Another method that avoids the complicated fraction at the end: 5^(x+6)=6^(x+5) 6 (5^(x+6))=6^(x+6) Let's assume X = x+6, the equation becomes: 6 (5^X)=6^X Log 6 + X Log 5 = X Log 6 X =Log 6 / (Log 6 - Log 5) x = X - 6 = Log 6 / (Log 6 - Log 5) - 6

Before watching: There is no integer that satisfies for this, because there is no integer x such that 5^x will be anything but 5 to some power. However, using rational numbers, we can get this. Start off taking log_5 of both sides. -> x+6 = (x+5)log_5(6). = (log_5(6))x + 5log_5(6). Move all the Xs to the right and the constants to the left... ->6-5log_5(6) = (log_5(6)-1) x X = (6-(5log_5(6)))/(log_5(6)-1). Most teachers will let you leave it in this form, or will let you use a calculator or log table. However, if you are faced with a multiple choice problem... Log_5(6) is going to be slightly more than 1 (since log_5(5)=1, and *much* less than 2 (log_5(25)=2. Bearing this in mind, 6-5log_5(6) is going to be a number between 0 and 1. Since we know the curve of a logarithm has a much steeper slope the closer to 0 you get, the difference 5log_5(6) and 5 should be surprisingly steep; we can assume (if we don't have a calculator!) that log_5(6) is something g like 1.1, maybe 1.15. This gives us a 6-5log_5(6) somewhere between 0.25 and 0.5. Log_5(6)-1 should also be a number between 0 and 1, but a much smaller number than 6-5log_5(6). If we take our 1.1 to 1.15 from above, then log_5(6)-1 is between 0.1 and 0.15. This means that (6-5log_5(6))/(log_5(6)-1) will be somewhere between 1.67 and 5. This ought to let you rule out most options on the test. With the use of a calculator and/or log tables (and possibly change of base formula), you should come to approx. 3.82746912.

Assume 5^(x + 6) = 6^(x + 5). Thus, x * log(5) + 6 * log(5) = x * log(6) + 5 * log(6). Then, the equation can be rearranged as follows to solve for x: (1) x * log(5) + 6 * log(5) = x * log(6) + 5 * log(6) (2) x * log(5) - x * log(6) = 5 * log(6) - 6 * log(5) (3) x * (log(5) - log(6)) = 5 * log(6) - 6 * log(5) (4) x = (5 * log(6) - 6 * log(5))/(log(5) - log(6)) Then, simplify: (1) x = log(6^5/5^6)/log(5/6) (2) x = log(base 5/6)(7776/15625) Thus, x is approximately 3.82747

I feel like I have a much simpler way. The bases can be made the same since 5 = 6^(log(6)^(5)) where the log is the power that 6 has to be raised to for it to be 5. Then the problem becomes 6^((log(6)^(5)) * (x+6)) = 6^(x+5) and since the bases are the same (log(6)^(5)) * (x+6) = x+5. Then evaluating the log it becomes .89824(x+6) = x+5 and using algebra the answer x=3.827 is found.

He divided. I’m not sure which concept is confusing you, so I’ll explain all of it. Both sides are technically still one term or a “monomial”, because there’s no addition or subtraction symbol. He did something like this: (2 • 3) / 2 which will simply to (1 • 3) / 1 or simply 6/2 or 3/1 Both gives you the answer 3. It’s different from if the multiplication sign were addition signs or subtraction signs (2 + 3) / 2 becomes 1 + (3/2) Now, combined that with the rule that when you do something on one side of the equal symbol, you have to do it to the other side. Last, when you divide a number with itself, it becomes equal to 1. Anything multiplied by 1 is itself. So, by dividing “6^x” with itself, it becomes 1. Dividing “5^6” with itself becomes 1. (5^x) / (6^x) = (6^5) / (5^6) is left over because the “1”s aren’t necessary.
