Roland System 500 versus vintage System 100m and SH-5 Synthesizers

I’ve been leant a Roland System 500 for a video and so the first thing I wanted to try with it was a side-by-side with the System 100m (1978) and SH-5 (1976) as these are two of the heritage synths that inspired it.
The third synth it’s based on is the System 700, but I’m sure you can forgive me for not getting that one in there too!
All-in-all I think the System 500 is excellent, has the Roland family sound and stands up well against the classics that inspired it. Trying to be as impartial as possible, there are a couple of comments I had about it that could be improved which I also mention, but I genuinely think it’s a great sounding and accessible modular synth.
Let me know what you think about it.

Nicely done Alex. Enjoyed the sound of these synths very much and a rare example of someone making actual music with modular equipment on RU-vid! Hopefully it catches on. Giving you the System 500 to keep is the least Roland should do after your documentary...

Alex, excellent videos! I need more Roland sounds in my life!! The 100m and the 700 are like to die for! I’d take them over moog modular sounds, but there aren’t enough vids on RU-vid of people playing these amazing synths! I almost collapsed whe I heard the system 700 in the Roland history vid that you did. Please do more like that! System 500 sounds beautiful as well! Keep it up!!!

Thanks. Yes, the System 100m in particular is an overlooked gem. Well, less overlooked nowadays as the prices show, but considering how amazing it is, it doesn't have the limelight I think it deserves. System 500 is a great alternative and very compact.

Not as instant as a pre-wired synth, but then you can make so many different signal paths that aren't possible on non-modular synths. But then these are still just classic subtractive synths. Most modern Eurorack setups I've seen have all manner of weird and wonderful combinations of FM, granular, wavetable, sampling etc. So gets massive.

It's always refreshing when someone works with the gear and does something solid with it, before commenting on the pros & cons of it. You got it spot on, and whilst I've not yet owned any system 500, I've owned and used a multiple cabinet system 100m set up in the past, and can always remember thinking it sounded slightly thin, compared to an sh5 and even the brilliantly chunky (and beefy sounding) roland system 100, which i still have as a complete set. The eurorack format is fantastic for versatility , fun and powerful sound shaping, but if you've had the joy of using ye olde large format (e.g. moog modular, the system 700 et al) or even the mid size format such as the system 100m , then it can be a little bit finicky at times; especially if you have larger hands. Thank you for uploading this, it was great fun 👍
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 5 лет назад
Thanks very much. Glad it came across that way. The System 100 is one I've photographed but not actually played, so hoping to do that at some point. It looks like a lot of fun. I've recorded with a System 700 and that was a monster but also had that slightly slower envelope thing that the SH-5 has. A small complaint of course! And yes, I totally get why Eurorack is on that scale, but it's a different experience to that end.
@SRDhain
@SRDhain 5 лет назад
@@AlexBallMusic The system 700 is big in every way. I had two chances to buy one many years ago, but turned them down & bought more 100m, an oberheim OB8 (with the silkscreen for page 2 functions) , and some other analog gear with the money. Modular synths require a large investment of time to get the best out of them. If speed is of the essence (such as time/cost reasons, which is third party studio work, for example), then an analog synth with memories wins hands down. All in all, everything is thankfully more affordable now, so you can mix & match, with a tremendous amount of flexibility. For example, ten years ago, you couldnt have plugged a eurorack module or two into a polysynth, for added soundcaping & depth, with ease. Now you can. Those were the times, but these are the days. 😉

Having owned a system 100 in the late 70s and still owning an SH-2 and SH-5, I have to admit that their 'children' I bought much later (Gaia and System 500 plus a System 1m you totally could have added to the mix) are amazingly similar in character and ergonomy to their ancestors: the Roland sound is there, as the so typical very 'snappy' EG and BP filter . Plus one of Roland all-time high ground: a very clever and rich way of mixing and routing the signal path. Like you, I love those beasts!

Damn! Those three play so well together! I sort of wish that instead of going Eurorack with only but a few of their newer products, that they maybe could have done something like their system 100m, and just came either back with that format, or something similar, just newer and with something like class compliant USB and Ableton connectivity (like they did with the TR8 and MX1). If they only released their whole boutique range as semi-modular with patch points and CVs?! I wouldn’t own any Eurorack stuff, and I would own a whole mess of boutiques! Thanks for sharing, you are pretty creative and talented!
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 5 лет назад
A System 100m reissue with updates would be great, but I totally understand why they did modern Eurorack and also the System-1m plug out modular. Would love to try multiple System 100m cases together at some point so that a whole piece could be done without multitracking. Boutiques - yes, modular patching on those would have been cool. Guess they're aimed at bringing in people who are new to synths, so they kept them simple.

I hear you. I love firing up a poly synth and playing chords and I love firing up a modular mono synth and dialing in sounds from scratch and building something. Very, very different approaches and I'm not surprised some gravitate to one and aren't into the other! Funny, I know several people who can't stand polysynths and work exclusively on monos and modular. Also know a lot of folk who think modular is total madness.
@EspenKraft

@@AlexBallMusic Exactly. Modular synths has never appealed to me, probably because I've always been a chords man and composer before anything. Messing around with patch cables, meticulously building a patch from scratch was never my thing. Not that there's anything wrong with that! I sold my MS20 just for that reason. I have nothing against mono synths though, I just sample them and use the sounds polyphonically.. ;-) It's a good we're all different though as this makes music so wonderful, we all bring something different to the table! :)

Its fun for me to sometimes see videos where the boring and technical aspects are laid out so I gain a clearer understanding of synthesis, but at the end of the day, when I am composing music, I am never caring about what a synth can do, I am just creating sounds and letting them inspire me to write music. I've always tried to mix it up with performances, tutorials, documentaries. My channel is a mix of all sorts of things if you browse back. If I do the same thing every time it gets boring for viewers (and me). Only thing I'm disappointed about is "My utterly spiffing guide to light music" that took a huge effort and didn't get much interest.

Cheers Alex, great video. Roland should absolutely leave the system 500 with you. :) Agree about the size/throw comment, put me off the boutique SE-02, though the price has come down......hmmm. Have you tried one? The presets, sequencer and portability give it a utility which is quite appealing out of the studio. #tempted #abitbroke
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 5 лет назад
I would happily keep the demo 500, but imagine there's the next person lined up to borrow it. SE-02 - really loved that when I tried it, but it is very small which takes some getting used to.

how are you so good with only 31k subs? I save your videos to use for inspiration. I like your playing. I wish you would create an actual track out of some of the stuff you were playing around with here. Also.. did you have anything detuned? The tones you are making are in between the tones on my set up...like, if you play what looks like a c... and then I play a c, my c is flatter , but my c sharp is too sharp...hmm

SH-5 is a corker, yep. Didn't find the System-500 flimsy anymore than the System-100m sliders are, but it's certainly a lot smaller and took some adjustment to get used to. But then that's Eurorack in general.

alex, did you find that the scaling when you switched between octaves is off? i've noticed that on my (much loved) sys 500, and i've read on the MW forum that others have as well. i've read that roland will readily calibrate the oscillators if you send them the module--as i gather it's not obvious how to do it on one's own--but that's a bit of a pain and it's not like i'm constantly switching between octaves on the fly. so i can get by.
@AlexBallMusic
@AlexBallMusic 5 лет назад
The scaling on mine seems fine. It bleeps on an octave change but the the pitching all seems in tune when changing octaves and tracking volts per octave.
@RogerPenrose

@@AlexBallMusic ah yes, the bleep. it was intentional, it seems. how odd. still, such a beautiful and lovely system.
