Great tune by the swedish fusion band. This is from the "trum" TV-show, with Morgan Ågren on the drums, Mats Öberg on keyboards(standing up), Jimmy Ågren on guitar, Tommy Tordsson on bass, and Robert Elovsson on keyboards(sitting down).
Most of us know Morgan Ågren is amazing, but the bass player really sticks the landing on his timing on this piece, which seems very challenging. It's extremely tight with some very unusual meters.
My oldest son is 14 at the time of this post. When he was in diapers, I had him sit in my lap watching this. And today, he can thump a 7-string with the best of ‘em. This music undoubtedly helped. I saw Morgan perform in Houston with Devin Townsend right at the cusp of the pandemic. Regardless how well he fit to DT’s music, I thought constantly of this music. Couldn’t believe he was only 30 feet away. Absolute legends M&M are, and even more so in ‘21.
Mats/Morgan Band is a band that features Morgan Ågren and Mats Öberg. Morgan is a drummer and composer and Mats is a keyboard player and composer. The band is a showcase for their virtuosic skills on their respective instruments as well as their compositional skills. Their music is difficult to categorize, containing elements of jazz, electronic music, waltz, dance music, avant garde/free jazz, techno, rock, progressive and modern classical music.
Always wondered what George Duke & Bill Bruford would have sounded like together. Now I know! Brilliant! Just a shame that Alan Holdsworth wasn't able to show,he would have ridden those grooves like the silver surfer.
See that "UR" sign in the upper right corner? It stands for Utbildningsradion or in separate language "Educationalradio", and they do not only radio but also TV. Those were the days. And now, for something completely different: The Larch, The Larch.
if without movie, we might treat this as all sequenced... . all players are great! i play some instruments, i know the difficulty of letting bass output stable sound, this guy does it in such enigmatic high speed manual chip tune! great stable picking!
The most funky and absurd groove ever, huh? You can count this in 21, subdivided in cycles of 10 and 11. Morgan actually wrote this out in 4/4 though.. 10 bars of four with one bar of 2/4 to even it out.. Very nutritious.
I tried dancing to various beats of this track. As a result, I've been in intensive care for the past 6 months to repair a broken pelvis and arthritic air-drumming fingers. (kidding)
People who like this are good people - end of story. Hopefully, everyone who's watched like recognizes Jimmy Agren on guitar. The two brothers have made music together for longer than Mats Morgan. Jimmy's pretty damned amazing too, something this clip doesn't make very obvious. Check out his new song "Happiness Is A Walrus"
To those that talk about these guys counting. Morgan, the drummer, is not big on counting per his own words. I won't put any more words in his mouth than that. I can't speak for Mats, Jimmy or Tommy as I've never heard the question asked of them, but Morgan plays by memory and his own feel. At least that's the impression I get since he doesn't count.
What a nice comment :P There are types of musicians, you have performers, songwriters and both. Performers are people like Steve Vai and these people. Then you have the songwriters, people like Paul Mccartney, John Lennon and Brian Wilson. Then you have both, which is very rare. People who can both write brilliant stuff AND perform it as well. Point is, Mats & Morgan band are supermusicians, but they don't appeal to people who are not like them. Hence, most people can't understand what going on.
