Look at the map; MW made the right call. Deadwood, SD is a small town (pop.1300) in the middle of a national park (federal land) with a reputation that goes back to the Old West. It's right next to another town that hosts the biggest bike rally in the country, if not the world, Sturgis. Middle of nowhere, few roads...and the locals have seen it all. Unless you want to sleep with buffalo for a couple of days or so, you're not getting away.

By law, they should have been arrested for going 20 above the speed limit. 20+ is an instant trip to jail. If he said he knew they were going that fast, but didn't arrest them, he would be fired.
