France, Italy, Brazil played excellent football, Italy more from 2nd Round but they are easily three of the most remembered teams of all time. I was gutted when Brazil got knocked out but Italy did play well!
@leonardimas1 England, Wales, Scotland and northern Ireland are all independent internally but not internationally that power comes from central government in London !!
Great w.c.top players. Brasil team amazing.just couldn't defend..poland.boniek.germany rummenigge .Italy rossi.france.platinigreat games and goals Northern Ireland played out of their skins Gerry Armstrong spirit of 82..great times great music 💙1982
@@Ruda-n4h That's pure nonsense. Nobody was beating Italy after they beat Germany. Antognoni and Graziani weren't healthy for Italy so stop the excuses for Germany. Italy won and were the better team.
Rest in Peace dad. The last day i can honestly say i remember spending with you. 😢😢😢i still despise Italy and Paolo Rossi till this day for beating probably one of the greatest teams to never win a cup.
Only England could get knocked out of the World Cup despite being unbeaten. Typical of our luck in international tournaments. Plus that assault on Battiston by Schumacher was criminal. It wasn’t a foul it was GBH.
England went out of the 1982 finals because English attacks did not know how to penetrate a deep, well organised foreign defence with a good sweeper. If Ron Greenwood had had time, or perhaps insisted that England play his way (with Wilkins as a libero and balls played into feet) then England might have taken 3rd Place or have even won the World Cup. I say that with the benefit of hindsight because as it turned out there was very little to beat in Spain. All the major countries suffered with injuries or other problems and Brazil proved to have, not a team, but only a brilliant midfield. So, England at their best could have done it. But that would have meant playing Keegan and Brooking from the start in the vital game against Spain and there I believe Greenwood allowed himself to follow the old adage…. ‘never change a winning team.’ I don’t blame Greenwood for that - I blame others: those who I think persuaded him, and in my book, Ron went out a success, doing far better than anyone expected at the time.
BBC coverage would be improved by... let's say, 5,000% if they didn't obsessively comment on the England team and treated us to a holistic view of the competition. Other countries may become obsessive about their national team, but it'd be nice if Britain didn't. This approach makes the tournament still relevant, etc. even after (praise Dawkins!) the bloody English go out.
Talking to myself .. Me : Wait .... WHY did the BBC of all people choose to include a (SUPERB) Brazil goal from 1978 Argentina World Cup 3rd place match v. ITALY in the highlights of the 82 World Cup tho ?? Me : Oh shut up. Did you see what a (SUPERB) goal it was .... it should be included in EVERY World Cup's highlights so long they mention Brazil. Me : Yeah you're right. Me : Good. Now shut up and watch the rest of the damn video, will ya ??
@@Ruda-n4h Well not all are so clean like the Germans and the Austrians and thanks to their Honesty all last groups games are played at the same time since 82 or how can we forget the clean and correct German Keeper Schumacher or the clean and honest German Players Völler and Hölzenbein and the best and most successful Simulations with which Penalties Germany robbed the World Cups of 74 & 90.
Italy 1982 were half shit, 0.75 lucky. Betting Brazil was a huge surprize even for the italian themselves. Beating Argentina was normal (Belgium did too). Beating Ploand without their best player Boniek. Germany should've never been in the final. They were poor both technically and ethically. Plus if you chech out attendance numbers for most matches, you will be very shocked and disappointed
@@carnalea2424 The match between Italy and Brazil was voted higher by many football pundits including the BBC as one of the greatest match of the 20th century
@@thoskel1 I know it's all a matter of opinion, of course, but most (English) pundits still, I'm afraid, IMO have an anti-German bias and find it difficult to praise anything involving German teams.
A point of order: Nelinho's goal at 15:11 is from the 1978 World Cup. It's fascinating watching these programs about World Cups of long ago. Each competition from 1966 to 1986 has its own distinctly unique flavour. Something that is sadly absent from nearly all subsequent World Cups.
You obviously, deliberately stopped before 1990. Did you not think Italia 90 had its own unique style? I'm curious why you didnt include it. I watched the excellent part 2 of the Sky documentary on Italia 90 and somebody said it was "the last of the old world cups". I didn't know what he meant but im guessing he meant the same as you, despite the 4 year difference. I fell out of love with football during the 2010 World Cup. As a Coventry fan, i am no stranger to underachievement, disappointment and abject failure. So it wasn't because England played poorly. It wasn't Rooney's disgusting reaction at being ctiticised by the England fans (all of whom would have had to make sacrifices of one type or other, to be in South Africa) What made me turn away? During the tournament i realised that the vast majotity of the England players saw the tournament, as an inconvenience they had to tolerate, rather than a career highlight. I thought back to the likes of Stuart Pearce, Terry Butcher, Paul Gascoigne, Tony Adams, David Beckham even and it made me realise, it wasn't the same game. I stopped singing "player worship" songs, sticking only to club based songs. A year or so later, i stopped attending games after it dawned on me i was giving up my time and handing over £25 to be made miserable or furious. What happened to joy? I didn't watch England again until 2018 I would like to think the current squad WANT to be at the tournaments and Southgate has got them playing for each other as a unit rather than relying on one or two stars. Its ridiculous that we have a World Cup in December to distract me from moaning about Christmas. It just leaves me aghast that prior to the fortnight before the tournament began, nobody in the mainstream media or the world of football has stopped and said "Hang on.... It's WHERE?" I've said enough.
@@themanfromvolantis "Last of the Old World Cups" or beginning of the New World Cups? I thought 1990 marked the beginning of the new polished looking world cups. Even the commentator's line was as clear as if he were speaking to you in the same room. In terms of a spectator sport it was possibly the worst world cup in FIFA's history. Other than England v Cameroon, I can't remember a good game. The final was appalling. Incidentally, I'm in Ireland and it was our first ever World Cup; but the games we played were dire. The brand of football we played was dire. I guess it put the country on the map though. 1990 was the beginning of a terminal decline in World Cups. The standard was never achieved the heights that were reached in the 70s and early 80s. Just my opinion of course. There are 32 teams currently participating in the world cup, which is far too many IMO. I won't be watching it.
Claudio Gentile man-marked in World Cup 78 Six, Kempes, Hölzenbein, Krankl, Rep and Roberto. In WC 82 Boniek, Fischer, Zico, Maradona...None of them scored!
I mainly remember this tournament for Socrates, he was just a Rolls Royce of a player and years later I was fortunate eniugh to shake this legend's hand - on Portobello beach in my hometown of Edinburgh (he was promoting some footballing camp/academy !) of all places!. RIP - a true world-class player !
82 World Cup was just joyful and sexy, then the inevitable rot set in 1990 what a bore then became progressively negative then reached its absolute nadir in 2010 which was purely horrendous. Amen.
@@lewisgreen2957 yes Russia 2018 surprised me,a vast improvement on 2010 as 2022. I thought soccer was dead and buried in 2010 but the really iconic world cups were 1970,78 and 82 and 86.
82 and 86 were Memorable world cups ... completely agree about 1990 a negative... foul fest of a world cup ... 0 -0 galore ...nostalgia can blur the mind it certainly did with this one
I was 12 years old and my parents are Northern Irish.I remember their sheer joy when Gerry Armstrong scored the winner v Spain. Also watching the most gifted team of my lifetime Brazil.Happy days.
Looking at this again, credit to Gerry Armstrong. In an unfamiliar wide role he worked like a horse with no little skill and took players on and beat them for pace, scoring three goals.
This World Cup is one of the best ever; largely because there were so many memorable elements about it and there was so much to talk about. There were so many shock results, so much drama, a few really good matches and off-pitch drama (The Disgrace of Gijon). That WC had everything.
the UDSSR was cheated, the deserved two penaltys against Brasil, watch the full match, the same against Scotland!! Brasil was as good as many thinks they was
What a joke. Schumacker said he seen Batiston lying there and knew it was bad. So instead of helping and calling medical staff immediately you turn and walk away? When you look at this video you can clearly see he didn't even look at the ball and was focused on taking Bastiton out. He is no human
No. A misconception. England needed a 2-0 win against Spain. When the goal difference is the same, the team that scored the most goals should go in to the next round. In the first phase, both Italy and Cameroon had 3 points. Both had a goal difference of zero. But Italy went through. Why? Because Italy scored more goals (2, as opposed to Cameroon's 1). If England had won 1-0 against Spain, it would've had the same points as Germany (3 points), and the same goal difference (+1), but Germany would've gone through because of their higher scoring (2 goals, as opposed to 1).
Hermoso y raro mundial.
Mundial 82 without Poland. Only 5 second. Please remind Poland-Italy 0-0 in group match, Poland - Belgium 3-0. Belgium vice master of Euro 80. Poland - Italy 0-2 without Boniek, and Poland - France 3-2 . Finaly Poland 3rd place. Sorry for my english.
3rd place in 1974 as well. Poland had a good team between 1972 and 1982. They knocked us English out qualifying for 74 WC. They knocked Italy out in 74 as well in the WC. Might have been different for them if Boniek had played against Italy in 82. The 1982 WC was a decent competition.
Poland had an excellent Team and great Players such as Smuda, Buncol and of course Zibi Boniek...however Italy after having beaten Argentina and Brasil were unstoppable
You beat Argentina because they were distracted by the Falklands War. You beat a German team that had been defeated by Algeria and had to cheat with Austria in order to qualify for the second round. Against Brazil, you should never have won: Gentile tore up Zico's shirt inside the 18 yard box, which should've been a penalty for Brazil, , and there should've been a red card for Gentile. The third Italian goal should not have been anything, because the Brazilian goalkeeper's body was on the outside of play, but the ball was on the inside. It should never have been a corner.
@@Ruda-n4hNo one has ever won a World Cup like Italy won in 1982. With the help of the reff the Brazilians still lost. The real score against Brazil was Italy 4 Brazil 2. FORZA ITALIA!

Personally,my favourite and first World Cup and even though England got off to a flying start in the group stage and then faded badly,as an eight year old I didn't really give a shit because that tournament had absolutely everything but my top three highlights,Germany's keeper getting a massive dose of beautiful, beautiful Karma in the final,Brazil were like something from an alien footballing galaxy,I'd never seen football like it,they were majestic and the best thing?,Paulo Rossi, sublime! What a tournament,it was electric.(Apart from the infamous Germany-poland "game").
Surprised Alex Ferguson didn’t sign Schumacher as his goalkeeper at man u/fa,he is after all a typical man u/fa type of player, kick anything that moves,a complete thug.15>1 Amen.
Jerman telah dua kali juara piala dunia, lalu tiga kali final(82,86 dan 90 juara), sebelum 2014. Italy di turnamen ini telah ketiga kalinya juara dunia sebelum 2006.
England topped their group and were rewarded with Spain and West Germany in the next round. France finished second and got Austria and Northern Ireland...
What a shameful match happened in this world cup Germany had to fix match against Austria one goal each to qualify for next round on the expenses of my country Algeria which we beat them 2/1 first match, since then fifa changed the rules of the tournament, that final matches of the group has to be played on the same time
Excellent documentary, please upload the full version if you can, Brazil should have won that World Cup without a doubt, they delivered the most beautiful style of football as it should be...that Brazilian team was "the dream team"
the UDSSR was cheated, the deserved two penaltys against Brasil, watch the full match, the same against Scotland!! Brasil was as good as many thinks they was
Not a particularly great world cup but two of the best matches ever Brazil v Italy and West Germany v France and possibly the most attractive team of all time Brazil.
You have no idea what you are talking about. It is BY FAR the best world cup EVER. Five teams had the potentials to win the world cup: Brazil, Italy, Germany, France and Poland.
That is without doubt among the most ludicrous comments I have ever read. The 82 WC is the best I've ever seen, a thought echoed by many. What are you going to say? The 1938 tournament was better? 2010? You must have very high standards.
I agree with everyone here, 1982 one of the greatest world cups. Personally it would have been nice if either Brazil or France won it with their stylish foorball.
FOR ME BRUNI CONTI ITALY'S #16 WAS THE BEST But PAOLO ROSSI ITALY'S #20 GOTTED EVERY THING BEST PLAYER AND THE GOAL SCORER'S WITH 6 GOALS IN LAST 3 GAMES
My first WC though memories are vague now; I was 11 years old. Mostly I remember: Belgium beating Argentina Italy being awful in group stage England back in tournament football W. Germany v Austria (oh dear!) THAT BRAZIL TEAM Eder’s goal. Zico’s free kick. Northern Ireland beating Spain Maradona’s red card Gentile’s Terminator before Terminator was a thing Spanish fans jeering at England team bus, chanting “Ar-gen-tina!” “Ar-gen-tina!” No way in that dumb format were England going through after that. Harald Schumacher and the guy on the stretcher Boniek and Lato Rossi v Brazil All those perms And Marco Tardelliiiiiiii!!!
Your memory is playing tricks. Actually in reality a lot of square passing and boring football. As Jimmy Hill said if it hadn't been for France and Brazil we would have been pretty ashamed of it.
@@bebmeister656 One of the problems was that three of the best teams in the qualifiers, Yugoslavia, the U.S.S.R and West Germany, for a variety of reasons went off the boil and just didn't produce the goods eight months later.
Italy struggled in group badly but then found their feet. Won the world cup Rossi back to his best but then immediately after the world cup suffered badly losing at home to Switzerland and didnt win another game until October 1983!.
Not only that, they didn't qualify for Euro 1984, and by the time 1986 World Cup arrived, there was no Rossi age 29, no Tardelli age 31, no Anthonioni age 31, and many more. This Italian team only peaked for 4 games, and then vanished. As much as their rise and beating 3 former champions was spectacular, their fall after the win over W. Germany was equally spectacular.
@@hugodrax71 Exactly Italy started in 78 playing a fantastic offensive Football and German Players celebrated the draw against Italy as it was a victory. Italy hit the post 3 Times and against Brasil 4 times...Italy´s coach therefore adapted the strategy and Italy played much more determined in WC 82 and won like never seen before and after by beating all rivals in a row Argentina, Brazil and easily against Poland and Germany.
@@EVOZORE Hitting the post is just another chance that hasn't gone in. Italy were fortunate because as it turned out there was very little to beat in Spain. All the major countries suffered with injuries or other problems and Brazil proved to have, not a team, but only a brilliant midfield.

Italy came back from adversity in that WC. They didn’t start strong, but they gained strength match after match, and at the final in Madrid they played like champions.
