Three answers (not from the performer on the video!): 1) little iron bullets are inside the drum; if you hold the ocean drum horizontal and tilt it just a little bit, you hear "the ocean". 2) The ocean drum is closed on both sides (sometimes with a transparant skin. 3) You can make the tchitchi sound by bumping your leg up and down; I think it's easier to hit the rim with your hand or even with your fist while playing.

it looks like he cut the back of the drumhead about 3/4s off You can here a single shot hit the ground at the end of the piece. not easy to move ....but you can swap in rice, peas or whatever for shot.
PS, where might one find your more drum-centered, Middle Eastern-style drumming like this? (Including this marvelous piece?) This makes me want to dance and sing and cry out in happiness, and I'd love to add it to my music library. ^_^ Thanks! :)

Three questions: 1) what is inside the drum that makes that "Tchi-Tchi-TchiTchi-Tchi" sound? 2) how does it stay open on the backside for sound to reverb out, but still keep the beads or whatever from #1 enclosed? 3) How are you making that Tchi-Tchi sound? Is it done with the hands, or with a quick bump-up in the leg? I've never seen a drum like this before!
ROCKIN!!! Mat, how is your drum modified? I just got an ocean drum, 12: unfortunately, but I can figure out how to bounce the shot while playing the drum, and not have the shot hit one of the skins! :-) You rock!!
