Yepp starvation mode is in the beginning..like hypermania..bc detox from junk food and and ...In the longrun it is like being anorexic..it will make you ill or kill you. Only my opinion.
Matthew is a beast in his profession, a cut above almost everyone in that business.. The Human body and Mind have the power to heal anything in this lifetime, yet most humans have 0 Self-Discipline.

That actually is what it is. I lost a bunch of weight intermittent fasting and he’s describing how it feels. Our ancestors were hunter gatherers, we didn’t get consistent meals and had to be on the lookout for the next animal to hunt etc.
I love these interviews Graham, you're by far the best show on RU-vid. Always have great guests and the way you bring questions to the table is at a high professional level. Alot of other channels and big corporate networks need to take notes. Thanks my man keep them coming.
Fascinating perspective from him. He's such a natural athlete he could take the dramatic weight loss and take the hit to his system. Not sure anyone could just so that.
i was overweight once upon a time, tried lots of diets, slimming pills and teas, none of them worked, fortunately someone actually recommended agoge diet to me, never been happy with my weight loss journey
I had a similar experience, my gym had this scale for one month before passing it on to the next gym that told you everything including body fat percentage.. I weighed in at over 190lbs on the first day and decided that I had put off getting shredded for long enough, it's something I had always wanted and now I had the motivation to do it. That day I cut out all artificial foods, sugars, drinks etc.. I ate two meals of chicken breast and vegetables, some grapes and a smoothie each day. I trained twice a day, including an intense fasted cardio session every morning. I stuck to this the whole month and went from 14 stone down to 10 stone (196 lbs to 140lbs) in one month.. I slept 2 hours a night if I was lucky, but never felt tired. I was more mentally alert than I ever had been in my life, and had intense feelings of sheer nirvana here and there.. It was an experience to say the least, and I got absolutely shredded and was easily at a single digit body fat percentage. Keeping in mind I had burned a ton of fat, but also muscle in the process. I wouldn't recommend it, and honestly it's not for everyone.. But I can relate to everything McConaughey is saying here.
@Zackaria Gudlè Honestly man, It’s very unhealthy to lose that amount of weight in such a short amount of time. I didn’t know what I was doing to myself. You’re already at a healthy weight, but if you do want to lose a few lbs then get in a healthy balanced diet of carbs, fat and protein, eat at around your maintenance level (not under) and get all your calories in within 4/5 meals.. This will keep your metabolism spiked, also drink a ton of water. Be healthy about it, don’t restrict yourself. Whole foods are the way to go
When I was anorexic, I thought my mental clarity was high. I think in actuality I was just being hyper focused on one topic with few other responsibilities
Having a clear goal with clear methods of achiving it helps, but its a gift from our cave men past mostly. You need to have a clear mind if you are starving coz confused hungry hunter is a dead hunter. Your body starts running on ketons, less inflamations, more grouth hormone in the system, reproductive system is slown/shut down, all the fat is burning, your blood vessels clearn, all the junk in the cells is used for fuel or repair, ect. Hunger is the default state in the nature. So we are pretty damn good adapted to it.
I totally relate to this! I was anorexic in my second last year of high school and my academic performance basically skyrocketed. Don’t get me wrong - the effects it had on pretty much everything else in my life was terrible, especially relationships. But yeah I felt really... balanced and hyper aware. Probably just running on adrenaline and cortisol though.
So true about how it’s hard to gain weight back the right way.. I used to be anorexic and tried really hard to “rebuild” myself in a healthy way through getting into fitness and eating very clean for a few years gently coming out of it. It’s tough but doable and now I can eat just as much as I used to before I was anorexic but it took time and I had to gain a lot of lean muscle and stay pretty fit. Luckily I think once you’ve been that disciplined before you don’t really lose it.. I feel really in control of my diet and general health so it’s easy to pull those reigns in, and you have so much knowledge about nutrition which makes it easy to make the right choices.
Phoenix is a great human being. Not totally sure how great Mathew is. He appears to be a puppet of that system that picks who they really want around, while rewarding them very well.

He’s a very intelligent man who does his research. Incredible commitment to getting information out to a sector of people who might not otherwise have knowledge or resources to it.
"Mental acuity was at an all time high for me." "I had such a boundless amount of mental energy... I didn't have leverage physically." "So the body... it was a lot more fragile... but, boy, the mental... every bit of power that I lost from the neck down sublimated to the neck up." Makes me think of all the descriptions of the classic gray alien: GIANT head, super frail body. Could just be the end result of long-term evolution on another planet where the humanoid species made a cultural decision to sacrifice physical prowess for that "mental acuity."
Wow, weirdly enough enough I was thinking of the same thing. I wonder if in the future we will discover that body mass has some impact on mental acuity.
When you don’t eat and fast this is what happens. The mind and your awareness and clarity is amazing. I fasted for 10 days once and was the best feeling ever. Many monks fast for even 10 months. The first 4 days of fasting is awful tho. Painful. You feel sick and flu symptoms and toxic. 😊
@@hawksm2783 it’s already known why, your body runs far more efficiently on keytones. He was basically on a ketosis diet, except he took it to an extreme by really cutting down on how much he ate.
@@Aricelable It is very important to approach it with caution and proper hydration/movement/rest. It also helps to make sure you don't have to take any I.D. pictures at the end of a 2 week fast if you want to avoid looking like you're auditioning for The Walking Dead. @@joyalways1179 i know a lot of ppl that have a hard time with even flower, wax, vapes. Its kinda like cigarettes. People get moody and irritated when they don't smoke their weed
He's right about some stuff but he doesn't explain it well. If you starve yourself for a while & then start eating properly again, your body will prioritize storing extra fat rather than optimizing muscle growth. Its because your body is accustomed to being underfed & extra fat is easier & better to transfer into energy than muscle. Some people will say it's like your body is "preparing to be starved again" & I think that's a good analogy. One of the downsides of this is that if you have anorexia & manage to get through it, your body will end up storing more fat which is typically less flattering than a normal combination of fat & muscle. This can cause the sufferer to feel validated in their body dysmorphia & may cause a relapse, especially if the person is unaware of this effect. The stuff he says about continuing to lose weight after eating a regular amount is misleading though. Weight change is calories in minus calories out/used. If you starve yourself for nearly a year & eat properly for a week you're going to gain weight that week, unless you have diarrhoea or something & the food isn't absorbed properly. I think he must have underestimated how much he was eating because he probably felt full quicker but still wasn't eating enough to get himself out of that caloric deficit.
Notice he ate small, frequent 3x daily, meat-based (egg and fish) products primarily so he was protecting his gut, muscles, nerves, brain. And NO sugar in that diet as described here. I would love to hear more about who he worked with to come up with that regimen. And if he reintroduced sugar gradually or not at all...fascinating. FIVE months. That is not a super long time. 50 pounds. What a difference it made. He is one badass DUDE.
I think there’s a fine line between acting and health ! My son was 140 lbs and. 6 feet tall ( not by choice), I could count his ribs he was so tiny , now 200 healthy muscle , this is crazy , your organs and mental state may be effected ! I too was thin , you loose your energy it’s nuts !
Im a starting actor and had to bulk up physically a bit before I was guaranteed the role and even once I was chosen continued to workout while it was possible I could get recasted so I get his commitment part
Totally get the he kept losing it even after he started eating more. Happened to me too. For a few months after cutting out dairy and gluten( did it with my wife for support for a cleanse) I would eat anything and lost a little more then stayed that weight no matter what for a few months. Then it went back to normal from there. It amazed me tho and showed me how powerful the body is.
It doesn't me. I fast 3 x a week and the other days have half sandwich at lunch and 1/2 at dinner. All it does is go right thru me when I eat so I don't like eating much. Don't sleep but no energy it sucks
It seems to work well if you're overweight but if you're already lean, it's hard on you're body. I've done 5 day fasts at different bodyweights and it's a vastly different experience each time. Could not sleep when I was lean. Could just be me though.
It didn't make him " tough as nails" he said he tried to run for 50ft and his knee locked up and he fell. If you fast at an already healthy weight it makes you WEAK.
Matthew McConaughey. I first heard your name while on the phone with your Uncle Rooster. You were just getting started and he was proud of you! I worked for the McGlaughlins in Colorado. Sr., Jr., Bart and good ol' Wes.
Dallas's a great movie and Matthew did an amazing job. His weight loss made more sense to me comparing The Machinist with Christian Bale. Both great movies.
I’m dealing with pretty much the same situation. My mind never sleeps and it affects how I eat. My stomach is clearly empty but my mind just prevents me from having any appetite
@@tommibaker8836 i think they ment ... losing all the weight at that time makes u look older . In the movie he did look alot older. Like he aged. I agree .
My theory why his sences were through the roof is because his body went into primal survival mode depending and relying on its sences and having all advantages to hunt and gather food.
If he wants that mental acuity back and maintain his ideal weight, all he has to do is intermittent fasting with a lower carb diet and proper nutrition. All of his health problems he was expressing frustration with in regards to his cartilage was from his poor diet and all the fat he cut out. You can still cut and eat healthy balanced meals.
McConaughey literally looked like a survivor from a concentration camp in that film. The amount of discipline and commitment it took to lose that crazy amount of weight for a role is mind blowing. HUGE respect for the man.
I've eaten a whole bag of potato chips, two bowls of ice cream, chocolate, and some cake the last couple of days and I'm still in decent shape :) It's all about calories in and calories out.
@@True38 when it comes to weight loss, this is true (except don't forget that proper nutrition means getting your vitamins, minerals, and proper portions of your macros). When you're DIETING-dieting, i.e. getting cut, keeping a cheat meal once per week (usually on a high carb day if you carb cycle or on the equivalent for keto, etc.) will help trick your body into burning extra fat via the release of a hormone called lectin. Additionally, and this is very important when it comes to Matthew McConoughy's case, eating purely strict (especially in the extremes that he was) for 5, 6 months or beyond will adjust your body to the foods you're eating and those ALONE (a survival mechanism), just like when the Jews were discovered after the holocaust and some of them over-ate to the point of death because their bodies had been accustomed to a starvation diet for YEARS. tl;dr DON'T let your body become accustomed to a strictly rigid diet for the long-term or you will find your body breaking down from anything outside that diet.
Two years ago I would have been skeptical of his experience. Now that I eat once a day and almost no carbs, I'm experiencing that mental clarity, sleeping less but feeling better, fat continues to melt away. My mood is better and consistently better. The mental clarity, I find it feels like a runners high without the running. If I was trying to cut more and more weight, I would eat the same meal I do now, lots of food, and then keep extending the length of my fast. Eat once every two days, three days. I not sure how long I'd have to fast to get that kind of a result. If you haven't tried fasting this will sound pretty strange.
@@brentstack3267 well if it's dry wine, not much sugar/carbs. But the alcohol is still empty calories and would definitely slow down the fat burning process
@@brentstack3267 I wonder if he left out details about some Hollywood pills, or if his idea of "as much wine as I wanted" is a measly 2 glasses/night lol
Sounds like the mind realizes the body is physically much weaker and the senses get more acute as a survival mechanism. Possibly realizing you can not afford to get into much of a physical altercation. The mind being more sharp may help avoid confrontation.
Someone explain why my body tells me I need more comfort food during the holidays and the Winter? It never fails I gain 10-12 lbs and have all that to lose before I can wear my Summer speedos. Damn it!
It might be that youre trained to think "ey its the holidays! tis the season for sweet treats" along with more of it being around you and then when that passes there isn't as much to keep you busy in the winter so your mind trails back to comfort foods. I have a few friends that always comment on how they can't say no to all the food thats offered at all the parties they get invited to during that time of year and struggle with the same thing. One even mentioned that they were criticized for just wanting to meet up for the party but not eat... weird.
Coz its cold? Comfort food is often easy calories. Easy to digest and store as fat for later. Get more protein. You can even get some flavoured protein shake. That way you can have something comforting and tasty but also healthy.
it's all mind over matter i only eat once a day and i eat until i am full but i also eat whatever i want and i'm 12 -13 kilo's under my height to weight ratio i love warm chocolate mudcake with honeycomb ice cream and caramel toppings fudge sauce for breakfast to the point that i eat so much of it that it makes me overdose on sweetness and stop eating it before i'm full just because the sweetness gets to me but i have it for breakfast coz i burn it off during the day and are full of energy for the day stomach groans of hunger only affect me when i am out of energy and in need of fuel to keep working without taking a nap but i have trained my brain body etc to only eat once a day eating as much as i can until im full and then knowing that it is enough to fuel me until the following day and it is but i swear i can eat whatever i like and it doesn't affect me getting fat or muscly skinny etc my body only cares that i fuel it i am 48 yrs old ive been doing drugs and partying everyday like its my last since i was 20yrs old and i am still in good health and don't get sick or ill only occasionally do i get a broken tooth or something but that is due to medication taken for to long and it depletes my body of nutrients etc but off the meds my body balances itself out within months the only times i ever have issues is when i don't get enough sleep sleep is the gift that gives back imo thats when the brain and body work in unison and repair all but as long as you are active at least once a day for 15 minutes or more 1 meal of whatever you want and as much of it as it takes to fill you up is plenty enough to get by without gaining weight the only thing that makes you gain weight is alcohol because alcohol makes the body retain fat no matter how fit you are or how much exercise you do if you drink you will retain fat this is my 48yrs of experience talking so give up booze and you can eat chocolate mudcake with honeycomb icecream and fudge or toppings of your choosing for breakfast and you'll be happy as larry why wouldn't you enjoy that for breakfast i say lol anyway peace out and rock on
