The owner of this motorcycle said he felt something "Wrong" with the steering on his motorcycle, the last 2 times he rode it, but couldn't figure out what he was feeling. His wife commented that she saw him multiple times bending over, and looking at the handlebars of the bike. This couple was very, very, very close to being the first fatalities. There is no acceptable circumstance for the steering system of a motorcycle to break off and render it unable to be controlled by the operator, potentially killing him, his wife, and persons in other vehicles or standing nearby. Narrow minded people keep focusing on how the bike is tied to a trailer. That is just an accelerant. A few years from now, this will be commonplace, after people yank up on the same handlebar in the same direction thousands of times to get their bike off the sidestand. Never mind the unwitting victim whose bike tips over in a parking lot, and hits the handlebar... Any normal person would just lift the bike up and ride off. With this bike you could be riding with a cracked steering spindle. This is an issue that Honda should address before something bad happens... they got lucky with this one.
@@paulbickley658 to be fair, it's easier to look at someone else's work and find flaws with it, than to conceive a new concept and execute it from scratch, as I have well learned with making just my little accessory products.
Yikes! That is one bad failure mode. I am one of the unfortunates that purchased a 2001 Goldwing that was plagued with frame weld failure. That was fun. Thanks for posting.
Great demonstration not only showing how well this part works, but shows how you would most definitely know something is seriously wrong when this spindle breaks.
It was so nice to have a guest star, Patrick, in your video. :-) I do have your pin installed and feel even better about it then before. Keep up the good work, Max!
Very nice. I have the E-brake interrupter on mine, while on vacation it seemed to stop working. However, after removing the E-brake handle beauty ring I found that the wire had worked its way free from where I ran it. So, it would intermittently work them stop working, basically, the wire was being pushed against the e-brake switch, then it would relax off the switch, making it work again. Moral of the story, don’t be like me, gaff tape the wire down so it can’t work it’s way in front of the e-brake switch. Lol. I will be installing the steering pin this year on my bike for sure! Great video!
It's important to note that Honda did not provide instruction not to tie this bike down by the handlebars until 2019. By the 2018 Manual (this is a 2018), this guy did nothing wrong.
Dear Max, Wow. Very rare that I can't keep my mouth shut on social media. I'm what is called a 'lurker'. Always reading- never posting. Occasionally bikes like Super Duke (990 Mk2) necessitate joining forum! (Often buy bikes off forums- did with SD). I've been eyeing the new Wing since it's release. (The engine is a larger displacement than my Scooby Levorg though!). Frankly every time I see yet another excellent 'video' by Max I'm overwhelmed by how much got through the net in terms of 'mk1 teething issues'. I live in UK, and don't spanner wield, apart from oil changes and the like!, so either I move nearer to Traxxion HQ or buy a Zero.... Max, keep up the outstandingly good work, I'm not moving but if I bite the bullet- you'll hear from me. Long live Traxxion Dynamics!
@@Traxxion Thanks Max, I'll look him up. (The company name is familiar too me). Have just had my suspension (re-) serviced on my Hornet 919 (Race Tech gold valve fork kit FMGVS2040 including springs FRSPS3732085 and Nitron NTBKH27S shock absorber fitted 4 years ago, I know, waited too long between service interval! Bike was becoming un-rideable/ 'dangerous'. New Metzeler 01 RoadTecs also helped immensely). Can ride 'progressively' again... Steve Jordan, Surrey UK, did all the work. Very happy with their service, but a Wing I feel would need a specialist/ masochist! True to my word, if I purchase a Wing- I'll be saying hello. And buying stuff after advice 'one' would imagine! Keep up the good work, Best wishes, Etienne.
Hello Max McAllister. I am a Gold Wing Rider who works at the 2018 Gold Wing Community Cafe in Korea. Recently, I have been paying attention to various problems and solutions related to steering, and even when I encountered it, I checked the loosening of the spin nut and the wear of the tie rod. In this regard, we are making changes and are currently interested in spindle-related safety pins. It is difficult to purchase on the Traction Dynamics website and purchase on eBay, but there is no such item on eBay. Posting the item on eBay seems to help with your purchase. In addition, in Korea, a large number of symptoms of starting failure occurred during the humid summer. It is strange that Traction's RU-vid has no related video. I am wondering if the problem is due to the weather. I was a Korean Gold Wing rider who appreciates your writing and enjoys watching it.
Hello Janghun! Thank you for contacting me here. We are a very small company, only 8 employees.... so our website is not very high tech. It is not able to calculate good prices for international shipping. I can help you directly by email. max@traxxion.com We use US Postal Small and Medium Flat Rate Boxes, which have a very good price. A lot of our small items can fit in one box. If you have friends prepare a list, I can make one Medium box and put a LOT of parts in it. One small box I can ship 25 pins easily. In a small box I can a tie rod, spindle, pin, kickstand pad, dipstick extender, enough to put many of our products on one bike.
Max I was already sold on this product as logic dictates outcome, but for some people seeing is believing, good job! Now all you have left to convince are the ones that had the corrosion issue that would render the pin useless in about 1K years...good luck with that one ha ha...but again facts and logic will dictate. Max I noticed you had the bike strapped down correctly, but how about strapping the rear wheel to the floor like you did the front one, so as to avoid bounce and possible lateral movement as you well know once you get going there is a lot of bounce in these trailers. I don't know but I see another possible product there, either thru the spokes of hugging the whole tire like on those u-haul trailers for front wheels of cars, just throwing you a bone...keep up the good work.
I remember when you first introduced the pin and all the negative flack you received from all those so-called experts…they be very quiet as of late 🤣😂…
There's an entire crop of people who just hate that anyone might suggest they have to spend a penny on their motorcycle. Luckily, those people don't shop at my company!
Hi Max, Q1: If I don´t ever tie my bike down by the handlebars, could this problem show up for another reason? Q2: Is Honda aware of this problem and will they put a safety pin like yours in the coming production series? Allt the best from Sweden / Pelle
Hello Pelle, My concern for #1 is time. While we have seen them break while tied down, we don't the know the effects of thouands of repetitions of pulling the loaded bike up by the handlebars, or what happens if your bike tips over and you hit the handlebar on the ground. I assume someone at Honda has seen my videos by now. :)
It's important to note that Honda did not provide instruction not to tie this bike down by the handlebars until 2019. By the 2018 Manual (this is a 2018), this guy did nothing wrong.
2 Questions: 1. How many 2018+ Goldwings have been reported with the steering spindle broken, outside of the one that was tied down incorrectly in a trailer? 2. Why does that Goldwing in your video have so much rust on it, never seen that on any other 2018+ Goldwing. Brake rotors, Tie rod, tie rod bolts, etc. ? Just wondering, Thanks!
2 bikes so far. It was not tied down improperly according to the 2018 Owner's Manual. It has been on a trailer for 5 weeks, broken for 3, and was up in the Northeast, Maine, etc. on vacation. Bike is from Lousiana.
@Brian Woodjust pray it doesn't happen to anyone, as this couple almost died. There's not excuse for the steering breaking, no matter what the owner does to tie the bike to a trailer. But remember your sarcasm when people are dead in the future who have never trailered their bike a mile, or for the guy whose bike tips over in the parking lot and hits the handlebar, and doesn't realize he cracked this POS alumimum spindle and kills himself and his wife.
@Brian Wood There have been TWO. That I know of personally. Here is the first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TRzde_Ery5o.html That bike is still broken and disabled and has been sitting at the Honda Dealer for a month and half!!! You should be THANKFUL that people take the time to share problems like this, and alert owners to potential extreme danger. If don't like the content of this channel, you don't have to watch it.
I would get one in a second if the darn shipping to Canada was not more than the price of the part. Maybe you need dealers up here to get the Canadian sales.
The possibility exists for all models, they all use the same aluminum spindle. The 2018s may have been damaged when assembled at the factory due to overtorque of the crown nut. I have videos on my channel about this you can check out.
I am close to buying the bagger dct 2020 at the end of this year and would like to know what Honda has to say about this and why this pin is not built in as standard. Does anyone know.?
Thanks for answering and please tell me how and were I can order it as I live in germany. What I will do howerver is ask Honda germany to make a statement about this informing them that this my well be something the german MOT might want to look into@@Traxxion
@@terrasiho5606 You can email me and I will help get one sent to you in Germany. max@traxxion.com Our company is small, and our website is not good at calculating international freight. Within a week, we will have many of our items for sale on eBay, and it has a good international freight service.
@@Traxxion Thanks I will do that when the time has come and thanks fore what could well be life saving and something Honda considering the price and their reputation should look into
Really... it's too bad really it's a nice nice design... But with upgraded modified upgrades it can be safe... The problem is that the steering isn't really directly connected to the front wheel. I really don't know how men in America convince their wife's to ride on the back of these things...
I guess they don't build Goldwings like they use to. I would take this and paint it yellow gold like my current one... My 2002 sounds just like that, it only has a very little over 40,000 miles... I bought it at $7500.00 The guy I bought from didn't know that it had a huge amount of dog food in the Air box. I guess it used up to much fuel....
