In previous videos we talked about the Block Foot and what its role in jumping is. Understanding its purpose is one thing, but knowing how the application of it can influence the outcome of the jump is another. In this video we take a look at 3 variations of block foot application for the 2-foot jump.
1) Parallel to the Plant
2) Slight Medial (toward midline) rotation
3) Excessive Medial rotation
I would recommend that new jumpers DO NOT play around with excessive rotation of the block foot out of the gate. It's important that the upstream joint structures have sufficient stability and integrity.

The problem is that I’m naturally hip dominant and I bend at the hip when I do a running jump and it’s messing me up cutting my power is 2 at best I can grab 9’8 at 5’6 which sucks because I have more potential. And the block foot is messing me up to Im trying to learn to turn my hips at an angle with the foot to. 🎉 :well I’m back to update : I had a friend explain me they’d steps in person since he knew about this and he could already grab rim. I finally was able to put my whole hand on a 10 feet backboard before I wasn’t able to know I can!. Technique makes a difference!

@Project Pure Athlete - This video is different than your others in that most of the time you recommend the out-toed version of the block step. Here you've given us 3 different versions and the context for each. So, I'm wondering if there is a problem with teaching all 3 variations to all jump-oriented athletes (volleyball/basketball/etc) with dedicated drills for each 3 variations?
@jumpguyty
@jumpguyty 3 года назад
Applying a linear block isn't as efficient as a block although it will do the job in certain situations. It's all very dependent upon the situation at hand, angle of approach and specific tendencies of the athlete.
@PrecisionSportScience
@PrecisionSportScience 3 года назад
@@jumpguyty Got it. So perhaps we only teach the "ideal" block step version and just tell the athletes that you wont always use this and that's ok. We're just teaching you the "ideal" one because it's the most efficient and if you get to choose during the moment you're more likely to default to this then. Is that fair?

I keep trying to implement the block step in my approach but it only seems to hurt my vertical! (I have a natural 37 inches running vert) I know I really need to use it but why do I jump higher with my feet straight? Can someone help me?
@jumpguyty
@jumpguyty 2 года назад
Well, if you're jumping, you're using a block foot. The question is, are you using it efficiently or not. If you search my Impulse Block drill, it's a great way to start feeling it better!

@@jumpguyty I bought your 12-week program « the missing link »! What would be the minimal amount of gain in my vert after these 12 weeks? 1-2? Would be nice if it helps cause I’m planning on getting up to 45 inches! Naturally 37 and now I’m at 40 (with a bad technique like I have no speed and my block foot is not on an angle)
@jumpguyty

@@davidtremblay9362 There's no way to guarantee a specific amount of inches, but if you follow closely and supplement it with your other training, you will see noticeable improvement in your jumping!

Right handed here. I have jumpers knee in my right knee, I think it comes from the approach step. Is there a way to have left be my approach step but still hit with right hand (Or another technique to reduce the load on the right knee when jumping) ? My trainer said I should do the from step to jump faster. Could that be an issue where I put too much force on my approach leg cus I hold that position too long?

I was similar to this, I was left right despite being right handed. I recently changed to right left and while my vert has gone down, it's definitely better in the long run. Right now i'm probably 2 inches less than my left right, you just gotta keep practising.

@@jumpguyty what factors involved make some people naturally jump so high even with shit technique 🧐. I've gotten stronger over these months (can squat 2x my bw) along with explosive plyos and jumping atleast 2x per week and my technique is pretty decent yet i only have a 33 in vertical (which in itself is decent but I'm short af at 5'3)

@@user-jn9tm2oo5i people that jump high with shit technique are what we call "outliers". These are individuals that have a genetic predisposition to be explosive. As such, we don't emulate outliers, because it isn't a quality that can be taught. Make sense?

I thought volleyball middles want their hips at an angle from the net. Hitting is a largely rotational motion, and you want your body to rotate towards the opposing court, not away from it.
@roguiscell4795
@roguiscell4795 5 лет назад
that is when your torso comes in, once you are in the air, what dicates the rotation is your torso and a bit of your core, that is why outside hitter face their entire torso to the setter, middles face their torso partially away from the net in the setter direction, and opposites face their torso directly to the net
@princekamoro3869
@princekamoro3869 5 лет назад
@@roguiscell4795 The torso needs room to rotate right to left (assuming right-handedness), because that is crucial for generating power safely and efficiently. And it can only rotate so far to the right before you run out of range-of-motion. So hitters plant their FEET at the angles you mentioned, so that the torso has room to open up, close, and still be in position to hit to the right.
