Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty - A Gothic Romance

The story of Sleeping Beauty where upon Aurora sleeps for one hundred years and awakens in the modern world.
Choreographer Matthew Bourne's haunting scenario is a gothic tale for all ages. The traditional story of good vs evil and rebirth is turned upside down, creating a supernatural love story across decades that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder. Perrault's timeless fairy tale about a young girl cursed to sleep for one century has been turned into a supernatural tale of vampires, fairies and decadent gothic opulence. Yet in the end, young love finally triumphs over all as Aurora is rescued by her one true prince.
Bourne’s imagination thrives where others fail, and his reinventions - a puppet Aurora, battling suitors, and homages to Petipa - transform fairytale into spellbinding drama and ballet.

I watched this live last night and I have woken up today with some sort of enchantment surrounding me like an ethereal sparkly mist.. I will never be over the fairies' solos for baby aurora against the backdrop of a full moon... Magical is an understatement

Absolutely incredible! As an ex ballet dancer, I was worried about this new take on Petipa’s well loved timeless masterpiece but as usual Mr. Bourne has turned it into something exciting and truly exceptional. Thanks to whoever has uploaded it here. You have made my day!

This is my favorite show of all time! I have always had some issues with the classical sleeping beauty version. The story is moving too slowly, there is no real love story and sometimes the music felt too dark for what was happening on stage, for example the opening scene, Aurora's first variation and the polonaise in the last act. If you listen to some of this music without context, it really sounds gothic. Matthew Bourne has fixed all of this by introducing vampires and Carabosses son into the show, and now the story matches the music perfectly! The dance style I love the most is in between ballet and modern, and when I saw this as a twelve year old, something fell into place. This lyrical dance style here is absolutely my type of dancing, it tells a story with each step. There is no need for point shoes or ballet pantomime. Bravo to the cast they are amazing!

"...The dance style I love the most is in between ballet and modern..." That's how contemporary ballet is usually described, as a blend of ballet and modern. The torso & arms are often more like ballet - even when doing floor work - whereas the leg movements typically more align with the movements you'll find in modern dance. Random fact: Ballet originated as a form of sacred dance performed by Jesuit monks. It became a secular activity meant to be put on for entertainment due to France's kings bringing it to court. Edit: turned contemporary dance/ballet into just contemporary ballet
@elisedoijen4298

@@crackle6875 Thanks for the explanation! That's interesting I thought this dance style was called lyrical. Is there a difference? As a dancer I learned much about ballet and modern dance but not much about anything in between those styles. By the way I'm from the netherlands and I'm going to see the show tomorrow live in Amsterdam!! So excited!!!

I really did not expect to like this but was curious. I fell in love with Hannah Vassallo (Aurora) the minute she walked onstage and gradually got drawn in. I could have lived without the violent apotheosis, which hints at an extremely complex backstory between Carabosse's family and "Count Lilac"'s, and without the wholesale slaughter of Tchaikovsky's score, but the production is gorgeous and Bourne really cashes in on themes of sacred (or romantic) vs profane/possessive love. Aurora's first dance with Caradoc is combative and spiky, almost abusive, while her dance with "Leo" (whom Caradoc frames for Aurora's keeling over), danced to the Rose Adagio , moves organically and fluidly through the music. Truly effective was the scene (slight spoiler) where Caradoc is kissing the recumbent Aurora, trying to will true love's kiss into existence, then lets Leo kiss her only to have his goon squad drag him off once she awakens. ("See, *I* am your true love!"). I'll never prefer it to Petipa, but the company looks great, and it's a more fully realized plot than those of some of his other full-lengths. Thanks for posting!

This is on a different level, lyrical and folk dance, totally different interpretation. And yes die hard ballet fans will probably cry because Tchaikovsky's music begs for the dance to soar with it to the same level!!!

Bourne certainly transforms the 4th act from a stilted ceremony into a narratively exciting experience. Not entirely sure about the details...why exactly Carabose's minion turns on him, etc. But the overall effect definitely morphs formal ritual into actual theater. I still prefer Bourne's Swan Lake, but this one is definitely worth a watch. And such incandescent dancing talent!

Fabulous! Just stunning performance! It’s not for traditional ballet enthusiasts or those who are too “simple” to understand the relevant, deeper implications of the story line. This is not just a ballet. It is a display the ageless battle between the forces of good vs evil in a most contemporary context, in my opinion. Love the contemporary choreography to this classic ballet. Natural, funny, charming and believable. Bravo! This production will appeal to a broader audience, I believe…

I'm not sure I fully understand the story even after overnight reflection! I think it looses its way a little in the third act; I was out of breath after the first act, and wishing for some change of pace or quietness but these are minor quibbles. But, the dancing is spectacular, especially Christopher Marney as Count Lilac. Vassalo and Trenfield are great as Aurora and Leo. Importantly, Bourne shows that a 21st century, three-act narrative ballet is possible. Now all you need is David Hallberg to invite Matthew Bourne to stage it for the Australian Ballet!

I really liked this ballet. The choreography, scenery, costumes and make-up. They are very good dancers - although Hannah Vassallo is clearly not 18 years old - but no problem, I loved them. What I hated / unfortunately occurs in many ballet film adaptations / is the horrible camera treatment. This choreography was also made for the stage. The film director also wants to appear, so he forces himself into the product. Too many close-ups - it's as if only Monalisa's right ear and nose are exposed - clumsy cuts. I hate it when I see in an opera broadcast which of the singer's teeth is filled. But I really liked the ballet production . I like it , when they work seriously on a piece of art , BUT don't take themselves too seriously.

I really did enjoy the first part, however the sudden turn of omg we're vampires too because "edgy" and over the top on drama really put me off don't even get me started on the added sounds. I thought the gardener boy would die,from being deemed guilty of the sleep of the princess or having to wait forever and his love reincarnating over and over,but no it looks like a fanfic made by a 15yro after watching twilight the way it derails and doesn't care to explain makes it confusing at the very least and sloppy at the most,and the dream sequence which was the part I was most excited to see had not much "dream" to it, really? After making everything so dark one would expect a contrast and a Dahli kind of dream sequence Still thank you for sharing it culture should be available for everyone to enjoy and experience even if some like me didn't love it
