I believe that question was written to get "penguin" as the definitive answer, but I'll bet even the question writers didn't know that there are no penguins at the North Pole.
Can you believe I never heard the right answer to this question until 1985? No matter what game show had "penguin" somewhere in the question or answer, "North Pole" would inevitably be matched with it!

If the idea is just to match, then you could answer "yellow" whatever the question is, and always win (or loose, depending on the stars). No no, making sense is essential to the "matching" part. That's the whole idea behind the game. In this case for example, i answered "Polar bear", because they said North pole.
@@pumajlr but therein lies the challenge! Many of the questions are open to interpretation. Then factor in an individual's knowledge, wit or imagination. Many contestants scored matches with seemingly bad or nonsensical answers. It's nothing to do with correctly answering trivia questions.
Sure we’re stupid back then! Half of the celebrities said that penguins were in the north pole. There are no penguins in the North Pole they’re all in the south pole for crying out loud
I can't believe almost that entire panel doesn't know that penguins are exclusively at the SOUTH pole. There are ZERO at the north Pole. I would have said polar bear, and been pissed that everyone said penguin because they are stupid.
How very unkind of Richard to say what he said about Mama Cass falling on everybody in the front row even for those times back then where being politically correct or whatever was not a deal that was just personally mean irregardless of the times
How RUDE was Richard to make fun of Cass's weight, WOOOOW!!!!! (and then to have everyone APPLAUD) His vulgar answer's isn't enough; now he's making FUN of people? I am so SICK of saint Richard getting away with ANYTHING on this show simply because he's Richard Dawson
You all really would have hated Don Rickles and Rodney Dangerfield and the classic Celebrity Roasts. If it was like modern times Cass' boyfriend or husband might have walked up on stage and slapped Richard like Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Jeez between the contestant saying "Eskimo" (Did she not know that an Eskimo is a human being or she's just okay with casual cannibalism?) and almost of the panel saying "penguin" which live on the opposite side of the planet from the North Pole, that question really highlighted some stupidity. Brett was the only one with a sensible answer.

Don't know her, however she seems like a person who would laugh at such jokes instead of being offended. At least I wouldn't in this situation, if I was her. It's not like he implied she was ugly or repulsive, which would be a cause for anger of course. To me it's similar to how the cast of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" made jokes about Drew Carey (i.e. his weight) and about Colin Mochrie's baldness. No resentment, they just gave as good as they got.
It's a great Thanksgiving tradition in the US, eating the Natives. 🤭 Although I believe eskimos primarily reside in Alaska and Canada, which isn't the North Pole either.

When Gene tells the new contestant they get to pick because some find a question harder than others, has a contestant ever replied, "I'll take the easier one."
I know Richard Dawson's comment was stupid but momma Cass laughed at it, people were not do sensitive, she probably heard worse comments. People just get so nervous they day stupid things up there, I've heard but the comment about eating Eskimos was more stupid to me than eating/stuffing penguins. They are human beings.
