As a german Bobby Moore was my favourite player outside Bundesliga. I loved him. We was so lucky win the game against England. RIP all my ideals from the 1966 and 1970 to from England
Great documentary! As a Brazilian old style football passionte, I always comment to my mates, that If Brazil were unsuccesful in Mexico 70, the Jules Rimet trophy would be in marvelous hands: England, Italy, West Germany and Uruguay, they were wonderful squads. Eduardo Bastos. Sao Paulo City - SP - Brazil.
I have this on video in the garage, somewhere. So happy to see this on RU-vid. I watched this so many times after it was originally shown. Thanks so much magus 26 for sharing this.
In about 1976 on a freezing winter Saturday afternoon when AFCBournemouth weren’t playing at home , my Dad took me into our local very conservative towns’ privately owned department store / restaurant . The owner himself , a rotund guy in his late 60s complete with the bald but remaining brylcreeme slicked back hair called Reg Alderson recognised my old man due probably to his being a gigging pianist in local clubs & pubs and seeing me leafing through the crummy LPs on offer beckoned us ..I still remember this big old bloke handing me an LP with cover shaped like a grey Mitre Football as if he was handing the 13 yr old me the keys to every horny girls’ bedroom in the district . “ You Promise to look after this “ he commanded without knowing if I gave a hoot about footy. As it happens I did & still had my elder brothers 1970 Esso coin thing c/w poster. The album covers were a fold - out football and in colour & all the 66 Final - brilliant . The music was probably the Cheeseyest festival of covers I’d ever suffered. “ Back Home “ was side 1 track 1 & is the exception & still evokes those days of being 5 or 6 . As for Aldersons Department Store , it’s 1st floor is still a restaurant but now called Bombay Nights & the GF is an Estate Agent. 😂👍❤️
only wish Brazil won the 1982 World Cup for the marvellous spectacular football and goals they scored in that World Cup england had an amazing side in 1970 very strong team and squard ,banks moore charlton lee, peters hurst labone ,a powerful England team in that 1970 World Cup ,and that was Brazil toughest game it was 50 50 that match
@Joegamer55 Terrible? Couldn't disagree more. The regulation 90 minutes was fantastic, an open attacking game, end to end with lots of chances created, tension building with every minute, West Germany equalising at the death. Then of course the extra 30 minutes were insane. If you get a chance watch the entire game, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
@Joegamer55 The first half was ordinary but the game exploded after half-time...the Germans threw the proverbial kitchen sink at Italy who defended for their lives. It was gripping, you couldn't take your eyes off the TV set. Then they equalise in the second minute of stoppage time. Then you had that incredible extra-time. I'm not saying it's the greatest football game of all time but, quite rightly, a it's a contender.
I always thought this world cup was the finest ever. And the game against West Germany was on TV on a late Sunday afternoon, and after which the pints never tasted the same that night. The summer of 1970 was a scorcher throughout in the UK. It is seldom mentioned that the recognised deputy for Gordon Banks was Everton's Gordon West who had been part of the team that won the first division title in April 1970.West was a great shot stopper and had a huge presence. He declined the invitation to join the England squad and was replaced by Alex Stepney and Peter Bonetti. West was never selected again, though fans from that era who saw West might concede he would have been a safer bet to replace Banks. England had a great side, that never really recovered from this sickening defeat by West Germany who were aided by a stonewall penalty turned down when England were ahead.
@@Lord_Hillcrest I met Gordon West at Everton foundation event years ago, he was given the deputy to Gordon Banks. But declined the offer to go to Mexico, due to his wedding in the summer of 1970 West was a great shot stopper, and Alf Ramsey, after giving him caps in 1969 never selected him again.
@@Lord_Hillcrest He would have played in the quarter final against West Germany after Gordon Banks was floored with a stomach virus that confined him to be near the WC ! The goal that Franz Beckenbaur scored to get his team back to 2-1 was a long range shot that went under Bonetti's body. West would have saved this and not lost the flight of the ball for the equaliser. Westy always said he had no regrets losing out in 1970. Sadly his marriage ended in the mid 70s, by which time he was at Tranmere Rovers He later worked at the Woodvale airdrome in Crosby Liverpool, And was well liked and known around this area
@@fisherpeter695 That was my point , he wouldve played in the quarter final . Honestly i think most keepers looked at the Beckenbauer goal as savable . The second one Seeler could not believe his luck , the header itself and how flat booted and out of position Bonetti was .
What a Nice day of brazil In 1970 have pool of brazilian networks in Television (Globo,Bandeirantes-Record,Tupi/Itacolomi) Narrator:Geraldo José de almeida,Fernando Solera,Fernando Sasso,Oduvaldo Cozzi and Walther Abrahão
The Germans brought the European game to life. What Brazil and Peru did for South American football (and for football as a whole), the Germans did for the European game.
England underachieved in the 1970 World Cup. Jeff Astle missed a sitter against Brazil and Bonnetti let in 3 goals he shouldn’t have against West Germany
The Germans succeeded where England failed, because without any kind of winger in their squad, England had to stick to their counter-punching 4-4-2 even after it was clear that this system demands too much from the midfielders and full backs. It might have been suitable in European conditions but never in the heat of Mexico and this should have been expected.
Pure luck on the 2nd German goal? Delusional. It didn't hit the back of his head, he actually headed it backwards majestically. One of the best headers ever.
Some years ago a World Soccer columnist compared 70 and 86 Cups and concluded the latter was better. The sun, the heat, the altitude makes the teams focus on ball skills, not on speed and power and not on running wild, they must pace themselves. Brazil and Argentina, not the fastest, but the better ball players (so why us Mexicans never good enough, that's another debate). Brazilian champions also stated that in Rio and Sao Paulo they also never play in mid day, the played at night or late afternoon. Pelé himself said they were better phisically prepared for the climate and didn't rely solely on talent (of wich they had loads)...
How Jeff Astle missed that sitter beggars belief! I was playing cricket for Stanmore at Radlett that day and the radio commentary was on in the pavilion; I had just chased down a ball to the boundary in front of the pavilion and heard that commentary. :( Watched Big Jeff score many amazing goals for Dunstable Town in 1974-75; what a footballer! Ken, Toronto, Canada
Absolutely disgusting that Brazil kept England waiting like that. Ramsay should have seen that coming and told his players not to leave the dressing room until the Brazilian team had come out.
A great world cup forever on my mind and at nearly 8 everybody wanted to be pele or jaziniho England were good side and if only jeff astle would of scored that goal we would of got a draw against the best team in the competition cried when we lost to west Germany after being up 2-0 and what fantastic commentary from the great Hugh John's. that world cup had everything that was great about football and the world in those days NOW LOOK AT IT! TAKING THE KNEE BLM and GAY and LESBIAN FLAGS EVERYWHERE WTF has the BBC and the whole corrupt media done to our country! Destroyed it with political GARBAGE!
@@paulchristopher8634 Banks wouldve definately saved the first one . Second goal was just a freak . Colin Bell was brought down and shouldve had a pen .
WE ALL KNOW THE KRAUTS LEAVE NOTHING TO CHANCE THE MOUSTACHED CRY BABY STIELEKE ,( AFTER MISSING HIS PENALTY AGAINST FRANCE ) PLAYING FOR REAL MADRID WAS SEEN SKULKING ROUND SPAIN'S HOTEL WITH AN ENORMOUS SUITCASE OF CASH JUST TO ENSURE SPAIN DIDN'T CAPITULATE AGAINST ENGLAND 82
@@MichaelBarry-wj3eeit wasnt Spain or anybodies elses fault you couldnt score even one goal in the 2nd round of the 82 world cup. Your team ran out of goals and ideas.
Despite how good this tournament is it was fixed . In the semi - final . Brazil were originally meant to play Uruguay at Mexico City , but at the last minute they changed the venue to Guadalajara. Which was the main venue of Brazil’s games . Guadalajara was humid and had a high altitude. Making it a nightmare for first timers to play in . Brazil had been accustomed to that setting all tournament. But Uruguay had to redirect and travel to Guadalajara from Mexico City . So it obviously heavily affected their game . Which was why they lost . This was selective cheating , because FIFA had to let Brazil win because it was well known this was gonna be pele’s last tournament.
Mexico City is 2200 meters high, Guadalajara is 1500 meters high. That's not penalizing them too much. In fact, that gives them an advantage. I lived in a city almost 2400 meters high, we'd go crazy with all the oxygen at lower altitudes.
@@lawrencetaylor4101 Host nations always get preferential treatment as FIFA wants them to go as far as possible for financial reasons. England played all their games at Wembley, West Germany's game against Poland in 1974 should have been postponed but the conditions favoured the Germans, Argentina 78 and Spain 82 all had dodgy decisions go in their favour in the first round etc etc.
