Yes, GLAAD. My apologies. My feelings are that this is 1974. Times have greatly changed since then. I don't think what was said is a problem at all since it was the sign of the times. There is no harm with anybody's responses. This episode did air on CBS back in 1974 and in repeats for a while. I think people are very sensitive with this topic which is why this episode along with a list of others are now banned. IMO, people need to understand that this is from 1974, not 2012.
There was nothing offensive about the term fairy when Nipsey described it as part of the play Cinderella and even Richard's response was ok when he said "Being a fairy doesn't mean you're a bad person" but the last "celebrity" Ann kinda crossed a line by replying to Dawson "On the contrary Dickie, it does". Maybe if she hadn't made that comment the episode would still be airing.
It seemed like a barbed comment, given Anne's (top row) earlier comment about Gene. Anne seemed to be stating that she wasn't into men. Maybe Ann was threatened by it because she's just ignorant.
Yes...something called sarcasm. I was actually very much alive then and remember plaid and paisley and synthetic fibers. Gene was a great host and Richard was the coolest man on TV.
On another episode that was not banned Richard Dawson said of the answer Charles gave being the Staten Island ferry Richard said to Charles "I thought you were the Staten Island fairy'.
Shatner's answer to the Admiral/Captain question was brilliant. "Gamble" has a double meaning: 1) The captain shouldn't "play poker" with his men. 2) The captain shouldn't "stake" his mens' lives.
I LOVE CAPTAIN KIRK....Interviewed him on the radio and he took us out for dinner and bought supper that night and later we went over to Jeff Hunters house and played pool all night..
I miss the 70's! I actually wasn't really into this show at the time. I was watching the great soaps of the day. But these sure are great to watch so many years later. I did get into Feud though.
Watch episode Match Game 74 Episode 328 here it is used in response to what Charles Nelson would wear for Halloween, one answer said he would dress not just as a fairy, but the "Fairy Queen". this show pushed the envelope many times on what they could get away with back in those days.
Ben Stiller's mom. With Meara and Stiller (Jerry) for parents, he couldn't escape being talented and funny. When she flirted with Gene, I almost choked given that her Hollywood marriage that actually lasted was to a different physical type almost the complete opposite of Gene but I'm with her. Avid man watcher and variety is the spice of life. Got to appreciate them all.
Because the TV viewers were offended about what the late Nipsey Russell and Richard Dawson wrote on their cards and Anne Meara cheated by showing her answer to the contestants too early when the other panelists didn't finished writing down their answers and didn't get the contestant a chance to say her answer.
Man, what a difference forty-something years has been to our armed forces. The Air Force Sergeant wasn't even thanked for his service. I know Vietnam might've been on its last legs, but damn, I guess service didn't mean much in the early 70s. On a lighter note, I was thinking: the contestants on this show are probably collecting Social Security these days.
People back then didn't feel that they had to make a big show of "supporting the troops". Funny thing is those same people that tend to say, "Thank you for your service" are also the ones who are against using federal funding to aid veterans who need assistance.
That's probably not why the episode was "banned", I'm guessing it has to do with the end where they said "fairy" for "I don't want my son to be a ___", since it can be seen as homophobic.

But most of the boozers and users (I suspect pot was smoked, coke snorted and pills popped - Shatner seems baked) are able to focus for a minute to give plausible answers.
they did: looking back on a lot of programming, going back into the 50s, there was an awful lot in front of us without a word..standards and practices may have laid down the law, but there's always been someone who's found a way around it..this has been going on since the beginning and continues to this day..this is where shows like ''South Park' came from in the first place...
I love how there was the revealed answer blooper and it was conveniently replaced with a captain on a ship question.. I am surprised not one person even connected shatner (kirk) with that one.. Star trek was already out (it was done in the 60's) It just surprised me not one person turned and said to Shatner.. "You should know.. you are a captain on a ship aren't you?" LOL sounds like something Brett would say
A spaceship, not quite the same thing, but this was around the time when Star Trek fandom was just beginning to kick into high gear. People were aware of it, and reruns were on, but it hadn't reached iconic cult status quite yet.

@@jmholmes83 Right now, the only Goodson-Todman game show that's airing on GSN is Match Game, the '73 version (the Steve Harvey version of Family Feud doesn't count). Almost all other Mark Goodson-Bill Todman productions (Later Mark Goodson Television Productions) currently are airing on Buzzr (my local Buzzr station is KTXH-TV 20.4).

@@April_in_CT Probably not. He tended to not give "gay" answers to questions. Sometimes it seemed like he was silently protesting by deliberately not giving those answers. I like to think he showed his disapproval in pretty much the only way he could without it killing any career he might have had.
Richard Dawson was so quick-witted ... I knew he was funny and clever from Family Feud, but this show is more of a forum for his genius. I'm besotted with him whether or not he be sotted. (Rumor has it he didn't drink on the job. I'm not so sure about that.)
A friend of mine in Canada called the station back in October asking how many episodes they purchased from Fremantle Media. They go up to about episode 125. There is probably one week of MG74 episodes they have. That's it. I hope they acquire more as well!
Did the producers think that having a "Jewish" question was the right thing to do, since one of the contestants was Jewish? Even for the 70s that's stupid and insensitive.

This episode was banned because of "fairy"? I don't think so. The raunchy answer the black guy gave about the captain sleeping with his men would've been more ban-worthy at the time.
GLAAD has no authority to enforce episode banning. Only the FCC can do that. They can voice a grievance, that's all. GSN chose to take it off the air. That's not the same as banning it.
I found it really amazing how much we've changed as a society .. in that things we said in public back in '74, that would offended jews and homosexuals, weren't clearly prohibited. Today we're so much more PC. Even still, they banned this I suppose. I never watched back in the day, I was always working as a bag boy in a grocery store.
I think it's nice that people care about whether or not something might be offensive to another of their fellow human beings. I don't see a problem with it at all.

I’m confused... They banned this episode because they said "fairy" (hey isn't that a tiny mythological character with wings???) Oh I know because it has a second meaning... I don't think it was banned. It probably doesn't air anymore because the master tape is too messed up. That's a big reason why GSN doesn't air certain episodes anymore.

AD77 The fairy answer was offensive...kinda. Richard said being a fairy doesn't mean you're a bad person but Ann said that they are bad people. Fairy is another way of saying homosexual so she's saying gay people are bad people.
The episode wasn't very offending, or even the question itself, but Ann Elder's comment of "On the contrary, Dickie, I think it does!" was the offending comment that got the episode banned.

@@bostonrailfan2427 CBS produced and distributed Match Game to its affiliates in its original run. Fremantle Media now owns the distribution rights to Match Game. There's nothing stopping them from distributing these so-called "banned" episodes as part of their packages to the networks that air it if they so choose. Banning means that it's illegal to air the episodes. It's not.
