From Transatlantic Sessions series 2 (1998) song: Nanci Griffith/Rick West bass: Danny Thompson piano: Donald Shaw dobro: Jerry Douglas guitar: Russ Barenberg
This was recorded in 1998. I read today that Nanci survived bouts with breast cancer in 1996 and thyroid cancer in 1998. What a strong spirit. Rest in Peace.
RIP dear Nanci. I was heartsick when Dan Fogelberg passed away over a decade ago, followed a few months later by Kate McGarrigle. Now I am incredibly saddened by the passing of Nanci Griffith. All incredibly gifted songwriters. We were blessed to have heard and lived their music.
Ireland has over the last century produced some of the most amazing singers and here is another one. Such a huge talent. No wonder Nanci spends so much time in the Emerald isle
Unbelievable. Two of my favorite songbirds. RIP Nanci. What an artist. Such sensitive and lovely songwriting! I love how Nanci humbly allows Maura to take the lead on the vocals, appearing to thoroughly enjoy the justice she offers this masterpiece. And the two together--wow, those harmonies. I can't stop listening.
I can't even begin to comment on this performance. Nanci is one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and this is just glorious. I've never heard of Maura O'Connell, but I'm going to look for her now. Amazing voice.
Gorgeous song by two beautiful artists. So sad to hear of Nanci's passing. Gone too soon. Rest in peace wonderful lady. A beautiful angel now singing with the Lord. What a gift He got yesterday. Condolences to her family and musical friends. Thank you for all the lovely music Nanci.
What a beautiful pair of voices! Maura O'Connell sings with such power and beauty. Nanci Griffith sings and plays so beautifully. This is rare harmony.
Such sadness to learn of Nancy's passing. A heart and voice in the correct place , always.....not forgetting this version with the lovely voice of Maura O'Connell.
I've listened to this song hundreds of times by both Maura and Nanci and I cry every time. I feel silly every time I hear Maura sing it live. It's really the only song that does this to me. Such a treasure
Modern, even I who am of Maura's generation wouldn't say that. Maura's seminal solo album Collected, her best work in my opinion, was released in 1987. There are so many, unique and diverse, traditional and non traditional, established and new, female singers, songwriters and musicians (men too) in Ireland today, it would be extremely difficult to pick any one above the rest.
I do love her music and it was a very gracious of her to welcome my husband and I to sit and share drinks and conversation with her and her band members after a small local concert we went to years ago. Our oldest daughter chose" Feet of a Dancer" for her dance with her daddy at her wedding. Maura's music has been a part of the "soundtrack" of our 30 year marriage from the beginning. She has a beautiful voice and there is also so much soul in every song she performs. Thank you for sharing this video. It is a beautiful reminder of love even in troubled times.
This reminds me of my wife and I on our honeymoon in Ireland 13 years ago. We listened to this album the whole time. We named our youngest daughter Maura. Love this song.
It is how this music slides with ease into the best instincts of American country music......and her voice, so exqusisite, leaves the hardest man in tears.
Hi I agree with your comment but thank god for YT people outside of Ireland would not have heard of her.Ireland is graced by so many fine singers and she is a truley talented artist and more important a fine human being.I saw her in concert for charity last year and was blown away by her talent and humanity.
I just watched a 2 hour documentary on the "black blizzards' of the "dust bowl". My heart goes out to the victims of that prolonged drought. This song stands as a nice tribute to their fortitude and courage.
I saw Maura open for John Prine as well. It was at Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. I saw her again back around 2012 - 2013 at the Birchmere in Alexandria VA. She is phenomenal.
We know all about trouble in the fields Here in Ireland 🇮🇪 The land crab is on thanks to the bloody Banks ... Ar dheis Dè go raibh a hanam dìlis.. May Nanci noble soul rest in peace .Greetings from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 its raining 🌧tears for Nanci sure she was wan of our own...
Always loved Nanci. Used to watch her at the Texas Club in Baton Rouge when she was rising. Obviously, a talented rising star. Love her. Her covers are killer too.
Had the great good fortune to see Nanci in concert in a tiny club in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. I was at least 10 years a devoted fan - maybe nearly 20, I don't remember the year. Humble, charming, and utterly inspiring. This teaming with Maura O'Donnell is gold. Rest well.
This song is the best commentary on prosperity / bust and feast / famine cycle of farmers - WORLDWIDE! I LOVE IT... Such universal truths. One day, hopefully when it is not too late, we will recognize we wouldn't eat without the struggles of farmers.
I saw Maura several times. The first was at a bookstore where she sang Acapella in a CD aisle. Probably the greatest singing performance I ever saw ..Joan Osborne was a close second.
Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever". All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.
I love this version, Ihe power of Maura`s voice adds another layer of depth to this song.Nanci sounded great and looked like she was having fun doing the harmonies.
I have seen Maura as a solo, I saw her with Nanci, and I saw her with the GREAT Mary Black. Each time I left saying her voice can rattle the windows! I think this video shows how much Nanci loved sharing the stage with her fellow artist.
I saw Maura sing with Van Morrison in L.A. (along with Solomon Burke and members of The Chieftains) a couple of months ago. Great show at a very small venue.
Maura is in Ireland saw her last night in Limerick with the RTE concert orchestra. It was brilliant but a pity the concert hall was only half full. She's in Leisureland Galway tonight 16th October. I highly recommend anyone who likes music to go You will not be disappointed.
I never tire of listening to these folks. Great harmony by Maura and Nancy, and a superb back-up by the musicians, who lend their own sensitivity to such a timeless song.
I had the pleasure of seeing Maura 20 years ago when she was a guest vocalist for Phil Coulter and she was outstanding. She was funny cuz she was wearing a nice dress and looked great but she clomped onto the stage like she was headed for the milking parlor. I heard that she was bound for Nashville but never heard another thing about her until this video. I am delighted that she has befriended Nanci and is still performing. You bet that i would have loved to have been there. So talented.
lovely voice, and great arrangement as usual with Nanci Griffith's work. just discovered Maura, and am an immediate fan. Nani's harmonizing and obvious admiration for Maura's excellent instrument...well a pleasure to watch as well.
OMG, totally brilliant singing, song-writing, musicianship and vocal harmony! Blown away by this performance! God bless Nanci, recently departed, but in our hearts for ever. Love and peace.
Great song .. great artists... I always felt that Nanci's "One Fair Summer Evening" Album was one of the great "unknown" albums ... Well worth the listen... (The DVD of the album is a winner as well!!)
Maura O'Connell singing, 'Living in These Troubled Times' is really relevant too - Happy Christmas and Good Health to Everyone worldwide from Ireland! xxx Maureen.
