possible that some things would be untouched, while next door was gone.

The were a few give aways of the infiltrator. Firstly how he wrote the date rest of the world way not american way. Now military did sometimes write it that way as well but he also wrote his 1's and 9's the german way. Secondly the anthem he messed up some of the lyrics , he also sang all of it which not everyone would know like quinn they ended up humming, thirdly the way he sang it was like the german way he had been taught loud and proud. We didnt get some of his answers to other questions but its possible he answered the london one as it was part of their infiltration research to learn about large places And the final confirmation for the resistance was the guys lighter. It was an austrian made lighter/brand when nigh on every american would have had a zippo
