Braddock fought an incredibly skilled fight, consistently beating Baer to the punch, changing stances, getting inside. He had clearly studied Baer, knew what to do, and did it. Absolutely masterclass, and a deserving champion.

Definitely! Also thought that the guy portraying Max Baer in the movie did a good job with Baer's mannerisms ie fight pose, putting his left hand on Braddock's head to set up for the right, and pulling up his own shorts

Boxing fans are definitely the luckiest. You can watch FULL fights from 100 years ago! I can't even find full games of Wilt Chamberlain and that was like 1970, all you can find is random highlights. I even struggle to find games from the 80s. This fight was 1935 and you get to see it all it's amazing. You can even go back further and see Jack Johnson and his era! You can pretty much find almost every fight. God I wish the same was true for basketball.

@Achilles 1776 It's not 'borrowed' money though. When you need it, you need it and it's normal public spending. People from the U.S. have a very hard time understanding this concept and seem to think it's noble to refuse it. It's not noble, it's stupid.

Just like FDR said: "We should not measure welfare's success by how many people are on it, but by how many people leave it." I'm sure after this fight (and Braddock's actions) Franklin thought, "And how many people add to it too." But unlike books (forewords, afterwords etc), statements do not get addendums.

Accept that they unnecessary demonized a good man just for the sake making a movie. Max Bear was a really good human being. He lost because he was in depression because he had killed two men in ring prior to it and became a drunk after that filled with dispair paid bills of those families who got killed at his hands. He is a good human being. Its just that people died because of his game and he was that good

I gotta wonder if Baer threw this fight. He is nowhere near as aggressive here as he was with Schmelling and Carnera. Maybe Baer knew that Braddock was the morale boost that society needed and maybe just showed up to fight. He did a lot of clowning around and tried to make it look good. He also seemed to underestimate Braddock just enough to where he thought he could knock him out later on, but it wasn't to be. Nothing against Braddock, but Baer just didn't look like he was in it.

Just like most people online do, they jump to hasty conclusions and make their opinions known before doing any research on the matter. As with anything, it's important to learn history from all perspectives of those involved. By doing so, you are much more likely to be deemed as having any real knowledge of the topic.
@timber750

He had power in his punches, lots of energy, and could take a punch. But no argument about fundamentals. My view is he showed his best against Carnera, who was slow, a bit clumsy, and despite great height had less reach. Braddock was quick, game, and determined.

Even though Braddock was dominating Baer (I have Braddock 15-0; I know this happened 88 yrs ago, but hey, scoring boxing in your head is half the fun of watching it!), I would not wanna get hit by either fighter. Every punch, glancing or not, made me shiver in terror! Two warriors, both of them. One thing I will say though: Thank God for footwork in boxing! Makes it so much more fun to watch. Apparently, Baer knocked both of their brains loose from the base of the skull. I don't know if that's actually possible, but that's what I've read. Of course he didn't plan on killing anyone. Were the rounds 2 minutes, sped up, or carefully edited? wondering how a 15 round fight clocked in at about 30 minutes. I've seen it with other fights, too.

Baer waited until the 15th round to start fighting with any real desire and determination., That is not an approach that wins fights. Why wasn't he doing the same in the earlier rounds? Braddock earned the win.

I agree. Baer was embarrassed by his ineffectiveness on Braddock after clowning and dismissing Braddock's ability. Got desperate at the end.

Max seems to block punches with his face. Interesting technique.

Baer never really did throw his right bomb very much, so maybe the talk about a training injury has something to it. Although it may also be possible that an experienced quick fighter like Braddock may have found a way to duck it, and prevent it from connecting most of the time.

Max just never took boxing too seriously. Except for the Carnera and Schmeling fights.

If they had bought Baer some suspenders, he might have won that fight. How annoying!

No Max was just keeping aware of the no hitting below the waistline , ready to pull his shorts up past his chin, and Max had a good chin but he let J.J land to many.

Baer always seems to adjust his shorts. I've saw the fight with him and Carnera and he was adjusting his shorts up there.

Why would you hate Max Baer? I do sincerely hope you're not basing this on his portrayal in Cinderella Man. In truth, Baer was a great guy.

Braddock was a crafty old pro. He was good at using his head & a tough guy. And Baer wasn’t the prick that opie howard made him out to be in the movie.

No surprise that the REAL fight was completely different than the Cinderella Man "hyped up" version. JJB was definitely not to be denied that night, but Baer looked like he didn't even train for this one, and was maybe gun shy with the right hand after killing one fighter in the ring, and possibly another. Regardless, JJB's amazing comeback run after hitting rock bottom in more ways than one, was legendary and super inspiring!

I seen some odd comment saying how the 30s-40s were in black in white and at a lower fps that's why they look way less advanced and if they were in color with higher fps they would be more advanced Is that possible it can fix obsolete flaws and add better tech/fluid/timing/defense can adding color and higher fps manipulate footage so they would look as advanced as guys in 70s-90s?

I've seen this a few times before, it's a great fight and it's a great story. Russell Crowe did imitate his style really well, except for one thing, one big thing, head butts, and they were both doing it, more than anything you will see these days. It seemed to be an acceptable thing during those times.
