Labor’s Housing Minister says their housing agenda is “working across the board”.
Tell that to the renters who are one rent increase away from eviction, whose rents are going up twice as fast as their wages, or who are now sleeping in their cars because they can’t afford the rent.

@user-ns3dq9sh9c Thanks for the concern 😊. Yeah, I have accessed a food bank near me and other support options. Bringing in a cap on rent increases like those in the ACT, would be the least the government could do, for people in a similar position as me.

You are asking a person who can't understand that a tax concession does not involve any payment by government at all. It is a concession. Concessions do not involve any payment. His rant is irrational at least and just plain stupid if seen in true perspective which shows his inability to understand basic financial concepts. The idea he puts across is that investment in housing puts house prices up but government investment via taxes which he calls for more of by some miracle does not do so but is beneficial but when private person does it the situation does not benefit anyone even though it provides a house to rent at lower cost than if no negative gearing existed.

As long as housing remains the premier investment option over index funds and bonds, the property market is doomed. A proper reform will shift the investment philosophy in this country to more productive asset classes, driving up the economy while solving the housing problem. Getting rid of negative gearing so tax payers aren't subsidising bad investments is probably a great place to start!

Housing is a basic human right!!! I'm trying to buy a house at the moment as a first home buyer. It's so hard. I'm in Perth and 70% of home buyers are investors from outside of WA. I am outbid every time. These people are using the house as a cash cow. I want to it to be my home for myself and my boys. I've been trying for a few months now. I'm currently placing an offer on another house- but I'm not holding my breath. I have to be out of this rental on 2nd April and find a place to rent, which will likely be too expensive for me to continue saving towards a larger deposit. So hard.

@@fatwombat2611 And he's also framing the debate in terms which smear anyone who wants a reduction in immigration as "racist". When an audience-member at his recent National Press Club address expressed his concerns for the environment and housing, because of the impact of high immigration, he answered with, "I reject the premise of your question." Straight out of the Coalition playbook. His smug, hypocritical virtue-signaling, which is typical of the Greens, is why I no longer vote for them, having done so for 20 years. They are NOT a an environmentally friendly party, since they support 250,000 NOM, for decades to come. Then they complain about habitat-loss. Thousands of additional people will be homeless this year - including newly arrived immigrants, who are often exploited - and anyone who cheers on this unsustainably high immigration, is complicit. And he has the audacity to take the high moral ground.

You just cant have an extra half a million people a year come in with out increased demand. There are multiple factors why housing has unaffordable and multiple reasons whybthe greedy want to keep the bubble going.

Max Chandler Mather - Previously stated on a site put up by the Greens that "The biggest line item in this years budget was the billions of dollars the government spends on tax concessions for private investors via negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions ." It is a contradiction in terms itself and exposes his failure to understand straight forward basic financial matters. Firstly Tax concessions do not involve any spending by government at all. It is a concession and concessions do not involve any payments. Negative gearing does not involve income tax payments because there is no profit. There are losses. His idea is the government should pay for social housing that requires government putting more money into housing. Yet his argument is that anyone else putting money into housing is not desirable even though it is loss to them. Seldom does such bind sided perspective arise but this is an illustration of Max Chander-Mather's thinking on many aspects of the economy.

The Greens need to stop avoiding what they think the total number of annual immigration should be. Put a figure on it. In the 1990s the Greens had a far more sustainable policy of the balance between population and maintaining a healthy environment and managing pollution. The Greens sold their soul to the economists, that were admittedly, unchallenged in the theory that economic growth was chained to high immigration to fuel property development, the construction section, real-estate sales, consumerism for Woolies and Coles, Insurance and Banking. There was always a cost for this sellout. It's so important to have this discussion without being branded a racist for caring about dead fish in the Murray Darling, for caring about the bulldozing of native habitat for Koalas, Birds, Bandicoots, Sugar Gliders, Quolls, for new property developments on the central coast of NSW and Western Sydney, for wanting to drink water that hasn't been harvested from the ocean, to save the trees in backyards for wildlife rather then having them removed by investors because of the cost of upkeep. Trees are being removed en masse in every suburb for this purpose alone. FFS wake up. The Greens have not pushed for a population policy which takes into account this desert continent's ‘Carrying Capacity’. They see no problem with the current immigration numbers and want to increase these numbers further by increasing the numbers of refugee intake, which I would absolutely support if Australia were to reduce the intake of wealthy immigrants by the same number. THE GREENS DO NOT. I want to support the Greens because I almost completely agree with their policies. Max Chandler Mather, who I respect for his policies, is actively ignoring the impact that high immigration plays in the housing market. How many mature trees does it take to offset the carbon emitted of each Australian? Is it 550? If it is we are fkd.
