In their opening match of the 1974 World Cup, Poland met Argentina. Within eight minutes Poland were up 2-0 as Grzegorz Lato opened the scoring in the seventh minute and just a minute later Andrzej Szarmach doubled the lead. In the 60th minute, Argentina cut the lead in half when Ramon Heredia scored. Two minutes later, however, Lato scored his second, which turned out to be the winning goal as Carlos Babington gave Argentina their second in the 66th. The match finished 3-2 as Poland won. Poland thrashed Haiti 7-0 in their second game, with a hat-trick from Szarmach and two goals from Lato. In their final match of the group stage, Poland met Italy. Poland were already through to the second round but needed at least a draw to win the group. Poland defeated Italy 2-1, finishing at the top of the group. In the second round, Poland first won 1-0 against Sweden, who had not conceded any goals in their first three matches. Lato scored the only goal of the game. In the next game, Yugoslavia conceded a penalty from Poland in the 24th minute, and Stanislav Karasi tied it up for Yugoslavia in the 43rd. Lato scored the winning goal. Poland faced hosts West Germany in the rain; Gerd Müller scored the winning goal in the 76th minute for West Germany. The Poles defeated Brazil in the third place match.

If anything, look at Bobby ''Blunderman'' Moore,...he fails to attack the ball at the near post as the cross is about to be delivered. Bell, being too far behind Toshack could only hope to chop him down and concede a penalty. But further errors would soon be on their way from Mr. Moore which prove to be extremely costly.

@@lennylaa1686 Moore was a great player - but he was passed it. Ramsay's loyalty to him was maybe his biggest mistake as a manager. West Ham even offloaded him in 1974 - playing out his remaining career in a lower division. lt's a good example of why Sir Alex Ferguson had such sustained success - he always knew when to move on great players.

A very special midget dude. Wouldn't have made a difference. Right after England scored through Lineker Argentina went up the field and hit Shiltons post, he never saw it. In no man's land and neither would Chris Wood or Ronnie Wood.

Banks was the last great England goalkeeper. The rest were overrated.

The writing was on the wall after Mexico '70.

We weren't that bad (perhaps a little short of genuine world class players), just that visiting goalkeepers back then saved their best for Wembley (apart from the Austrian goalie who conceded 7, ironically in the very England fixture prior to this qualifier).

And we only qualified for Spain because results went our way.

Me - Indeed, Poland were the 2nd bet team at WC 1974 behind the Dutch, lost to Germany in SF on a waterlogged lake.

One error in each game - hardly hopeless.

Because Poland were playing home so had first choice of shirt colour , so they played in white , England in yellow

Then he made Nottingham Forest 2-nd division champion, next year 1-st division champion, and the following years in 79 and 80: The European clubs (the current CL format) champion. This record (achieved with Forest) will never be broken by any team at any league in the future, especially now that big money limits the competition in domestic leagues to 4-5 known clubs. You will never see the likes of Aston Villa becoming CL winner like in 1982 ever again.

As for why their are so few Asian players a Google search will no doubt bring up opinions and articles which we are both likely to agree with. In respect of the corner shop 'joke' that might be the case in respect of the first wave of Asian immigrants, but their sons and daughters are now our GP's, surgeons, dentists, accountants, government ministers and university professors. Imagine if we had sent them all to Rwanda....we'd be in more of a mess than we currently are.

Those euro competitions only had four teams qualify for the finals, and the tournament wasn’t regarded with the same importance as now. The two World Cup failures were another matter and particularly disappointing because the sad thing is England had some really good players in both 74 & 78. In fact better players than many of the squads that we qualified for world cups with

@@radjishdoekhie8464 Clubs? No it wasn't because South American clubs always beat English clubs in Intercontinental Cup. Also English clubs were fielding non english - Scottish, Welsh, North and South Irish who are not eligible to play for England national team and English clubs were always breaking 3 foreigners rule before Bosman 1995. Look what happened to Man Utd and Blackburn in early to mid 90s. They can't even beat Norwegian, Polish, Turkish clubs. No one remembers club football from those old days, it wasn't significant as international football.

What people always seem to forget is that there were no play offs in those days. If you came second in a group you were out.

Like I said I am half English, born in London and I want England and clubs to do well. But English are always sour grapes for everything. English football fans always says this is not important, it's an egg cup, plastic trophy. No it ain't Most important trophy, holy grail is obviously the WORLD CUP then continent championships in that order. Club is UEFA champions league then FIFA club world cup. For me FA Cup or League Cup, Charity shield have less importance than the above. I remember people were cussing UEFA Nations League. OK it's not important as World Cup or European Championship but still an important trophy. Olympic football is also very important trophy. It's just because English can't have it so we dis it. This kind of arrogant mentality is really bad and bad sportsmanship that's why we don't win anything at international level. Club football is full of mercenaries. Owned and managed by foreigners. Premier League is successful now because of foreigners not because of English. And Premier League money is a dirty money. Not clean like German bundes liga.
