Summed him up perfectly there. People go on about his lack of ambition, I love how he stayed at Southampton his whole career. They were good to him and he respected that and in turn the fans got their moneys worth. Low key player/person who always had a cult following, world class on his day imo. I always looked forward to the Southampton games in the 90s just cos he would be playing. Same with shef wed and chrissy waddle. Both players could have a quiet game and then do something that would totally blow your mind and completely turn the game.

Yes, and Hoddle of all people didn't pick him for the world cup squad, after LeTissier scored a hat-tick in the England B team that was known to have been LeTissier's last chance to show what he can do. I will never forgive Hoddle for that bollx

The greatest British player ever, in my opinion. A humble and loyal man. He could have earned far more money and caps - but he was one of the few who stayed true to a small club. He shows his wisdom and class as a human being even more now by passionately defending truth, democracy, real science, honesty and people’s free will and health against evil oligarchic totalitarian forces. He is, thereby, far far greater than England’s finest ever footballer! More than just a legend -a true hero. Dear Matt - thank you for everything - and God bless you!

The only reason Matt isn't mentioned in the same breath as the other greatest footballers of all time is that he played for Southampton and not one of the " big " clubs. I am a Newcastle United supporter but I am a lover of great football and I always applaud truly great players who had insane skills and used them to entertain ( as well as get results for their teams ) For me, Matt rates as highly as any player who has ever graced the beautiful game. If Matt had been born in Brazil we'd be talking about him in the same league as Pele and the fat druggie from Argentina. I watched football for over 60 years, even played a bit, I saw George Best, Law, Charlton live on those weekends when my beloved Bury FC (RIP) were away. When keepers saw Matt 40 yards out with defenders floundering in his wake...they must have known they would be picking the ball out of the net

The only two English players who ever excited me for their flair and technique were Gazza and Le Tiss. It feels a little tragic that Matt was not valued more. I feel like in England anyone who demonstrated skill over physique and "graft" was immediately written off as lazy and not a team player. Think how many times over the years England desperately needed a moment of inspiration in an important match, and imagine having Matt on the bench. Even if he didn't start, he would have been my first name on the squad for any tournament.

And wasn't it poetic justice that the finest player to play at the Dell scored the last goal at the Dell. But the thing that gets on my nerves is that Matthew Le Tissier only got 8 CAPS for England. One of the best ever players to grace the Premiere League only got 8 CAPS for England. Yes I understand that if he had moved to another club he might have won more caps. But you cannot force a player to move if he doesn't want to. And if he had got more caps England would have won more World Cups and European Championships if he was given more caps.
