Mauled by a Bear and Left to Die

I think we can all agree that being attacked by a bear ranks high on the worst possible fates someone can suffer. This was especially true before modern medicine, but this story is even worse than that. This is the infamous story of a man who was brutally mauled by a bear in the remote wilderness and then left for dead by his companions.

As someone who lives where there's bears and cougars around if I run into a higher rung on the food chain that's mad at me I would always hope it's a cougar. Cats are efficient killers. Bears are NOT. A bear attack would be 100% one of the worst possible ways to go.

Depends on the cat... Lion's can be savage AF and often will eat the prey alive if there are other predators like Hyena around! Truthfully though, I think any cat would have to be really desperate or feel trapped or threatened (kittens present) for it to attack a human. In 'most' cases you can stand your ground against a cat... A bear in autumn??? you're fucked!!!! I've never set foot in the USA, African boy over here... can say there is still one beast more terrifying than any bear or cat! You have no idea how terrifying hippos are

The bear attack of allena Hansen is one of the most brutal things I've ever read. She did a reddit ama that's worth the read. It began eating her face, she remembers the bear pausing to spit out her teeth. Luckily she had 2 massive dogs sleeping close by. Without a face, she drove herself to the local fire station. She thought her grotesque appearance would put the firefighters in shock, so to lighten the mood, she walked into the station and loudly proclaimed " Honey, I'm home!" Theres a lot of news articles on it, but the ama is what I suggest reading over

When I was a medic I had a patient who was in an accident that sliced his throat from ear to ear and it was so severe that it sliced open his trachea with a huge hole. A first responder was holding pressure and every time he exhaled you could see the skin flapping around. It was awful but he survived but he was in the hospital for a while from what I understand due to getting pneumonia. It’s a horrible injury and had the wound been a mm over it would have gotten his carotid artery and jugular vein

@@vicvega3614 nope. He was standing on a forklifts forks when it overturned (don’t ask why he was on that because I have no idea) and I think the necklace he was wearing must have gotten caught on the forklift because he had a huge laceration to his neck. It was a miracle he survived at all but he remained conscious the entire way until I gave him a medicine to put him out so we could get an airway. He also asked me to call his girlfriend on his phone. She was like “who the hell is this” as I’m a female with her boyfriends phone but because of the laceration slicing open his trachea he couldn’t speak at all and the hospital we took him to was probably about 40 minutes away and we couldn’t get the helicopter because of the weather. Our local ER wasn’t trained to fix the trauma this man had. It was a miracle he survived at all. I’ve actually seen this injury on someone else as well when a woman had her throat cut ear to ear and nicked the trachea but it wasn’t as bad as the other guys but hers was more bloody. She begged us to not let her die. Her scumbag husband or boyfriend (can’t remember which) slit her throat in an attempt to murder her. She also survived thankfully. Movies make it look like everyone dies immediately after having their throat slit. If they miss the carotid artery or the jugular vein than this doesn’t usually happen. I was never called to testify so I assume the boyfriend or whatever he was took a plea deal.
@malaciousmark3903
@malaciousmark3903 Месяц назад
@@debrakleid5752having your trachea cut open really is not a significant deal at all. It does not impede airflow at all and many times enhances it especially if you have swelling in your oral cavity. Tracheostomies are routinely performed which is when you purposely cut into the trachea. Obviously having your jugular or carotid is deadly unless it is immediately stopped.

The feeling when you are hiking and come across a mother bear and her cubs really strikes you frozen with fear. It happened to me and my amigos when backpacking in West Virginia once. I heard it first from downhill on a large slope, and saw 3 figures higher up on the hill, 2 small and 1 large. I just froze when I noticed they spotted us and started running. I couldn't make out whether they were charging toward us or away because it was just their silhouettes I could see. Thankfully, it was them running away from us, and then I could tell they were black bears which made sense. If they were grizzlies, I know at least I would probably be dead since I was the slowest member of the group.

When I was a teenager out canoe,-camping in Ontario with my parents, days away from civilization, I was making a portage between a lake and a river and a couple of bear cubs appeared on the trail in front of me. I did not see the mother so I very slowly backed away and waited for some until I didn’t hear any more bear sounds. Oh my God I was freaked. I also came face-to-face with some moose but those outcomes were less scary. I just sort of went into the woods bypass the big guy.

I was canoeing at a state park with a group and we were told about alligators swimming around. Reports of attacks were pretty low and were usually people doing things they shouldn’t like poking at the gators or attempting to feed them. Anyway, we were canoeing around and saw a small alligator a few meters out looking at us. We laughed how cute it was, then we froze and went “Oh s***! Where’s momma?!” and quickly paddled away 🌊 🛶🌊 We did see some bigger alligators staring at us, but fortunately nothing happened. However, it’s always nerve wracking seeing a baby critter and not exactly knowing where the mom is.

There are no cannibalistic Native Americans (at least in North America). Actually, I think I remember learning about the tribe you're talking about in my Native American history class in college. The professor pointed out that actually, the only existing story of that tribe in relationship to cannibalism is a group of white men who tried to sail across the Gulf of Mexico and ended up lost and eating each other. The Native Americans were duly horrified, and since this was their first direct contact with Europeans, they saw them as less than human. I've heard from other sources that Native Americans won't eat their dead even if they're dying of hunger (e.g. the Native guides from the Donner Party died rather than join in the cannibalism). But on the other hand, the Europeans saw a bunch of dark-skinned people who didn't wear much in the way of clothes, so of course they have to be cannibals! Anyone primitive enough not to wear clothes has to be a cannibal! We did learn about Native Americans burning people at the stake, though. According to our professor, it was a way to allow captured men to regain their honor by dying in pain. Nobody explained this to the Europeans, of course, so they would beg for mercy, and therefore show themselves to be dishonorable. Another common false accusation against Native Americans was rape of female captives: that came from fictional captive narratives written to be as scandalous as possible. Anyway, please don't talk about any native people being cannibals unless there's modern scholarship actually proving that this happened, not just reports from people at the time. It's offensive and used as an argument that people of color are lesser than white people.

The 1913 Handbook of Indians of Canada (reprinting 1907 material from the Bureau of American Ethnology) claims that North American natives practising cannibalism included the Montagnais, and some of the tribes of Maine; the Algonkin, Armouchiquois, Iroquois, and Micmac; farther west the Assiniboine, Cree, Foxes, Chippewa, Miami, Ottawa, Kickapoo, Illinois, Sioux, and Winnebago; in the south the people who built the mounds in Florida, and the Tonkawa, Attacapa, Karankawa, Caddo, and Comanche; in the northwest and west, portions of the continent, the Thlingchadinneh and other Athapascan tribes, the Tlingit, Heiltsuk, Kwakiutl, Tsimshian, Nootka, Siksika, some of the Californian tribes, and the Ute. There is also a tradition of the practice among the Hopi, and mentions of the custom among other tribes of New Mexico and Arizona. Amazing vid as always. I'd love to hear more about a story I once read, about a submarine crew that got stranded but for some reason couldn't be rescued, so they were left to die, all while still requesting help. Sadly I can't remember where I read it

My grandma lived in Texas and she would tell us about how she and her siblings would have to run home from school because of snakes. She called them sidewinders and said they would chase them through the fields. I am terrified of snakes and spiders so I thought this was the worst story ever told about walking to school. Grandma had it easy peasy compared Grizzly bears and mountain lions! 😮😳😱

I appreciate the upfront clarification that it is mix of some facts and a lot speculation umors. It bothers me with similar YT channels make inaccurate claims of events because it is good for the channel to appear as if a lot of Indepth research has occurred in the making.

wow, i went to high school in the town that fort atkinson is in. i always said it was the only cool thing we had, but didn't know it had been so central to the infamous hugh glass story. we'd just get drunk and run to their from the school, trying to avoid getting caught by other students. i still live close and i love checking out historical sights, i'll have to make a visit this summer!! it has been a couple years since i last went

In the book I read, Jim was a young Jim Bridger. Parts of the book that stuck with me were the maggots in his wounds, how he eventually crawled to a stream where the fish ate the maggots and dead flesh. Or How he was almost trampled by bison but they went around because he was wearing the bear skin the others wrapped him in to keep him warm. Same bear that tried to kill him.
