In this video we talk about whether Maurten products and whether they might be useful as nutrition during a triathlon. Maurten use hydrogels and this may help deliver carbohydrates to improve racing performance. Maurten hydrogels could help to fuel your triathlon and could be used as nutrition for an Ironman or any other triathlon distance.

Great points. Maurten is great but it requires some training. I tried only the 320 mix as pre race energy. Excellent. Then in a recent 70.3 Maurten gels we’re given at the aid stations. I took the first and thought it was expired ;-). Then it gave me lots of energy. Then I kept eating it But for next time I will make sure to pre train with hidrogels

I think that's also another positive to using Maurten in your training if you race ironman events. As Maurten and Ironman have partnered the course nutrition should be Maurtenm.. And it's always sensible to practice race nutrition!

I was very skeptical about the hype around Maurten for many years. Having exhausted other products that did not work out well for me, I bit the bullet, and paid up. The flavor is great, texture great, and when I eat them, I don't get the feeling of a gel congealing in my gut. I will be using this as my primary fuel for Formosa Xtreme Triathlon next week (230km and 6850m climbing, with the entire run at 1600m and above up to 3475m) so that should be a good test of how well Maurten works for me over a tough day out. I like the videos and information. Maybe tighten things up just a little to give us the info faster! :) But thank you for the video!

Hey Darren, thanks for the comment and your input! Sounds like a brutally tough event, good luck with it and I hope it goes well 😀 Interesting to hear Maurten products worked so well for you. They definitely surprised me as I'd been skeptical for a long time too. And thanks for feedback on video delivery, it's important for me to hear! Bit of a work in progress to try to make it succinct but still feel like I give enough info - will keep refining! 🙂

What are your thoughts on Maurten products?

I'm curious your opinion on fueling strategy for a full Ironman using Maurten? The only reason I haven't fully switched is because having to take 3-4 gels an hour to hit carb intake seems a bit overboard and too much to handle. Can you shed any light on how others are using them?

Will you do a review on the Ucan super starch carbohydrate supplement? Thank you! Really liked your video on this product.

Hey, thank you! That's great to hear. I'll put it on my list but if I'm totally honest I probably won't get round to it soon if at all - I have lots of other topics stacked up! However, I am going to do a video specifically on products that contain nutrition like what is in UCAN (so maize/starch) and will cover it then!

I tried Maurten at Ironman Austria. Started to get a bit of an upset tummy and switched to Maurten gels on the ride. After that it settled and used it for the ride and some more on the run. Finished strong with no more issues. It's a weird texture but works very well

Great video. Do u recommend adding an additional sodium, salt supplement to use with maurten products?
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon 2 года назад
Thanks! Good question. I think it's very situational. How long is your race? Do you know if you are a heavy or a light sweater? What sort of climate are you racing in? I think some people will be just fine with the products as they are, but for others they would probably benefit from adding salt to the product. I did speak to Maurten about this, and they confirmed you could add up to a maximum of 1g (1000mg) of table salt to the product and not disrupt the formula. They recommended against using salt tablets. Hope that helps!

Hey. When you say seems a bit overboard and too much to handle, what do you mean? And are you talking about the bike or run portion? Or all of it? The easiest way for the bike leg would be to use their 320 mixes which provide 80g of carbs per serving, as that would allow you get more carbs on board without needing gels. Then it would be pretty normal to have 2-4 gels an hour (depending on your goal) on the run. That's a pretty normal amount of gels on the run too and there's not really a way to get around that unless you use a gel containing more carbs in one go.

A bit late for a comment hehe but do you use them for everyday training as well? I could see myself using it for racing and a bit for key sessions to get used to it but it is very expensive for everyday sessions when you train 20h per week and need to fuel for every session
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon 7 месяцев назад
No, I don't, and you're right. For everyday training these are very expensive. Personally I use my own sports drink mix for that, as it's cheap and effective! The link to that is here if you'd like to make your own: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mitr9w2IX24.html

Hi James, would be keen to hear your thoughts on just bulk buying maltodextrin and dextrose as well as some form of electrolyte mix and creating your own beta fuel/maurten 320 for 20% of the price? Might not taste as good but could it work as a cheap alternative for winter training months? 5kg bags of maltodextrin and dextrose are £10 and £7 respectively. Thanks
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon 2 года назад
Hi Jasper! Yep, you could definitely do that and there are plenty of people who do. As you say, it might not taste quite as good but does the job a lot cheaper! You could also just use normal table sugar if that's easier/cheaper for you. Table sugar is sucrose, which is a 1:1 glucose/frucose ratio and so also a good option! And of course just remember solid food too, especially if your intensity isn't as high in the winter 🙂 bananas, oat bars etc are all viable options for your endurance work 🙂

if i used Maurten gels for a marathon and supplement that with a drink with sodium would that be ok? (tailwind or unived)
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon Год назад
Yep, definitely. Just make sure you don't go out of your tolerance range for carbs though if you include a carbohydrate based drink like tailwind or unived. If you just want to use gels as your carb source you could consider an electrolyte drink without carbs.

So all in all would you choose maurten over most products for racing? is there a reason all the best in the world choose them?
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon Год назад
Personally, yes. I now use them for my racing. In part that is just because I like them, tolerate them well and feel they work well for me. Is there a reason the best in the world choose them? Yes, definitely. According to the current research they probably are vying for the top sports nutrition products, or certainly in the top 2 (in my opinion). However, that doesn't mean that aren't worlds best in different sports NOT using them, or that those same athletes wouldn't do just as well using a different product. I don't think that everyone needs to use Maurten products, and I don't think they are the 'best' for everyone. If you find a sports nutrition product that you like, tolerate and find that works - possibly better to just stick with that (but that does depend on the formula etc, because Maurten and brands like SIS are using the latest evidence, and not all sports nutrition brands are doing that).

Using this for a 70.3 but feel like we’re lacking in the salts department 😕. Also the flavor reminds me of marshmallows, good stuff, doesn’t hurt my stomach just need some an electrolyte
@NutritionTriathlon
@NutritionTriathlon 2 года назад
Yep, agreed! I contacted Maurten about the low salt content and they advised that you could add table salt to the formula without disrupting it. You could add 500-1000mg of table salt (the higher end if you know your water is low in other minerals such as calcium). This would bump the overall salt/sodium content of the drink up a good amount!
