February 4th was a special day at Half Moon Bay. Home to the famed Mavericks Big Wave Surf locale. The surf was big, the turnout even bigger. Approximately 50 riders paddling at any given time. Sets were rolling in more consistent then we have ever seen before. Glassy conditions, sunny skies and light winds. Check Damian Hobgood’s bomb at 0:17.

Nice work with the multirotor! You gotta have nerves of steel putting that much money in the air over water with no hope of recovering it if something goes wrong. Good angles, good movement and flow, very nice subject centering. Well done.

One of the few well done drone views of Mavericks, good editing. Nice to see the situation from various angles rather than one deadly monster after another as in some videos.

great footage. some of the best surf footage I've seen. I'm just getting into Arial photography w8th a phantom 2 w/ gimbal. super fun. drones were made for this : great action sports photography. I don't want drones dropping bombs ...or pizza. ...or mail.

Very good footage! Thanks for posting it. Two things, a lot of people taking off on the shoulder, although that one guy in the begining taking off deep and pulling in backside.... Balls of titanium man, phew! Also other than the board length needed to catch one, the length of the boards seem to almost be hampering the riders both in ability to turn and speed. But then I've never surfed it so I don't know? But your footage was exemplary and I actually liked the music I think it created a good ambiance to the action, especially in the face of the Super Bowl which obviously was more like the sand box or kiddie pool when you look at the REAL Super Bowl! R.I.P Brock Little

Awesome footage I can only congratulate you for this. I am also a drone licensed pilot and I can tell that filming surf is one of the most difficult things to shoot. I dream to go to film the Maverics but probably I have to upgrade from. my DJI Mavic Pro to something better before. May I Ask which drone did you use for this? My only critic is probably the music does not fit perfectly the video but I am a music producer so probably I am being too critical here. Congrats again and I would love to see the behind the scenes video.

are there rocks where all that white water is? if so is it a danger and what would the dangers there? just curious

+Shamweeniedog10 There are big rocks that poke out after the waves about 50 yards from where it crashes. On big days, there is usually a safety water team on personal water craft that can help rescue surfers if they end up in the danger zone. But they only have 10-15 seconds to grab them before the next wave comes. It is a dangerous job and often not thanked enough. They risk their lives to help the surfers before they get pushed into the rocks or buried by the next wave.

I dont like that fish eye lens makes the waves look smaller than they are.

+Cary Spading Thanks, but it isn't a fish eye. It is a 20mm 2.8f. You may be used to seeing tele-zoom footage from the water and cliff that compresses the space. 50mm is equivalent of vision from one human eye. 35mm is close to the vision from both eyes at once. So a little wider then the human eyes being at the same point in space.
