MATCHA LATTE made at home
Light, creamy and refreshing iced matcha latte made at home
My Guru Matcha queen Veronica hooked me on to this
She thought me how to make a
creamy and fluffy glass of homemade Matcha Latte!
It’s not only creamy, refreshing and tastes like no other drink.
Most people think you only do matcha latte when it’s hot. However, matcha is a versatile drink: you can drink it hot or cold.
I crave the iced version in the summer and usually after my workout
Matcha is a powerhouse of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals - hence why it's fast becoming one of the most popular health drinks in the world.
What is Matcha Powder?
Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that is mostly grown and produced in Japan.
The green tea plants used for matcha are shade-grown for three to four weeks before Harvest
During the last few weeks of their growth, the tea leaves are shaded from the sun to increase their chlorophyll content and produce the vibrant green color. The leaves are then ground to produce a fine powder which is used in recipes for making teas, lattes, smoothies, and even ice-cream.
MATCHA
Equipment
-Bamboo whisk
(this is what I use for zero matcha chunks!)
-Small Matcha Bowl stoneware ones like these are best
-Matcha scoop
-Fine Mesh Strainer for sifting out clumps)
Ingredients
-1 tsp Matcha green tea powder
-2 ounces (60ml) hot water, lesser then hot water
-1/4 chilled skimmed milk of
Choice , almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, dairy milk, etc
-1 tbsp Maple syrup, honey, or other sweetener, optional (depending on the sweetness you prefer)
-5 match ice cubes/just ice cubes
Instruction
-SIFT the matcha into a mug or
Small bowl to get rid of any lumps.
First, sift it into a small bowl or mug. Matcha clumps very easily, so I always recommend sifting it before you add any water. Otherwise, it will be difficult to get the tea to disperse evenly in the liquid, and your drink will be lumpy.
matcha powder. It clumps easily, and the clumps can be difficult to whisk away, so this step will help make your matcha latte smooth, creamy & lump-free.
WHISK
You might want a matcha whisk.
If you make matcha often, I recommend investing in a bamboo whisk called a chasen (pictured here).
Its special design breaks up clumps and creates a frothy layer of foam on top of the tea. If you don’t have one, use a regular whisk or an electric milk frother instead. Whisking or stirring with a fork or spoon will not work here
This isn’t the circular whisking required for making baking recipes or scrambled eggsI instead, whisk vigorously from side to side - either directly back and forth or in a zigzag or W or M motion pattern (30 seconds or so) - to evenly disperse the powder in the water and create a foamy layer on top. If you whisk in a circular motion, your tea won’t foam.
Whisk vigorously until the matcha green tea powder is fully dispersed.
SWEETNESS TO TASTE
Matcha’s grassy, umami flavor can be an acquired taste. If you’re new to making it, don’t hesitate to add a few drops of maple syrup or honey. You also might want to sweeten your tea if your matcha powder is particularly bitter.
Finally, top it off with chilled skimmed milk and chilled coconut milk . (Traditional matcha green tea is made with just green tea powder and water) but you can also easily make a latte by finishing your drink with steamed milk or chilled Milk, I love to make mine with Chilled almond milk or coconut milk
-Pour into a glass of Ice with chilled skimmed milk & coconut milk frothed matcha and enjoy!
Taste your latte and decide how much sweetener you want to add, if any or additional coconut milk,
Hmmm… it’s creamy and fluffy glass of homemade Matcha Latte!
it tastes better than any store-bought version because you can use the freshest ingredients to make it. Even better, you can experiment and customise it to your liking. Ultimately, you can make your very own version of the iconic Starbucks matcha latte.
(NOTE-
WHAT IS DIFFERENT BETWEEN MATCHA AND GREEN TEA??
Matcha and green tea both stem from the Camellia sinensis plant. Green tea tends to come either loose or bagged. Matcha is a fine powder of pulverized green tea leaves. Each form of tea may have its own benefits for the body, and some people may prefer the flavor or properties of one over the other
WHEN TO DRINK
Matcha green tea is best enjoyed before meals, but not after 2 p.m. or if you are sensitive to caffeine. If possible, try having Matcha in the morning or afternoon, but never late at night since it will affect your energy levels, mood, and sleep quality.)
