I learned to strike from a book . I had a few sparing sessions was getting battered . Didn't really understand what anyone was trying to tell me . Went to the library and found a book on boxing technique . It had really over exaggerated diagrams of the lead heal lifting as you step into the jab and the rear heal lifting for the cross and the knee turning in . It had birds eye view drawings of footwork . I practiced in the mirror went back and spared on the lvl of people who had done it for a couple years . If you can visualize yourself doing it in your head you are over halfway to doing it in real life . I honestly find it easier to learn something in my own mind from raw data than having someone try actively teach me . To progress further I just watched all Lenox Lewis fights and copied him exactly .
They wouldn’t know how to react to getting hit in the face and how to move their feet, along with other micro-adjustments that aren’t in the video game.
Gran Turismo helped me get a license on my first attempt. Flight sims taught me the basics of flying. If he says the UFC game can get me started, I just have to look into that.
I still look for the apex in turns and I learned that from Gran Turismo 22 years ago. It came with a book that had pictures and text regarding race terminology

I was one of the smart kids sand class, and we all love when kids asked us for help. That was the main times we felt confident at school in social situations. It’s good to make people feel like they have a place and a purpose. I wasn’t popular or anything, I am a big guy so I didn’t get picked on, but when one of the other kids asked me for help it made me feel special.
I remember years ago i was driving in the winter, approaching an intersection on a slightly curved road. When I pressed on the break I started sliding sideways on some ice hidden under the snow. Adrenaline instantly surged but there was no panic, just focus. As I slid towards a potential crash, I did a complex series of light gas taps and break taps, while doing some counter steering but making sure not to over correct and lose control in a fish tail. Regained control and avoided a crash by a few inches. It was like a dozen thoughts happened in 5 seconds. Immediately after, I kept analyzing it over and over again in shock at how the fuck I knew those driving moves. Then I realized... years of playing Gran Turismo A-spec as a kid was burrowed in my subconscious lol. Getting your rally license in that game is hard but getting your Super license is an insane challenge and I remember dedicating so many hours to acquiring it lol. If a game has realistic physics, it absolutely can help build real world skill.
Metal gear also helped me alot with fighting... By teaching me how to become one with the enviornment at such a high level, that I never had to fight at all. People call me a pussy but it's not my fault I became so good at using camouflage at 100% and nobody could ever see me in a fighting situation. True story.
This actually makes perfect sense if you think about it. Especially if ur playing against fighters with high stats on legendary mode. It teaches u distance and timing and also to start small and work up to throwing bigger strikes later on once you figure out your opponent
Max Holloway has a new fan. Not that he needs it. I was real impressed after his recent loss watching him and his son eat ice cream or whatever together during the post fight like everything’s cool, life’s good. Super impressive. Showin his kid there’s bigger things in life.
Randy Rodriguez more likely around 20 k maybe more excluding sponsorship, theres an old clip of the MMA axis show thebone bas rutten did where a UFC fighter came on and explained the payoff a fighter would get depending on how many fights, I think you had to have 20+ fights in UFC to be earning near 100k a fight
I learned a lot watching Ali, Tyson, Rocky franchise, 80s and 90s action movies, and Bruce Lee by watching them on VHS tapes... It works even by playing video games.
Holloway seems like such a chill guy and a class act. He seems devoid of a lot of the over-the-top ego and narssascissm many fighters have. I love that story about playing the UFC game too, talk about skill and athleticism to be able to translate a video game into real life moves. What a great dude.
When I was 15 I would watch amateur boxing matches and pick a guy shadow box do every move he made win or lose super work out ...my first fight lasted maybe 8 seconds

Wow. Back in the day nearly 20 years ago, I played Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. It was the first driving game I played where I could sit inside the car and have a first person view of the steering wheel, stick shift, rear-view mirror and all that. And to me, it gave me that (almost) realistic feeling of being behind the wheel. I always say that that game is the reason I learned to drive and people would laugh, not knowing whether to believe me or not. But really, the first time I sat behind the wheel of a real car to actually drive, it just felt natural. I love this story from Max Holloway. That is amazing. Video games are awesome.
I posted this several times in several years now. Many people from Hawaii knew Max never had a striking coach until after the McTapper fight. His teammate Dustin Kimura was also in the UFC would take turns holding mitts for each other. Hard to believe but true after 7 fights his coach Ryan finally brought in Ivan Flores to help him in Kickboxing and to fight McTapper with no striking coach also hard to believe. Max is just a natural on the stand up.
Not only a Great boxer, but also an respectable human being, he is the man to follow and watch in UFC fights. I hope he gets more success in the future games.
When I was in my teens and practiced karate, I would try to do some techniques that mishima family in tekken did, obviously not the over the top superman stuff, but it was great fun and a lot of it blended very well because theyre all based on different styles of karate
