It's funny how they executed a King, only to get an Emperor a decade later.

French emperor is still a republic, with two chamber of elected member and counter power? the Emporor is "only" the strong head of state france needed to gain stability in order to preserve the gai, from the revolution at a time where whole europe declared war

@@Unbiasedagent You missed the point. they wanted to abolish the monarchy only to get another one later. And I'm quite sure Napoleon held absolute power in the scale of how he ruled.

I feel like Danton's look to Robespierre is " I've had more corruption accusations than everyone in this convention this is not the first time"

Ironic that Robespierre saves dantons head only for him to have him executed later on himself and then get executed by the national assembly a few months after that. It's true what they say the revolution swallows it's children lol

Their grip on power of the early revolutionaries was unstable and based primarily on propaganda and voicing the problems but not offering real solutions. It took military men to start winning victories, extorting from the vanquished states, using the money to pay their troops, thereby gaining their personal loyalty and using them to control the country with an iron grip and clamp down on random Paris district forming a militia to influence the government now and then to restore something resembling order.

Robespierre had a tough time in making the decision to guillotine Danton and Desmoulins. I think he knew the fact that if he did so, he would also make all revolutionaries including himself, vulnerable for the guillotine. That is why in his speech he said, even if my some divine providence that if it need be, that he shall lose his life, he will stick by this plan of removing all that is "corrupt". Again this "corrupt", this lack of virtue is very much undefined and up to the committee to decide on who deserves life or death. Therein is the judgment for all of these revolutionaries to be in the end, guillotined. The judges themselves, condemned to the gallows!

Check the history of the communism. They were always a little bit more, than boss positions in the government. This is why they killed each other.

@@PeterMaXXHorvath, you may be right but, at least I believe so, comparing French Revolution with any generic Communist Revolution is to simplify things too much. It's impossible to think about Robespierre merely eliminating his "enemies" without also supecting him going crazy since most of those political "enemies" were actually friends who wanted neither his dictatorship nor his death. There is something more we could ignore, and it could be something about Robespierre's mental health.

What appears clear to me, in the movie, Robespierre, at some point in the evolution of his politicial life has become more "loyal" to his so-called "virtues". Depsite Danton and Desmoulins being longtime friends to Robespierre, they appeared to him not worthy of his ideology. The former lacked manners and is accused of corruption, the lattter was too soft while the situation required hardliners. So they both became unworthy to him and his perception of the meaning of the Revolution. Robespierre perceived himself as pure and above all, virteous person. Also, it didin't help that, St-Just, a hot young fella, but also an extremist, pushed Robespierre in that direction. That is my take from the movie.
