In this episode of Mathew Jonson’s Synthesizer Favourites for Telekom Electronic Beats TV, the renowned synth lover presents the Roland SH-5, explaining in vivid detail why he’s so fond of this classic monophonic machine. Manufactured from 1976 to 1981, the SH-5’s flexibility makes it a perfect tool for electronic music. Now an extremely rare find (with prices to match), the SH-5 is considered one of the best analogue synthesizers ever built by astute gear heads.

Always enjoy Mathew's demos. Just very natural and informative. Don't own an SH-5 but have recorded with one and it was a lot of fun.

... actually by coincidence got to borrow an SH-5 a few days after this comment. Tried out Matt's LFO 2 trigger trick. :)

Hell yeah, I keep coming back to this demo to listen to that sweet sequence morphing through all those amazing sound variations. I want a whole song based on this sequence!

I guess it's kind of off topic but do anyone know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?

This. So many channels, if they program anything they just program in like, a major scale or something. Which is so unhelpful.

This is definitely one of the better quality introductions of the SH-05, very informative and with very good sound examples, good work.

The early Roland’s are killer percussion sequence machines: Random S&H LFO noise source with their ultra tight and fast envelopes....f’ing heaven.

Lovely to see & hear you work the SH5 to bring out its best, Mathew! I had 3 of these back when they were around ('77 to 82-ish): two were linked together to make a single monster and they were really something. The only thing that I was disappointed in was the oscillators: they were rather invertebrate, particularly at the bass end. The minimoog proved it. But the pulse width, ring mod and all the switchable combinations of the SH5 were incomparable. Thank you for showing it off!

Definitely has that sound, can't say I'm a fan, for some reason never liked Roland mono synths from the 1970's but loved the juno 6 and their other 1980's polys though.

they are so good bro...the system is a lot fatter like huge walls of sound, the SH5 is a bit more of a strange more bizzare array of sounds, I play my buddies system so understand the diffs as I have an SH5

this is a good question. probably lots of us are real cork-sniffing synth addicts, coming here with a love of related synths like system 100m. for us, this is like riding as passenger in a car on a race track with a race car driver next to us.

Always a big show with high price instruments . if you are good you make music with a playtoy casio . all the rest is snobish
@wellurban

Sure, you could snarkily dismiss it out of hand...or you could pay attention to this thorough exploration of a synth with a unique architecture and learn sound design techniques you could creatively apply to more affordable instruments.
