Max MSP Beginner Tutorial 1

I made this video as a starting point for people who have never used Max/MSP before. I make a very simple patch and do my best to explain how it works.
Objects I use:
number - the basic number box. only does integers.
button - takes any input and outputs a bang (also turns yellow) you can click on it to do the same thing
flonum - similar to number but it can work with decimals
blank object box - allows you to type in the object that you want
cycle~ - this object is a sine wav generator. it creates a sine wave at whatever frequency you tell it to. it is a MSP object and its output is audio.
*~ - multiply audio object. This takes the signal from the cycle~ object (which is -1 to 1) and multiplies it by .25 which changes the range of the audio signal to -0.25 to 0.25 amplitude.

yes again my lecturer seemed to just jump in at a level where i had no idea what was going on, seems to be the thing with lecturers they can no longer remember what its like to be a beginner and confused by new concepts and what not, seems like this will be the way to learn, younger people still have that connection and therefor can explain things well, thanks for the video good work

Excellent tutorial! I repeated this twice and adjusted the numbers and decibels. In result I got a kind of wobble sound by mixing them together. Fascinating piece of software! I'm looking forward to learn more about it :)

Your videos are awesome. I'd like to see your screen just a touch more magnified (beginners get confused between the input and output spots on objects). But your vibe is great, and the level for beginners is spot on.

This is amazing I am so glad that I found your videos! Max MSP just confuses me so much and I think it's down to my teacher not having explained any of the basic details like the audio chords etc. This is so helpful. I don't know if you're still doing videos on Max MSP but have you done one about additive/subtractive synthesis? That would be so amazing! Thanks again the vids are super!

oh a basic drum maschine would be great as well... but I guess this requires some sort of sequencer involved as well???? Or some drones maybe recorded on a real piano or maybe generated through midi and then connected with some sampler for beter sound (does it do VST like Halion?)
@SirMixAlotChannel
@SirMixAlotChannel 13 лет назад
Great stuff man! I'm trying to create a patcher for a midi brain. something that sees the brain/microcontroller hooked up via usb and then allows me to assign midi commands to microcontroller inputs and outputs. Then I'd like to be able to store that information on the chip/brain. I believe the patcher "multicontrol" does this but you can't really change midi functions assigned to the microcontroller. Ideally I'd like to pay someone to do it but if I have to learn it, where would I start?

Hi, I found this a bit helpful..... But I find that most Max tutorials are about more or less digital space sounds. I would be interested in seeing something more helpful for instrumentalists interested in real performances. Being a vocalist for instance, would love to see a loop station created, with added FX (flanger / reverb / delay/ octaver/ phaser and so on) panning, eq, and all those things pretty much essential for normal "acoustic" performances. Would love to make diffrent voice chanel

Hey man. thank you for this video. I'm just starting out with MaxMSP and it's really cool to have you explaining the very basics. Well, I have a very basic problem. I don't get any sound out of my speakers but I'f set them up in a way that I believe to be correct. is it even possible to just use it with my internal sound driver or do have to hook it up to my RME first? thanks in advance.

yeah the dog is weirding people out.... Nice video... I was wondering... How can you control the pitch with an external controller (say a wiii stick or something) so that when you perform, you re not standing in front of a computer. Also how can you control volume with another sort of sensor/controller? This can have interesting applications....

Any possibility for creating something which can simulate binaural? i.e. phase differences and frequency colouring applied to a sound to cause the brain to think it is coming from different locations, nearer and farther and around you, while listening on headphones?

Hey, a little question. I want to use URN to randomize segments of a piece of music (I have different seed objects pointing to different sections of the music) and would like to randomly play them whenever a buttom is pushed. I don't know how to do this guess I need URN, but I can use URN to create random numbers, but how do I do this to create random events?
