Any long-time viewers of this channel will know how much I like Maxwell. I mean, there is just something about this man that is impossible not to like. His apathetic attitude towards virtually everything. His apparent disdain for all things festive. His preference towards letting shadowy versions of himself perform all manner of tasks, saving both the integrity of his spine, and his sanity. Of course, all of these things pale in comparison to his position as the ex-overlord of Don’t Starve’s fictional time prison wherein the game takes place, as well the ex-villain of the first entry in the game’s franchise.
So, needless to say, there are a lot of eyes on Maxiferus Wellium and where he has ended up post-
rework. Not only in terms of his gameplay, but also the highly anticipated character short.
First thing’s first, the Codex Umbra - Maxwell’s beloved book who’s name makes him sound like a 13 year old who just discovered Latin, has been reworked. No longer is it a crafting station - instead, reading it will open a ‘spell wheel’ with all of Maxwell’s new abilities ready and waiting. Each spell will drain a small amount of durability, which can predictably be refreshed by feeding the book a healthy serving of nightmare fuel. This makes the book feel much more like a book, because- you actually read it now. Having it function like a portable crafting station definitely felt quite a bit janky, so in all honesty, I’m glad to see that gone. The first two of Maxwell’s spells are the Shadow Duelist and Servant - the latter being a homogenisation of the Shadow Miners, Loggers, and Diggers from the ‘codex crafta’ of old. Instead of forming a shadowy troupe and marching around the world alongside Maxwell, his minions will now be restricted to an area where they were summoned, but will perform their respective tasks inside - that being all manner of manual labour, including the ability to bring harvested items to the player. This ‘set and forget’ method is an interesting tradeoff. The puppets require much less cognitive effort to summon and micromanage, as well as far less cost when it comes to nightmare fuel, but now have quite a limited range. The biggest loss, though, is the feeling of strutting around with your own personal army composed entirely of yourself, which is now a relic of the past. Overall, however, I think this new way of the puppets functioning is an improvement. They’re much easier to manage, and waste far less time, nightmare fuel, and real-life sanity.
Aside from now being shadowy slashers who can duck and weave from the darkness, Duelists’ lower cost makes them an actually reliable ally in combat. Particularly versus bosses who don’t possess many AoE attacks, large numbers of duelists can make short work of anything large standing in your path - as well as everyday encounters against foes like hounds or pigmen, if you have the fuel to spare.
Additionally, wearing ‘shadow magic’ themed items will increase your shadows’ damage output. This effect can stack, and can be bolstered from all three of your equip slots. Any shadow item will give a small buff, but ‘offensive’ items in this category will give a greater bonus. The biggest boost comes from Fuelweaver drops - the bone helm and bone armour giving the second-highest, and the Shadow Thurible bestows the highest buff of all. This gives Maxwell players quite a lot of incentive to fight Fuelweaver.
Unlike some other characters, namely Winona, Maxwell doesn’t have any abilities that will singlehandedly trivialise the almighty Weaver. Some of his new abilities do make the fight easier, but you’re still handicapped by Maxwell’s extremely low maximum health, his main drawback which thankfully remains in the game post-update.
