Gary Burghoff is late to the taping of Match Game 75 because he forgot it was daylight savings time. Johnny Olson fills in for Gary this entire episode. Starring: Leslie Nielsen, BS, Johnny Olsen, PD, RD, MW
All these years I've been watching reruns of this show and seeing and hearing Marcia Wallace, and it never dawned on me until within the past year that she voiced Bart Simpson's teacher.
@@jamesraines1930 1. It's "you're", not "your". 2. That's not the saying, you got it wrong (Hint: rhymes with deer, begins with "qu"). 3. I am not your son. Even if you have children, you're still probably gay.
It was Gary Burghoff. Charles was out doing a play while Gary filled in for him for quite awhile on Match Game 75. Charles didn't come back for another 2 months!
@@tiffanymorgan6562 You hit the nail right on the head!! Johnny Olson was a terrific fill-in.If you watch Tattletales from a week in 1974,he was a substitute announcer.Full-time from 1982-84.I guess at the time,Mark Goodson and Bill Todman wanted him to concentrate on The Price Is Right, since it was still finding its footing.
Gene Rayburn lived on the East Coast and would fly every two weeks to California for the tapings. They taped 6 shows on Saturday and 6 on Sunday (5 daytime shows and one Match Game PM).
@@shawnsmothers4876 Yep, Leslie 75 was still known for dramatic roles, often playing villains. He hadn't yet become a breakout comedian and top-tier star.
MG taped 5 (or 6) shows Saturdays and Sundays, every other weekend to accommodate Gene Rayburn (who lived in Massachusetts at the time), and also because the same studio was being used for Price Is Right tapings on weekdays.
I don't believe ANYone "liked" Johnny Olsen....he was,is and shall EVER be " Loved "... the man had a certain quality, personality...something that has never really been equaled
Ten years prior to this episode, Johnny Olson appeared as a "guest" on What's My Line, which he also hosted. He was quite the talent. What's My Line? Johnny Olson (1965)
I remember this show from my teenage yrs. It was funny then, funny now. Even though it was a game show, I found it to be more of an entertainment show.
This was the only episode where Johnny Olson was sitting in for Charles Nelson Reilly. He has been an announcer on so many game shows including "The Price Is Right", "Tattletales", "What's My Line?", and many others. This show was done at the then Television City, which was later became the Bob Barker Studio.
DarkLight753 you learn something new everyday! never thought i'd see johnny as a pannelist! Had he lived around the late 80's early 90's, he would have been a great imaging voiceover next to the great Charlie Van Dyke, only reason i say that was because he's done announcing for a show for WBT-AM 1110 in the Charlotte, NC market.
Never thought I'd see Leslie Nielsen on a panel show before he turned to comedy in Airplane! He said he had always been cast in dramatic roles before Airplane! and he had always wanted to do comedy since becoming an actor. It was also reported he was an avid prankster off-camera :o)
In 1975, Daylight Time started on February 23 (due to aftereffects from the previous year's energy crisis). MG taped Saturday and Sunday, so the clock turned after Gary went to bed Saturday night -- WHOOPS!
Announcing Legend, the first announcer of the new price is right a show blessed with the perfect host and announcer and somehow when said announcer was tragically lost Rod Roddy stepped up and filled the shoes... and sadly years later also would die, Bob Barker outlived 2 of the greatest game show announcers on his own show.
Probably about the only opportunity a question ever gave a panelist to "innocently" refer to giving someone the finger. This was right up there with her observations on marriage some episodes back, with a husband who was almost done while the wife was just getting started. She doesn't hit often, but when she does she sends it right out of the park and into the next county.
Leslie Nielsen was only known as a dramatic actor at this point (and a very good one), not a comedic actor. I wonder if appearing on The Match Game and other game shows helped him get hired for comedies. He still did some dramatic acting after he started doing comedies: try the 1987 movie "Nuts" to see him in very good dramatic role.
Such an innocent (on the surface) game show. But listen carefully and quite a few risque things get batted around for the time. Flew right over my head as a kid, but hilarious to catch them as an adult.
Motown and R & B wasn't quite as much of a "crossover" to older audiences as it is now, but I agree that it is odd that so many of them never had heard of him. Personally, I would have said Jackie, Mrs., and Sugar Ray before Smokey. This was actually a tough one for the contestant, to be honest.
I heard of Smokey, but I had forgotten about him before the answers were revealed. Swiss Family would have been my choice. I had to look up Jackie. I was never really into sports so I don't feel as bad not knowing him. I recognized the name though.
Honestly, given the time period and that it was just a few years after "Lost in Space" was on the air, my first thought was Will Robinson. Jackie Robinson is definitely the best answer though.
Just because they don't know anything about Motown doesn't mean they were "white bread". The Match Game crew were among the hippest folks of their generation, being show business veterans of the old school. And you can be sure they'd have known who Bessie Smith or Billie Holiday were if they had come up in a question.
Sadly, later this same year in May of 1975, John Levinson was tragically killed in a car wreck, involving a pileup on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago.
Jerry Butler You know you're right? I looked up his obituary again and this time I noticed his age. The John Levinson that died was 59. I didn't see that the first time. This John Levinson is obviously not 59. But here's the kicker. If you saw the episode before this one when they introduced John Levinson he mentioned he was a professional golfer. And John Levinson's obit mentioned he is survived by a son John. So I'm wondering now if they could be father and son. 🤔🤔
oh wow, I kinda wish this episode had been titled "Leslie Nielsen on panel" or something because that would've gotten my attention more than Johnny Olson filling in! I had NO idea Leslie was ever on this show!
I agree with torchkit. This has more to do with age than anything else. Gene, Brett, Olson, and Leslie Nielsen would've been teenagers in the 30's and 40's. Richard was a little younger. I'm fairly certain that Bing Crosby and big band music would've been their music to grow up with. I'm not surprised that Gene or Brett were unfamiliar with a top Motown artist.
Finally ! They put closed captioning on this episode. Clearly, Gene and Brett were not music fans even in the '70's, I knew who he was as if I was like 9 in '75. Sure wish Johnny Olson could have stayed being on instead of Gary Burghoff. He was a fine actor on M*A*S*H but you wouldn't want to have him as a neighbor!
I don't remember the game so I don't know if they had to modify Johnny Olsen's duties on the show for this episode. I guess they couldn't wait for whoever that was to arrive since the REAL audience would get restless waiting.
If it's the day they turned the clocks ahead, it'd be Sunday. Odd they'd tape a show on a Sunday, but who knows. Maybe back then they turned clocks on a different day.
I didn't realize commenting on RU-vid was anyone's idea of having a problem. Also, you completely missed my point. They wouldn't have been aware of Smokey Robinson any more than they would have known who the Grateful Dead were. Motown was for the youngsters, not middle aged folk. And it doesn't mean they weren't aware of the black music and culture of their own generation. Otherwise, people like Nipsey Russell and Scoey Mitchell would never have found their way on to the show.
Each contestant was given 2 chances to match all 6 celebrities. The lady matched 3 celebrities in the first round so she could only match 3 celebrities in the second round. Since the gentleman matched none in the first round he had the opportunity to match all 6 in the second round..
Those '70's clothes are a hoot! The pregnant lady's name was Hooker. Wonder who the father is/was!? I would have said "A CANNON" for the Cannon question.
Expecting those 50+ year old celebrities to know who Smokey Robinson was is similar to expecting a 50 + person today to know some current rapper. Not likely.
