I had a cat who would’ve done the same and only when she’d had too much she might flip out. Otherwise she’d more likely defecate herself in fear right there on the table.
Honestly it looks like he figured out that she was helping him. Must've felt really good to get that matted fur off. It's only after she stopped shaving that he started struggling really.
it's funny how there are basically just 3 types of cats: 1. goes into shock or a disassociative state 2. constantly meows in protest while still resigned to their fate 3. woke up and chose violence. I've only had to bathe 1 cat in my life but unfortunately the same cat that fought off multiple generations of racoons and survived living her whole life surrounded by coyotes wasnt a push over. That bath was my Vietnam.
He was calm early on because he was so glad to get those mats out...can you imagine the relief he felt when there were no more patches pulling his skin anymore? I bet he's so happy now!
I don't think cats make a connection between getting groomed and feeling less itchy later. I know my own cats are never appreciative of how many hairballs regular brushing prevents.
I'm just amazed that a cat that's never been groomed before would sit so still with that loud buzzing thing near him. Even with a happy hoodie, that's amazing
I started combing my ragdoll as soon as I adopted her because I didn't want her to ever have to suffer through mats and wanted her to grow up loving being groomed. Now I'm confident that she'll be nice and calm with groomers because she looooooves the attention and doesn't care who's wielding the comb or claw clippers.
It also really helps as they get older. I have two 14 yo with long fur and they aren't quite able to groom themselves like they used to. I didn't get them used to combs or brushes when they were young, so trying to brush them has been a bit difficult. I have been able to do it a little at a time but I feel dumb for not preparing them sooner.
@@user-uz2vc1gc6vI'm not sure about that. Cats claws will continue to grow even on a scratching post, and curl around into their paw. I have seen this. Even my Henry's Claws.. they grow longer and longer even with a scratching post. And they can curl around into their paw.
This wonderful little guy was very well behaved. The only time he showed any annoyance was when we chuckled at him in the happy hoodie. They can sense that over the cam.
Loved the bit where you checked the blades for temperature. You treat the cats better than my previous hair stylist treated me! Maybe I should switch from “ow that’s hot” to hissing and yowling!
I was wondering how the happy hoodie worked for cats, then I remembered that their whiskers would act as spatial gauges that helped the cat determine the kind of spaces they had to manoeuvre. So the happy hoodie probably lets them feel like their in a tight snug space, which comforts them. That's pretty cool!
I know you're the "Girl With the Dogs" but I love watching you with cats, you're very kind. You're smart, you treat them like cats. I hope that makes sense. It's a stressful situation for both you and the animal being groomed, but somehow it's calming to watch, despite the distressed meows, of course.
Lifetime cat owner here. I completely agree with this statement. Cats are always so underappreciated and it breaks my heart. You can tell she cares for them and shows just as much empathy and gentleness as she does dogs if not more so because of their naturally skittish behavior.
Makes total sense! As a cat person myself, I hate that cats are treated like less than simply because they're not blindly obedient like many dogs. You actually have to respect a cat for them to love you. Yes that's harder, but it's worth it 💙 I love dogs too, but cats are always #1
Oh it's so satisfying everytime. I love watching groomers remove matted fur on animals. It's super visually satisfying AND I know it's helping the animal
I am so surprised at how well he sat for being shaved for having never been professionally groomed previously and being matted too!!! Kudos to you, your cameraman, and the kitty for this video.
What an absolute sweetie. Despite being easily spooked, he is still so well-behaved. And that face of his is just too adorable; I could hug and pet him all day long.
A few years ago my collie picked up fleas and it wasn't until the other dog and both cats were infected that it was discovered. Most of the animals were pretty easy to treat but my poor long-haired senior cat had the worst time of it. She was 15 at the time and I eventually had to shave her down because of how they gathered near her stomach. It didn't matter how many baths I gave her, collars, drops, they were absolutely constant. Thankfully after the shaving they had no place to hide and she was finally allowed some peace.
I was in your shoes totally. My long haired dog brought them in the house and gave them to the indoor kitty. Kitty was easy to treat, but my poor dog had to be totally shaved. It didn't go well. UGH. We won in the end but it was tough!!
Try using Dawn dish liquid, gobs and gobs of it. Slather it right on there as thick as you can get it, right down to their skin. It's one of the first things I always do when I take in rescue kittens because they are usually still too small for any of the topical flea treatments. The cats hate it but the dying fleas hate it more. It suffocates them right out of existence.
I had a long hair cat that would get matted really bad on his belly every summer. He was an indoor/outdoor cat. My father would brush him out every night, but the belly hair would mat up so bad that we just couldn't get through it. So we shaved his belly. It was super cute cause the cat would lay on his back on my father's legs, and we would shave his belly very carefully with a mustache trimmer. He would just let us do it. And you never knew he was shaved unless he laid on his back to show you.
@@rebeccasilver2181 It worked rather well. It was a Whal mustache trimmer. Just took our time, and went in little sections. Made sure to clean out any large clumps. If you find yourself with a rather large mat that you need to remove. Just slowly shave at it, and try to pull gently at the hair so it doesn't wad up on the clipper.
@@thelilwhip1 I suppose the problem is that there really weren't any mats, just too much fluff, which caused a poop incident. The downy undercoat jammed the entire thing, and this trimmer can usually handle a very thick mustache.
Long ago I had a beloved kitty whose fur was so long around his bottom that he couldn't keep himself groomed and poo would actually get stuck in it. (Blech.) We got his bottom shaved at the vet's a couple of times, but that got expensive! Also repeated trauma for poor kitty, so we bought our own shaver. We would take him down and set him on top of the drier. BF (later hubby) would hold him and I would shave his whole bottom area. I swear my kitty, Lars, could read my mind, though! I would just have the thought, "Hmm, it's about time to shave Lars's bottom again," and he would look up very startled and run and hide under the bed!! 😂 Lars, 1978-1991. A very special cat (but then, they all are!) Still much loved.
Once he was comfortable, with no mats, his expression changed! From then to the end, it was “will this humiliation never end?” He endured like a champion, and I hope he will love you much more next time he sees you. 🇨🇦💕
Yes, you could see that one moment when she said something like, "we're almost done," and his body language changed somehow to, "I've really reached my limit with all this."
I love seeing you work with cats, and Lucien is such a good boy. One of my cats was also very matted - and fiercely resisted my attempts to shave them off - so when she went in for her dental cleaning and had to be anesthesized anyway, the vet techs gave her a lovely lion cut while she was out cold. Much easier!
@@saoirseahernegray908 I use kids scissors, the kind that are very small and much less sharp. Of course, that does mean they aren't super effective with really large matts, so I have to work on the matt over a few days.
@@ferretyluv They won't tolerate scissors, either - and I've heard taking mats off with a scissors isn't a good idea because you only get the top part.
Even with the matts, and even with the shave, he's a beauty, and what a good boy through all the indignity. He's going to look even more beautiful when his fur grows back
Been waiting for a full length cat groom! Wow he's so calm, I would expect any cat to run in a panic from the buzzing clippers, he's being really patient and I'm impressed
We had a cat growing up that used to matt like this boy. My Dad used to groom her with side cutters from his tool box. Cabbage was my Dad's baby and he was the only person she'd let groom her. He would have loved your chanel Vanessa!
I can imagine only how comforting the shave might be for the cat. He knows you are helping him. You are truly amazing and comforting for the animals in your care 🤗😻
Yup. Looks like it feels good, imagine how much more airflow he has and how she sometimes gives those cats a good scratch all over after the shave - Bet it feels like heaven
Dude imagine the relief of feeling his skin finally being relaxed, not pinchy, and exposed to fresh air again. Imagine how many places he can stratch now 😭
@@lexyshannon9428 there's a quote, I can never remember where it's from, that goes something like, "the best feeling in the world is when the pain finally stops." I think kitty was very happy to get rid of that matting.
He showed such resilience despite clearly being frightened. Maybe it's your tone, maybe your general calmness, but you have 'something' which seems to help nervous dogs and cats hold back the worst of their reactions. Brilliant short and long videos. Thank you.
Yes, you could see it in his face during the first minute or two of the video. He wasn't sure what that stranger was doing to his body, but he immediately realised it made him feel good.
Whenever I watch a cat being groomed I'm so tense, even my toes are curled up. I will wear a hoodie next time watching. Lucien was a darling and Vanessa worked fast and with such precision!
Such a well behaved moggie! Reminds me of my cat who passed 20 years ago. Woolley was just like Lucius, but completely black with golden eyes. I gave up trying to cut off her mats and about twice a year she went to the vet for a sleep and woke up with a mohawk. The vets don’t have your sense of style.
That's got to feel good on his skin, getting that heavy fur off, and clean. He really behaved well, even though he was nervous. Pets just want to be cared for.
Aw, I love that he's wearing a thunder jacket in the beginning! We have the same brand for my dog who's scared of loud noises, and it works really well tbh
Your heart goes out to this scared cat, never having experienced a grooming never mind a shaving. They are being so patient under a horrifying experience of being groomed. So much love goes out to this beautiful cat.
I am old 72, & not as fast as I use to be. When that kitty meowed my 3 month old came running to make sure she is still an only fur-baby since my 11 year old passed away 😭 almost 2 months ago. Once she was reassured😻, she laid down on the kitchen floor & stretched like crazy.
I had a cat who looked just like him for 18 years. His last six months was pretty bad because the vet shaved off his fur mats in an unpleasant way. His name was Sid. I still miss him. I hope this poor guy does better.
Oh, poor Sid 💔 i don't trust vets with grooming my cat either, for this exact reason. Most of them don't care for the animal's comfort. Much rather just do it myself, however difficult it may be.
Condolences. Sid was certainly a beautiful cat, and I'll bet he was the best boy. Eighteen years is a long life, and I'm sure the vast majority of it was very happy with you.
My heart! ❤ he is identical to my cat, Hank. He too gets shaved/bathed. Has the exact same fluffy fur and color/pattern. Hank was abused as a kitten, and nearly died. He’s not nearly as large as this kitty, but my heart melted when I saw him!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you are so BRAVE! And you do a GREAT job. Your calm attitude helped this cat to succumb to your ministrations. You're amazing!
My mom had a calico with long, very fine hair that would always mat. She really liked getting her annual lion cut for the summer, and especially loved the blow dry. After the cut she was always more affectionate and outgoing - it must have felt so good!
What a sweet Boi. He was pretty well behaved considering how much was involved in grooming him. He must feel so much better. I’m sure his Hoomans have an attractive sweater he can wear, while his fur grows back in. He’s a beauty. His little sideways glance at 10:31, as if to say “oh the indignity of it all”, was pathetically funny. It’s AMAZING what a difference the Happy Hood makes. Great Job.
I think he recognized that he was there to receive help for his uncomfortable conditions. While the process was likely strange and uncomfortable as well, i think he was more relieved to have his situation addressed and fixed than anything else.
He's such a good boi! It's too bad he has to lose all that insulation just as we're going into the cold months, but I bet he'll be so much more comfortable without all those mats. What a great cat! 😍
Such a good boy, trying so hard to not panic and murder the problem away. Also excellent work by both and the lovely cameraman, steady work and gentle voices.
That cat is very tolerant and patient!! Great video!! Those eyes are so souful and beautiful! He really does look like a miniature lion now!! #CALM #UNDERSTANDINGSOMEWHAT #GREATJOB
I really enjoy these long format videos as an addition to your other channel, sometimes I want the quick satisfaction and sometimes I want a thorough explanation. Now I can have both! :) keep up the amazing work!!
How do manage to maintain your manicure with all that you do? I see so much clever discipline and efficiency in the way you execute your work! It's also so moving to see how this cat seemed to enjoy his experience!
