Learn how to create beautiful Matisse style prints with this step-by-step guide and materials list: www.dickblick.com/lesson-plan...
Henri Matisse survived cancer to find a renewed energy and expressionism in artworks he called “scissor paintings.” Inspired by his cut-paper shapes, students can use sunlight or an artificial source to create color-saturated prints on fabric or paper.

Love this, I can't wait to try it.

I tried this ahead of time - ordered the supplies, but couldn't wait to try it so I used what I had - and in the sunlight the black construction paper dried first even though I sprayed the cutouts with water and made sure they were on the damp watercolor fabric. They dried and there was no absorption of the watercolors underneath. (Used Dr. Ph. Martin's concentrated watercolors.) Did I make a mistake moistening the underneath of the construction paper?

Jeanne Levy We are sorry to hear that you had some difficulties with the project. There could have been a number of reasons why you didn’t get the desired results. Make sure that the cutouts get wet, thoroughly wet. It sounds like yours may have dried too quickly. The other thing is that the watercolor must remain wet while placing the paper cutouts down. You might try muslin or watercolor paper with a lesser amount of sizing. While the sizing holds the paper together, it also holds the color in place. Try a student grade watercolor paper or soak the watercolor paper (instead of just brushing water on the surface) prior to applying the paint and cutouts. For any additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

Blick Art Materials thanks. This did end up working. The Blick construction paper might have been better, but I also dipped the pieces in water to make sure they were very wet and touched them all around to be sure they made contact. The kids were pleased with the project.

This is really cool! I was wondering if it's possible to do on a canvas bag and use it. If they get wet, would the print be ruined?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 8 лет назад
+Shina Sureki Unfortunately, the Blick Watercolors will run if they get wet or wash out if you needed to launder the bag. The same process can be done with the Pebeo Setacolor Paints. Once it has dried completely, heat set the painting with your home iron. If you have additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

Love this and want to try it! I don't have liquid watercolours but have watercolours in tubes...could I water them down and use them in a similar way? Thanks. 😊
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 7 лет назад
+Debs McLaughlin Unfortunately you won’t get the same effect with traditional tube watercolors. It really needs to be a dye based paint - which is why the Liquid Watercolor works so well. Fabric dye, food coloring, and some fabric paints could be used instead of the Liquid Watercolor. For any additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

Great video! I am eager to try. I do have a question, since you are using liquid watercolor the piece afterwards would then be for display purposes only because if you wash the material the paint would wash out correct?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 9 лет назад
Sarah Ba Yes, if you use the Blick Liquid Watercolor, it cannot be washed. However, if you would like to use this method with t-shirts or fabric that you would wash, we recommend the Pebeo Setacolor, available on our website at dickclibk.com. Use the same process with the Setacolor that is shown with the Blick Liquid Watercolors. For any additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing. I do silk painting. could I use silk paints for this procedure?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 7 лет назад
+Patricia Mackenziie The sun printing technique will generally work with any very fluid paint. We have heard customers havesuccess using the Pebeo Seta Color with this technique. While we haven’t tried it with silk dyes, it is very possible that it will work.

Thank you. Its beautiful. Do you think we can use any waterproof paper if we dont have construction paper. I live in India. Thanks :-)
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 9 лет назад
Blanca Dean Waterproof paper will not work properly. You need to use an absorbent, dark colored paper for best results. It has to be absorbent so that those areas remain wet longer than the background or uncovered areas. The dark paper repels light, thus slowing the drying time more. You might be a able to use a thicker, white paper if you cannot find dark colored paper. Can you do this same process with watered down acrylics or is it necessary to use watercolor?
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 8 лет назад
+Mickey K Acrylics are too thick, even in their watered down version, to flow and move like the watercolor does. We have found that these prints work best with dye based watercolors or inks. For any additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!

Are the shapes cut from black construction paper? Do these have to dry in sunlight? Thanks
@Blick_Art
@Blick_Art 7 лет назад
+Patricia Schwab Black paper works best as it slows the absorbs the light and keeps the paint below wet longer - allowing itto lighten. If you can’t find black paper, darker paper (blue, brown, etc) will also work and if necessary a thicker white paper will work too. If you have additional questions, you can reach Blick Product Information at 1-800-933-2542 or info@dickblick.com. Thanks!
