it won't, the alcohol may spread the rosin out more on the hands if they don't actually wash it off and just let it dissolve the rosin and then evaporate. but if they wash the rosin off leaving only alcohol on the hands then they won't be more sticky. this outrage for being held to the rules followed by admissions of guilt for cheating after a season or two passes are really getting old in baseball. don't know how jomboy isn't tired of it yet

Trevor Bauer demonstrated years ago on live tv in a pre game interview how sticky the combination of rosin and sweat can be. Dude had a ball literally stuck to the palm of his hand yet here we are, years later, still going through this foolishness and acting like it can't possibly be that sticky.
@JCass954

In a memo sent out to MLB teams and umpires in 2022, the league said that, in light of the crackdown on sticky substances, pitchers are allowed to use the rosin bag on their hands, wrists and forearms. However, they are “prohibited from applying it to their gloves and uniforms, nor are they allowed to combine rosin with any other substance, such as sunscreen.”

If they do not want pitxhers having rosin go ahead and ban it. Then when these sweaty ass palm pitchers start throwing upper 90's at peoples head maybe they will go back on thenstance they are taking. Now we know Scherzer will dial it to 11 but rosin is not an illegal substance and I do not think there is a rule on it. He could litterly just break a sweat going to the mound rosin up and do the same thing. This is another case of umpires wanting to be to involved in how games are played.

The pitch clock makes it very difficult (if not outright impossible) for a pitcher to apply rosin while on the mound. Also, it's not uncommon for a pitcher to wash his hands with alcohol or some kind of alcohol-based wipes. If they use water, their fingertips might "prune" which would just make matters worse.

Seeing the hand washing procedure would be very interesting and give a lot of context. The alcohol works as a solvent and puts the rosin in suspension, which would explain how it got in between the fingers. With the rosin in solution, it would also be possible to concentrate it in certain areas of the hand as the alcohol evaporates. To clean it off, you would also need to rinse with alcohol so it removes it instead of just moving it around.
@coast2coast00
@coast2coast00 Год назад
Ya, from cleaning pipes of sticky stuff, using alcohol won't clean your hands, just move the sticky stuff all around(I don't know what they use, but you'd need a wash basin full of alcohol to wash properly). It does not have something like soap to bind to it and move it away, it' slike washing muddy hands with just water, the dirty parts get cleaner, but everywhere else gets dirtier.

@nolangriggs8233
@nolangriggs8233 Год назад
The compounds present in rosin have decent solubility in organic alcohols, but very limited solubility in water (sweat). If we assume we are talking about IPA (2-propanol, rubbing alcohol) that he used, but he conceivably could have used Ethanol, both would solubilize some amount of rosin that would in turn redeposit on his skin upon evaporation of the alcohol. The redeposited layer would be much stickier than the original rosin due to much increased surface area and trace alcohol remaining entrained in the wax. If they allow alcohol to be used as a hand cleaner (useful in washing off rosin due to the reasons above), then they absolutely should allow the consequences of its use. No penalty should come Scherzer's way.

Was at a game with the same D-bag walking in front of me every half inning getting food or drinks, two guys next to me having a loud conversation while never looking up from their phones, and it was the worst crowd atmosphere of the 20+ stadiums I've been to. At the same time, constant bitching about the calls. If I lived in LA I'd never take my kids to a game because of the hostility and language. Doesn't help that Chavez Ravine isn't in the safest area of LA either. I'd chalk it up to an isolated incident, but my buddy who is a Cubs fan went to a playoff game in LA since it was closer with us being here in AZ. After the Cubs won the series in LA (en route to them winning the series that year) the security was telling Cubs fans to join the celebration down on the first level. It was so they could clear out any Dodgers fans loitering after the game so they didn't kill anyone. I believe it to given some Dodgers fans attacked a San Fran fan at a game a couple years back and put him in a coma in front of his kid. It's the only game of the hundreds I've been to that I didn't feel that safe walking out to the car afterwards and was very glad I didn't wear another teams hat/jersey.

I was mad that he got to keep pitching that game but after this one, there is clearly an issue that needs to be fixed in the MLB. Like I said, me being a twins fan I certainly have my biases and think this has a lot to do with some Yankees bias in the mlb, but this could also be, and admittedly more likely, the fact that the umps have too much power right now and “stickiness” is very subjective. Who’s to say another umpire would’ve been fine with it after he complies with EVERYTHING you told him to do. I just hate how these two incidents happened so close to each other and there were many arguments why Germàn should’ve also been tossed

Seems like if MLB wants pitchers to use only the rosin on the mound to ensure this not becoming an ongoing issue, they need allow a 5-10 second stoppage every few throws or batters for the pitcher to use the rosin in plain sight. Colophony (commonly known as „rosin“) is made from resin of certain trees which is basically the stuff that is used in Handball to make the ball sticker. Most of the times it’s just literally just natural resin but some brands have different chemical compositions and one that is used is literally rosin dissolved in *ALCOHOL* . If he was told to wash it off with alcohol and used that instead of soap and water, it would feel clean until the alcohol dried off. He probably took a big pump of hand sanitizer in front of the official, and then rubbed his hands vigorously to show it dripping off. Without soap though it just spreads the rosin all over your hands, and feels slick until it starts to dry, then it's like you used spray glue on yourself. It's basically the same thing as a dry erase marker, all the pigment (rosin) is suspended in a solvent (alcohol) and gets left behind when it dries. So each time he though he was washing his hands and reapplying rosin, he was just spreading out what was already there and then adding more, so it's no wonder it got stickier each time.

To be fair to the umps, we don't get a lip read of what they are specifically saying to Max what they want, so there is a lot of supposition going on in Max's defense. IMO, I think that many folks are missing the fact that when the ump says "go in there and wash your hands", they are probably not really interested in the process or materials used, but the output. i.e. what they actually mean is "Your hands are too sticky. Go back into the dugout, do whatever it is you have to do to make sure your hands are clean and non-sticky when you come back out here." All this talk about "I used alcohol" this, and "chemical reaction makes it more sticky" that misses the point that the umps wanted him to come back out to the mound with clean, non-sticky hands and he didn't do that, 2 or 3 times in a row. Also, did the umps "make" him use the alcohol? Or did Max choose to use it (and not, oh, I don't know, soap and water, the typical substance one thinks of when one is told to wash their hands) because he knew the effect it would have on the rosin?
