Max Bygraves performs the Lionel Bart song, and hit for him, 'Fings Ain't What They Used To Be' at the 1960 Royal Variety Show.
He is then joined by Billy Cotton in a Pinky and Perky routine, which they both did a few years earlier on TV and is available to watch elsewhere on RU-vid.
Max's joke about 'youth of today' is relevant even now!!

Sometimes You Only Realise The True Value Of A Moment.....When It Becomes A Memory

I grew up with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and the like, but I've known this song for quite a few years, though I had never seen this performance before. A really consummate performer. Far better than most of the stuff that is being offered on TV nowadays.

The first gag went over the top of everybody in the theatre, Max paused for the laughter, for about 2 seconds it didn't come , pressed on and the next gag hit the spot, C'est la vie !!!

I’ve seen this sketch many times but it never fails to move me, it’s not the song but Billy and Max together. I loved the Billy Cotton Band show. Strangely he used to remind me, as a 7 year old of the owner of the Carlton Hotel In Bournemouth, where, with my paternal Grandma we spent most Easter Summer and Winter holidays! Odd isn’t it, How memories flood back when you’re least expecting them! Latterly Max used to play golf at our local golf club. Jimmy Tarbuck still does!

I' ve never been a fan of old age. Not for the first time I'm struck powerfully by seeing people - who I only became aware of when they were much older - in their prime. And " the youth of today" he refers to are living in their 8th decade today. Btw that dance number may have been accepted fare 60 years ago but it would attract some blank stares in 2020.

The person who wrote these words was an old Dr. Barnardo Frank Norman, it was Joan Littlewood who asked Lional Bart to write the music and the rest is history.
@MrFreezexx
@MrFreezexx 10 лет назад
The tune is plagiarised from Mountain Greenery by Richard Rodgers though.
@Cookie69697

So the man who is thought to have written this didn't but hey it's a great music hall hit and without that great man Lional Bart we may not have ever heard the song.......

+Chris Rogers - share those stories with us. who cares whether they are true or made up? the newspapers will still print them. and YOU will make a mint. and maxie cannot sue you from the grave. his offsprings might, though !!

question -when Billy cotton introduces Max Bygraves why does he say "also associated with the show" can someone tell me why ??
@1948DESMOND
@1948DESMOND 8 лет назад
+Clive Litten - maybe maxy had money invested in the show, or the t.v. production of it. probably. these famous millionaires have fingers in every pie. they have money invested everywhere.

Because Max Bygraves appeared on the Royal Variety Show more times than any one else.
@SALTOWNPRODUCTIONS2

Another possibility might be that Max was appearing regularly on the Billy Cotton Band Show which was a Saturday night staple on BBC TV at the time. Presumably Billy and his band, Alan Breeze and Kathy Kay and the rest of them were doing their own guest spot on the RV Show that year. There was certainly a tradition of comics guesting with BC. Ted Rogers and Leslie Crowther were just two I can reecall.
