Bowling was in my blood. Both my mother and father were on Bowling for Dollars, and my mother was on Beat the Champ (she beat him). I was bowling before I could walk.
The Claster Bowling for dollars franchise was so well watched. They also franchised Romper Room to stations all over the country. I watched on KTVI 2. And later on KDNL 30, out of St. Louis.
I love the Jackpot sign. You know there is someone back there flipping it on and off to make it "blink." So low tech. I love it. I actually listened to Bowling for Dollars on AM radio as a kid in the 70s.
my grandfather was on here when I was a baby. I was not in the audience, I was too little. But my older brother on got on tv. I'm trying to find the episode right now.
I understand..I was on Wonderama back in '76 ( a New York kid game show ) and youtube doesn't have the episode I was on. I'd wished I was abled to show my 2 sons and their children that I was competing for a 10 speed bike in a simon sez( Mr. simon Sez himself Allen Tresser) contest.. It came down to me and a girl out of 25 kids and I had lost. I had called NBC studios at 30 Rock and the tapes were destroyed..
john1965 Hey John i remeber Wonder Rama it was on in ny on Sat. morning, They used to also have dance contest/ for a ross bike/ with cool prizes in the basket! I was about 10 or 11yrs old, Those were the good old days! The host was Bob Mc callester.Hey John, Do you remeber Bozo the clown show? Now im really going back! lol
+dratalsky Just curious, how did you happen to get a hold of this? I'm surprised it wasn't erased and used again, which is what stations used to do to save costs. From what I've read, video tape was expensive back then, and that's why the shows weren't put on a shelf for future viewing.
That's awesome that you have this. I was in the audience when my uncle was on in the late 70s. I remember hearing my 4 year old self yelling "gutter ball" when another bowler's ball looked like it was going in, while watching the episode on TV. Family members have tried contacting the station (WWOR in NY) about getting a copy, but they said they were all gone.
Odd Thomas -- Thanks OT. Everyone loved my father. He was a very generous guy who gave everyone anything they wanted but never spent a dime on himself. That's where he found his happiness.
I was on bowling for dollars in ny. I think it was about 71 or 72 on WORTV9 I remeber seeing Romp a Room ans the Joe Franklyn studiio, My uncle Ronald (Ronnie ) Herbst was a contestant and my cousins and i and my aunt Madeline Herbst was his guest and he introduced us! It was fun! my 1st and last apperance on TV lol Ive been looking for it for a while, cant find it.
DaveConleyPortfolio - This was literally the very first show after Bob Allison left. It was the new host’s first time hosting, which was why he was so awkward. It was also on the my first day in 4th grade, which I missed in order to be on TV. Not too shabby of an excuse, if I must say so myself. 😉
J & H Productions International - LOL!! You nailed it. We Michiganders always add an “s” to the end of businesses. I never even thought anything about it until someone in college pointed it out to me. I never realized that most of the rest of the country calls soft drinks “soda” instead of “pop”.
@@dratalsky yes the original arena was destroyed, but they rebuilt the arena elevating it up from the original floor. Now there is a basement and you can walk underneath the lanes. I used to work there as a mechanic in the late 90’s.
Still the best. Because after you ride it you can get back on it almost immediately because there’s never any wait anymore. We actually got stuck at the very top of the first climb one time and had to walk down. Scary stuff. One woman had a panic attack and had to be taken to the hospital.
@@dratalsky I don't think so, but it brings back great memories of my 1970's and early 1980's bowling. Great spare ball, and if you get lucky here on RU-vid...you'll find a clip or two of a pro using it as a strike ball and hooking the hell out of it!! (Jeff Mattingly, Marshall Holman)
+DLCOrganization -- Well, I was about 9 years old when this was recorded by my family on their very ancient VHS machine, so I didn't really have much of a choice in deciding if the credits were recorded or not.
@@dratalsky My daddy did Bowling for dollars and my mommy, sister, me, my girl friend Carol and friend Paul went. My daddy went Brooklyn, left the 6 pin and then missed it to the right.
Bob Allison was head of the Perogi gang here in Detroit. Tough group. No one, and I mean no one, gets away with winning $10 on Bowling for Dollars and doesn't pay the price later.
If anyone won that furniture ensemble, I hope they also won enough prize money to have a hauled away. Yuck! Elvis wouldn’t even have put that crap in the jungle room.
ItsFrankieBoy - This was his very first time hosting Bowling for Dollars. He was replacing long-time host Bob Allison. I can’t tell you if he got any better as time went on, but yeah, he was pretty bad. I was more upset with the damned cameraman, who kept cutting me out of shots of our family in the audience. I was an ugly child, but not THAT ugly.
